To all whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that I, HUMPHREY FORD, citizen of Canada, residing at Halifax, in the Province of Nova Sootia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coats, of whichthe followmg is a specification.

My invention relates to coats; and it has for its object to provide a coat, designed more especially for the use of motorists, andembodying such a construction that its upper portion may be closed in various ways to suit it to different kinds of Weather, and also to present distinctly difierent dressy appear ances.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with;

the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

Figure 1 is a view showing the coat constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant, as the same appears when arranged to afford the open front military effect. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the same with the collar turned down. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the coat arranged to afford a double-breasted efiect. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and 3, and showing the coat arranged to afford a closed front military effect. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the same arrangement as in Fig. 4:, but with a storm collar, and Fig. 6, is a detail view showing the said arrangement with a turned-down collar.

Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which:

A is the body of my novel coat, which is provided with conventional or any other suitable sleeves B, and is also provided, when deemed expedient, with pockets C and other ordinary, well known adjuncts. At one side, preferably the left hand side of the neck portion of the coat, the body A is provided with two buttons at, and said body is also provided down its front portion with a series of, preferably five, buttons b.

D is a front portion carried by the body A at the right hand side of the front opening of the coat. The said frontportion D may be formed by a box plait or by a separate piece attached to the body A, and it is provided with button-holes c complementary to the before mentioned buttons 6, and is also pro- H. STAN- 'vided with a vertical series of buttons d. It will also be seen by reference to Fig. 4 that the front portion D is provided at its upper end and in front of the right hand shoulder portion of the garment with two buttons 6.

E is the collar of the coat which is joined at its ends to the body A and the portion D, respectively. The said collar E comprises the ordinary loop f to straddle the neck of the wearer, upper tabs 9 having button-holes h to cooperate with buttons '5 on opposite sides of the-loop f, and lower comparatively large tabs k, separated from the tabs 9 by intervening cuts Z and having button-holes m.

In the practical use of the coat constructed in accordance with my invention, it will be understood that when it is desired to arrange the coat so as to obtain the open front military effect shown in Fig. 1, it is simply neces sary to turn the loop f of the collar up, and

'turn the tabs 9 back and button the same to the outer sides of the loop f also, that it is necessary to fold the portion D back upon itself, and to place its button-holes c in on gagement with its buttons (1, and the buttonholes m on its collar tab is in engagement with its buttons e. Then it is further necessary to fold the front portion of the body A back upon itself and to put its button-holes p and its buttonholes 1" into engagement with its buttons 1) and a, res ectively.

When it is desire to have the open front military effect and-a turned-down collar of plain appearance, the loop f and the tabs 9 of the collar are turned down after the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. 7

To arrange the novel coat so as to obtain a double-breasted eflect, Fig. 3, the loop f and both pairs of tabs g and 7c are turned downwardly, and the front portion D is lapped over the left-hand front portion of the body A, and the button-holes c in said front portion D are placed in engagement with the buttons 11 on the left-hand front portion of the body A. It will also be understood by reference to Fig. 4 that when it is desired to have'the coat present a closed front military effect, it is simply necessary to arrange the collar in the same manner as in Fig. 1, and to lap the front portion D over the left hand front portion of the body A, and put the button-holes c of said portion D and the button-holes m of its tab lc in engagement with the buttons 12 and a, respectively, of the body A. Again when it is desired to obtain the closed front military effect with a storm collar, one of the collar tabs g} is lapped within the other and is bnt'tonedto such'other, "as

shown in Fig. 5, while to obtain the closed front military effect with a turned-down collar, the collar loop f and the collar tabs g are turned downwardly so that the said tabs 9 rest in pendent positions in front of the front portion D, all as clearly shown in Fig. 6.

In addition to the facility With which my novel coat may be changed to suit it to different kinds of weather and to prevent the various styles hereinbefore described, it will be noted that the coat is susceptible of being made up quite as easily as an ordinary coat,

and requires but little if any, more material than an ordinary coat.

As before stated, the construction herein illustrated and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised, but it is obvious that in the future practice 7 of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as do not depart from the scope of my invention as defined'in the claims appended. v

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Pat'- ent, is:

1. An open front coat, comprising a body having fastening devices in front of one of its shoulder portionsand fastening devices extending in series at one side of its front opening, and also having fastening means adjacent itsfree edge, a front portion carried by the portion of the body at the opposite side of the front opening and having fastening devices on its shoulder portion and a vertical series of fastening devices remote from its free edge andalso having fastening 'means adjacent its free edge, adapted to cooperate with the fastenlng' devices on the body, at one side of the front opening, and

also with the said fastening devices on the front portion, and a collar joined at its ends 'to the body and the said front portion, re

prising a loop adapted to straddle the neck and be folded downwardly upon itself and having fastening devices on the outer side of its upper portion, lower tabs forming continuations of the loop, and upper tabs also forming continuations of the loop and separated by intervening cuts from the lower tabs; the said upper tabs being provided adjacent their free ends with means for cooperating with the fastening means on the outer side of the upper portion of the collar, whereby when the collar is used as a standing collar, the upper tabs may be folded back in opposite directions and fastened to the outer side of the upper portion of the loop, or one upper tab may be lapped over the other and fastened to the outer side of the upper portion of the loop.
