GARTER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patenten rei. a, raie.
Application led December 23, 1914. `Serial No. 878,647.
Be it known that I,'FRED r zen ofthe United States, and val resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, Ahave invented a new and useful i Improvement in Garters, of which the fol- .lowing is a specification.
Myinvention relates to garters, arm bands and thelike, and has for its object :the provision of a'siinple,eiiicient device ofV this character comprising'means adapted to support theV devicevonapart of the wearers body in a manner to permit the free action of the 'blood, nerves,muscles, etci, of-such part.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The improvementconsists in substantially' Athe combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter set 'forth and claimed and will l. be best understood upon reference to the ac- Veyelet 10,l detachably engaginga button' 11 on another-ofthe upper corners of portion 5.
In Fig.' 3 I have shown the application Vof my invention to a sleeve 'band of conventional construction. The sleeve band com. .prises an elastic web band 12in annular .companying drawing, lforming apart 'of this specication and in which,
Figure 1 is a view showing the application ofja garter, embodying ,my invention, in use; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top view of the f same; Fig. 3 is a top .view of an arm band embodying my invention on a smaller scale than Fig. 2 is shown;l Fig. '4' is an enlarged sectiontaken on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing a modication of the members.
I havev shown'myinvention as applied to gartersiand' army bands of conventional con.-l structions. vlThese applications w`ll enable those skilled in the arts toembo u -my invention to any formoffband used on the body of a wearer, where such band prevents proper action of any part ofhis body.
The garter proper,shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is one ofthe ordinarytype worn by men and -comprises a substantiallv triangular portion 5, having a clasp `6 at.v its lower corner adapted to engage the upper edge of the hose 7. To one ofthe upper corners of the portion-is secured an elastic band 8 and the latter is doubled yat its other end andprovided with a buckle r9 by means of which the band may be adjusted to diierent sizes.. On the doubled portion of the band 8 is. an
T. HILL, 'a Cia form with its ends secured together as at 13.
My invention is equally applicable to garters formed of annular elastic webs and worn by women and children. This latter yform of garter when embodying my invention, would have the appearance of the arm,
band shown in Fig. 3.
My invention consists in applying mein- I bers 1.4 to the inner side of bands 8 in Fig. 1, 12 in Fig. 3, and other similar bands (not l shown) in a manner to hold large portions of such bands away from parts of the wearers body underlying the bands, (see 15, Fig. 3).A Conventional garters, arm bands and the like, depend, for their utility, uponv I gripping portions of thewearers body sufficiently tight to prevent slipping thereon. In
doing this, these parts of the body are 1 gripped so tightly that. the circulation of the blood, operation of the muscles, and the sensitiveness of the nerves in such parts of the Ibody are greatly impaired. My inventionl overcomes these faults in the ordinary devices 'of the character mentioned by supporting portions of the'devices away from the limbs, or other parts of the body of the wearer, thereby preventingthe supported` portions of the bands of the devices` from gripping the parts of the body under such supported portions of the device. By per mitting portions of the limb, or otherl part of the body, under the band'of the device, l
to be freed from the gripping pressure of the device, the operation of blood, muscles and nerves is not aii'ected. lThe members 14 are preferably made up of a comparatively i'irm substance 16 having a soft' cov-` ering 17 inclosing it. The members 14 may;
be secured to the bands 4Sand 12 by stitchings" through the bands and covering 17 or in any other convenient manner. Membersl 14 may also be made of a single body 18,
(Fig. 5) vofv rubber or felt composition when so desired and in such shapes as may be desired, that lindicated being preferred.
10 edges thin, providing means whereby great-V est stress on the convex side will be sustained at the central portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this, specication, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, 0n this 19th 1;
day of December, A. D. 1914.
