SOLOMON ABRAMSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TROUSERS-KNEE-LIFTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed June 18, 1914. Serial No. 845,819.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Solomon ABRAMSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trousers-Knee-Lifting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a lifting device for each leg of a pair of trousers for the purpose of automatically lifting the lower portions of the legs when the knees are bent, as in sitting down, ascending steps, stooping and the like, whereby the objectionable bagging of the trousers legs at the knees is positively prevented and movement of the legs is unimpeded.
The general objects of the invention are to provide an extremely simple and effectlve lifting device applied inside the legs of a pair of trousers at the knee portions, which serve to automatically exert a lifting action when the knee is bent, as above described, the lifting device or attachment comprising essentially a V-shaped fabric structure which has its vertex placed directly at the knee portion of the trousers leg with the two members of the device extending upwardly therefrom to the lateral portions of the trousers leg where the extremities of the members are secured to the inside and outside seam or adjacent thereto at points between the level of the knee and the level of the crotch, the said members being preferably free from the trousers at points intermediate the knee and the side seams, so that when the knee is bent these oppositely-extending obliquely disposed members produce an upward pull on the trousers leg from the knee portion to the bottom, whereby the bagging at the knees of the trousers legs is prevented without the necess ty of the wearer pulling up the trousers legs,'as is now commonly the case, and also without the free movement of the legs being interfered with.
The lifting attachment is preferably made of some smooth fabric, such as silk, so that the low co-efiicient or friction between it and the knee of the wearers leg will enable the crotch portion of the attachment to slide along the knee when the leg is bent.
For a more complete understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and appended claims aken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a view of the lower portion of a person wearing a pair of trousers equipped with the knee lifter attachments, one of the legs being shown raised to illustrate the action of the trousers knee lifter; Fig. 2 is a side view showing the person in a sitting posture, the trousers being shown broken away and in section to illustrate the position and action of the trousers knee lifter; Fig. 3 is a side view showing the trousers legs before the person takes the sitting posture shown in Fig. 2; Fig a is a view of a pair of trousers turned inside out to show the position of the knee lifters and the manner of attachment thereof to the trousers; Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the lifting devices before being applied to the trousers.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the legs of an ordinary pair of trousers to which are applied the lifting devices 2, which are in the nature of attachments that are applied to the respective legs for the purpose of causing the automatic lifting of the trousers legs at the knees when the wearer bends the legs, as in sitting down, stooping, stepping upwardly or ascending stairs. Each attachment comprises a pair of angularly disposed members 3 and f arranged in the form of a V and preferably integrally connected at the crotch or vertex portion 5. The attachment or lifting device is arranged within the trousers leg, and hence is concealed from view, and the position is such that the members 3 and 4 extend upwardly from the knee portion 6 of each trousers leg to the outer and inner side seams 7 and 8 of the trousers legs, the cxtremities 5' and a being secured adjacent the side scams 7 and S by being suitably stitched, as indicated at 9, Fig. 4-. The crotch or vertex portion of the f-shaped lifting device is stitched at 10 and 11 to the knee portion of the trousers leg, so that the members 3 and i are practically free at all points from the garment.
It will be noted that the points where the upper extremities of the members 3 and 4,- are attached to the garment are located be tween the level of the knee and the level of the crotch 12 of the trousers, said points being nearer the crotch than the knee portions of the trousers legs. t will also be noted that the lifting attachments are carried wholly by the front pieces of the trousers legs, as the members 3 and at do not pass the inner and outer seams 7 and 8.
If desired, each lifting device may be pro- 1 vided with a strip -like extension at 13 which is adapted to be folded at 1 1 so as to extend vertically between the members 3 and i when the device is applied to the trousers, and this strip-like extension 13 is fastened by stitches 15 to each trousers leg in a central position or coincident with the crease 16 extending down the front of the trousers leg.
The lifting attachment is preferably made of some suitable fabric which is comparatively smooth so that it will slide freely on the knee cap.
As shown in Fig. 3, and by the right leg in Fig. 1, the crotch portions of the lifting devices are directly in front of the knee caps, so that when the wearer bends the legs the crotches 5 will slide upwardly on the knee caps, as the members 3 and 4: exert a lifting action on the lower portions of the trousers legs. In actual practice a device constructed as shown produces a lifting action of from four to five inches entirely automatically, so that the wearer does not have to pay any attention to lifting of the trousers legs as is now customary, for the purpose of comfort and for preventing bagging at the knees and the removal of the creases.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A pair of trousers and leg-lifting devices fastened in the legs thereof, each device comprising a pair of members extending upwardly and outwardly in opposite directions from the knee portion of the trousers leg to the inner and outer lateral portions, the upper and lower extremities of the members being secured to the trousers while the intermediate portions of the 1nembers are free.
2. A. pair of trousers having a lifting device in each leg, whereby the portion of a leg from the knee down is automatically lifted when the wearers leg is bent at the knee, the lifting device comprising a pair of members having their lower ends fastened to the knee portion of the trousers leg and extending divergently-upwardly and having their upper ends attached to the trousers leg adjacent the inner and outer seams and at points between the knee and crotch of the trousers.
3. A pair of trousers, a leg lifting device fastened to the front piece of each leg of the trousers and embodying a flexible V-shaped structure fastened at its vertex to the knee portion of a. trousers leg and havingits members extending upwardly, with the extremities of the members fastened to the inner and outer lateral portions of the trousers leg.
1. A pair of trousers, a lifting device arranged in each leg and extending from the knee upwardly, said device being attached to the front piece of the trousers leg and consisting of a pair of upwardly-divergent tape-like members fastened at their lower ends to the knee portion of the trousers leg and extending therefrom to the inner and outer lateral portions of the trousers leg and attached thereto.
5. A trousers leg lifting attachment comprising a pair of tape-like members having their lower ends united in the form of a V and made of flexible material, said members being flat in a common plane.
6. A trousers leg lifting attachment comprislng a pair of members united 1n the form of a V and provided with acentral tape-like extension adapted to be folded to In testimony whereof I have signedmy name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
