Application July 19, 1947, Serial No. 762,126
7 Claims.
1 This invention relates to a garment and is directed to a garment having a portion extending downwardly from the waist together with leg portions. The portion extending downwardly from the waist may extend above the waist. The leg portions may be of any desired length.
The human body is so constructed that the legs are attached to or merge into the trunk so that there is a distinct dividing line between the legs and trunk particularly at the front of the body. This dividing line is substantially the line of the groin and in the relative movements of the legs and trunk the leg really swings about this line. The dividing line between the legs and trunk runs through the crotch close to the leg so that there is a narrow portion flat in a lateral direction which extends between the legs and could properly be called part of the trunk. The said dividing line could also be said to pass across the body substantially in the crease of the buttock. When a person stands erect there is a decided fold at the bottom of the buttocks. This is taken up when the person bends forwardly and this fold thus accommodates forward bending movement. All relative movements of the legs and trunk really take place about the above described line.
It is an object of this invention to provide a garment having a portion surrounding the body at and below the waist, which portion extends to the above mentioned line together with leg portions which are connected at their upper ends to said first mentioned portion, a fullness being provided in the garment adjacent the lower part of the buttocks which is taken up when the body bends forwardly. v
It is a further object of the invention to provide a garment having a portion extending from side to side at and below the waist, said portion having a narrowed part extending through the crotch together with leg portions secured at their upper ends to said portion along lines each of which extends from a point at one side of the garment downwardly and inwardly approximately along the groin line through the crotch close to the leg laterally approximately along the fold or crease of the buttock and upwardly to said side at a point some distance below said first mentioned point.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a garment having a portion extending about the waist and downwardly therefrom closely fitting the trunk together with leg portions secured at their upper ends to said first mentioned portion along lines extending along the dividing lines between the trunk and legs about which lines the relative movement between the legs and trunk takes place, said garment having a fullness adjacent the fold in the buttocks.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing principally the front of the garment;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing principally the rear of the garment;
Fig. 3 is a view in front elevation showing the legs of the garment distended so as to show the portion of the trunk extending through the crotch;
Fig. 4 is a plan view showing one piece of which the garment may be made;
Figs. 5 and 6 are views respectively of pieces from which the leg portions can be made;
Fig. '7 is a perspective view of a person wearing said garment; and
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a person in a different position wearing said garment.
Referring to the drawings, particularly Figs. 1 to 3, a garment is shown comprising a portion I'll which extends about the body adjacent the waist portion and downwardly from the waist. Said garment may have a band Illa at its top provided with elastic. While portion Ill may be in one piece or divided as desired, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated it is shown as having front and rear portions connected at the sides of the garment along lines [0b. The portion [0 extends downwardly at front and rear and has a narrowed part I00 which extends through the crotch of the body. Leg portions l I are provided which may be of any desired length. These leg portions are connected at their upper ends to portion H) by suitable seams along the lines H a. Each line Ha extends from a point H1) at the side of the garment preferably on line lllb downwardly and inwardly approximately along the groin line of the body. Lines l l a at the front extend downwardly and inwardly at an angle of substantially 45 degrees, as shown in Fig. 1. Line II a extends through the crotch close to the leg of the wearer, this portion being indicated as Had. Like Ila then extends transversely and outwardly at the rear of the garment approximately along the crease formed by the fold of the buttock. This portion is indicated as Hab. Portion I I ab then curves upwardly to the side of the garment preferably on line lllb to a point I I 0 some distance below the point Mb. The leg portions H are shown as provided with narrow bands or hems i Id at their bottoms.
While the garment could be made of pieces divided as desired, in practice the same has been efliciently made of three pieces. One of these pieces Hip forms the portion is of the garment. It will be seen that it has the narrowed portion lflc. This portion Hie will be disposed at the crotch and the edges lt'pa will be secured to the edges lflpb along the lines lob shown in Figs. 1 to 3. The leg portions Hp are similar and these will extend about the leg, the side edges llpa being connected to the edges Hpb. The edges I lpc will be connected to the edge portions "3pc, shown in Fig. 4, which extend between the side edges [Ups and lflpb.
From the above description it will be seen that a garment has been produced on a theory which is 100 per cent sound. To have the dividing lines of the garment follow approximately the dividing lines between the trunk and legs is most logical. It will be seen that the lines Ha follow a sort of an upwardly extending spiral from point I I to point Hb. There is, as above stated, a fold in the body at the buttocks when the body stands so that there should naturally be a fold or fullness in the garment at this point when the wearer is in erect position. This fullness is provided adjacent the fold of the buttocks and is clearly shown as its in 2. When the wear er stoops or bends this fullness is taken up just as the fold in the buttock is taken up and the said fullness in the garment thus accommodates the forward bending movement or the stooping or kneeling movement of the wearer. This is illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8. The portion H! of the garment fits the trunk smoothly just as does the skin of the body. The leg portions of the garment keep their places at all times, the same being held up and around the garment by the front part of the portion in of the garment. When the body pivots back and forth and the leg bones move in their sockets there is very little or no change in the actual through-the-crotch length of the body so there is no need for any special fullness in the crotch portion Hlc forwardly or rearwardly of the body. With the legs diverging, as shown by the garment in Fig. 3, the crotch portion fits the body smoothly. When the legs move together the crotch portion folds somewhat as it does in all garments. It is again pointed out that the fullness 10d adjacent the crease of the buttocks is disposed at the exact place where the body itself lengthens in the forward bending movement.
The garment described is a form-fitting one and is extremely comfortable for it fits just like a second skin. It is therefore a logical garment and is ideal for every human being, man, woman or child. The invention is applicable to most any garment having leg portions and would have particular utility in undergarments, all kinds of sport garments, slacks, trousers, etc. A suitable opening could be made in the front of the garment for men and boys without departing from the principle 0r inventive idea. Also in practice and for the purpose of saving material and economical construction the trunk section If! could be pieced and reinforced if desired at the crotch and the leg sections could be divided along any chosen line as at the inner portion thereof. It is obvious that the garment could be made of any sort of material.
'It will of course be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
