Description

GERALD R. LIVER-GOGD,
UNITED STATES 'PATENT OEEIOE.
E ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI,
SOMMER, OE ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI UMBRELLA-WINDOW.
Specification Vof Letters Patent.
Patented .Iuiy 2 0, 1909.
Application tiled December 14, 1908. Serial No. 467,484.
To' ally/720m lit may concern: l
Bfeitknown that I, GERALD R. LIviiRGooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at StLfJoseph, in 'the county of Buchanan and State ,of Missouri, have .invented certain new and useful' Improvements in U1iibiella-\Vi1i dows,A of which the following is a specification, reference'being had therein to the accoinpa-i'iying drawing. My' invention relates to improvements in umbrella windows, the objects of which are, to provide a transparent pane of any desired shape, andsecuring means for securing said' pane to .the'corer lof any ordinary parasol or lumbrella, through which the -user thereof niay see, and thereby avoid collision with ob- 'jects or othei persons or takeobservation of other persons', witlput thereby attracting attention to said user.
Further objects, are to so construct an uinbrella` window, that it may readily be :ap-
plied to "either thefa-bric used in the manuwhich Figure 1, is a perspective view of an uinbrella,rshow`i 0f two windows of different shapes therein, i enlarged vertical section, oii"tli'e-liiieri\ 1X,
Seen in.- Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a Section, similar to Fig. 2, showing a. different arrangement of parts.
l rReferring to Fig. Q my invention coin- *prises the flat transparei'it pane E, formed preferablv of celluloid, butthe saine inay be f either absolutely transparent, or be stained anydcsired color; the upper part et, having the downwardly projecting concentric ring if, forfnied therewith, and the lower. part 5, provided with the upwardly projecting concentric ring 5 formed therewith; said parts and their rings being preferably formed of pliable or semi-elastic material, .Suchas leatheii, vnlcanizedrubber andthe like. The
inner peripheryY of ring 5 and the outer peg- .riplier v of ring el are made of such diani'eters` as will forni a Snug'iit, wheti tele- .'Scoped together. with the portion 1 of cover .1 4 of an umbrella between said peripheries.
d f for use. Fig. 2 is an 1n" the application of iny invention to cover 1, any good cement (not showin) coinposed of such ingredients as 'will 'withstand the action Of water, and will not become f'iiable when thoroughly set, is applied to ASSIGNOR .or ONE-HALF Tojvicron c.
the' outer Surface of ring t, to the inner surface of ring to both surfaces of portion 1 of the cover 1,' and to the contacting edge portion. of .pane 3. Pane 3 is placed on part in ring 5 and said part andpane are placed in the desired position, under coverl. The location of saine is niade visible on the upper Surface of cover 1, by pressure of the operai ors hand, or other flexible object thereon, thereby creasing said cover ,over ring 5' on Said crease, on Said cover, after which ring l is telescoped into' ring', by pres- V sure applied on part L1, thereby pushing portion 1" of cover-1 to the posit-imi seen in Fig. Q after which opening 2 is ctit in cover 1,- by the use of. any ordinary edge tool, not
shown.
Parts #1 and 5 vand their concentric rings 4 and 5, and the pane 3 and opening 2 may be either annular, as Seen at 2,.in Fig. 1 or .they n iay vbe square, triangular, or oval `as indicated at 2- in the same figure, o r any other shape, suitable to forni a Window incover 1, and are of Such dimensions and thickness, as will readily fold in -Withthe folds of. cover 1, of an ordinary parasolv or umbrella, when the saine is folded.
lt will be Seen and understood thatthe angles or bends 1, in cover 1, as Seen in Fig. 3, prevent the portion l of said cover, from Part 1 is guided to proper position, 'f
being withdrawn from between -rings 4t and i 5, by the tension of Said cover, when the umbrella is openedjo the position, seen in Fig. 1, vand that the described parts will be neat in appearance, and provide ready means for enabling' the user thereof, to see objects and persons -therethrough.
While I have described and shown the ap- .'plicationof my invention to cover 1, as seen in Fig. 2, it is evident that the pane 3 could be placed on cover 1, as seen in Fig. 3, Witliy out departing from the spirit of niy inv/ention, which Ireserve the .right to do.
L Having fully. described my invention, /What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis: v
1. In an umbrella window, the combination with the cover of'an umbrella, .parasol and the like, having an opening therethrough, of
iio
on said lower part and in said ring thereof;
. said cover and the edge portion of said a e, being adapted' to ha've cement applied t ereoii. for securing said pane,
suitable si'ze and shape, to form a'jwindow therein; of a pliable' lower part, beneath Said I cover', and' in register with said opening said lower 'part being provided withan upwardly projecting concentric ring, formed integral therewith; a fiat, pliable transparent pane a pliable upper part on said cover, said upperfpart being provided with adownwardly projecting ring being telescoped into said upwardly, pro jecting ring, with that portion-ot1 said cover which surrounds the edge of said opening, held between the {oi'iter surface of said downwardly projecting ring, and the inner surace of said upwardly projecting ring, said surfaces of said rings7 said held portionofV j said parts and their respective rings to said cover. j
lclosing said opening;
formed therewith', s aid ring 2. In an umbrella window, tion with the cover of an urn an opening therethrough, of suitable and shape to forin a window therein, Hat. nliable stained pane,
