Description

HARRY WALCOFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
KNICKERBOGKERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1919.
Application filed January 31, 1918. Serial No. 214,591.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY lVALoorF, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knickerbockers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knickerbockers of the general type in which a baggy or bloomer effect is produced in the legs of the garment when same is worn by a person. This baggy or bloomer effect, which is very desirable in garments of the kind in question, is generally secured by detachably clamping or fastening the lower ends of the garment legs about the legs of the wearer generally at points in close proximity to the knees and then draping the garment material in a manner to produce the desired result. Such garments possess many disadvantages and even under the most favorable conditions interfere with the freedom of movement of the wearer and are uncomfortable to wear, in addition to being harmful by arresting the circulation of the blood, etc. Furthermore, if an attempt is made to overcome these disadvantages by adjusting the clamping or securing means loosely, the ends of the garment legs will drop below the knee, or in other words, will hang down, thus producing an unsightly, slovenly and unsatisfactory appearance.
My invention has for its object to overcome all such disadvantages and objections by producing a garment in which the much desired bloomer or baggy effect is secured without in any way binding the limbs of the wearer or interfering with his freedom of motion and in which the possibility of the ends of the garment legshanging down is entirely done away with. My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
For the purposes of illustration and description, I have shown an example of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an exterior View of a pair of knickerbockers including my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof partly in section.
As shown in the drawings, the knickerbockers comprise the usual body 5 and integral leg members 6, the body in the illustrated example being formed with opposed edges adapted to be detachably secured together in any suitable manner as by means of buttons and button holes 7, whereby the usual front opening of garments of the present type may be opened and closed. The garment may further include any other features or elements which are customarily present in garments of the kind in question.
The leg members 6, as shown in Fig. 1, preferably converge inwardly somewhat toward their lower, free ends, which may be finished in any desired manner, it being understood that said members may be otherwise shaped to meet special conditions. In my improved garment the lower or free ends of the leg members 6 are turned or folded inwardly, either before or after the knickerbockers have been put on, and are held in this position by any suitable means. For instance, as shown in the illustrated example, each leg member 6 is provided, preferably at diametrically opposite points, with tabs 8 formed with button holes 9. These tabs 8 and the button holes 9 cooperate with buttons 10 located at proper points on the interior of each leg member as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In the preferred arrangement the tabs 8 in the normal condition of the garment, depend from the leg members 6 in registry with the outer and inner seams respectively, the buttons 10 in such case being also located in registry with said seams at a distance inwardly from the free ends of said leg members 6.
When the tabs 8 are-connected with the buttons 10, the ends of the leg members 6 are draped gracefully inward and when in position on the wearer give the desired fullness and the bloomer effect to the garment without in any way interfering with the freedom of movement of the wearer and without binding or clamping any part of his person. The arrangement is such that the ends of the leg members 6 are securely held against unintentional dropping so that the intended appearance of the garment is preserved at all times and yet by simply detaching the tabs 8 and buttons 10, said ends may readily be extended downward, as shown to the left in Fig. 1.
It will, of course, be understood that the location of the button holes 9 and buttons 10 may be reversed with respect to the leg members and tabs from that shown in the drawings and also that these elements, as
Well as the tabs themselves may be replaced by other equivalent devices whereby the same results may be obtained.
My improvement in addition to the advantages so far described also does. away With the necessity for special construction in the leg members and avoids entirely the use of buckles, tapes and kindred devices at the free ends of said leg members. At the same time, my invention provides a garment in which all of the desirable features as to appearance and comfort are included and in which all of the, objectionable features prescut to' a great extent in existing garments oil the type in question are missing.
The characterof my improvement makes it easy to manipulate and presents the garment to the purchaser in a condition ready to Wear, without necessitating the addition of any, attachments by. the purchaser of the garment prior to use.
{arious changes, other than those referred to, may be made Within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention. a
I claim:
The combination of a pair of knickerbockers having the free end portions of its leg members turned inwardly to produce a bloomer effect, tabs carried by said leg sections at diametrically opposite points in registry with insealns and outseams respectively and provided with buttoirholes and buttons located at diametrically opposite points registry with inseams and outseams; respectively in each, leg section Whereby said end portions are detachably held in their inturned positions.
