Description

Aug. 12, 1947;
E. v. LE BLANC 2,425,479
GARTER Filed June 14, 1946 [jig/Emma.
Patented Aug. 12, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a garter, particularly to endless garters used to hold stockings or shirt sleeves and the like in a predetermined position.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a garter with a portion that is intended to extend beyond a stocking or a sleeve and will adhere to the flesh to thus hold the stocking or sleeve fixedly in place.
Since a person moves around and assumes many different positions during his or her waking hours it is my object to provide a garter that allows for certain stresses and strains a garter is subjected to without slipping from its predetermined position.
A further object is to provide such a garter that is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and to use.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a combination and arrangement such as is disclosed by the drawings and specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am en.- titled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my garter in position on the leg of the user, the dash lines indicating the upper edge of the stocking below the garter.
Figure 2 is a front e-levational view of a modified form of my garter.
Figure 3 is an enlarged, longitudinal sectional view of my garter showing its top and bottom edges tapered.
Figure 4 is an enlarged, diagrammatic view showing an arrangement of elastic threads and adhesive material on the upper and lower portions of the garter.
Figure 5 is an enlarged, diagrammatic view showing another arrangement of elastic threads and adhesive material on a part thereof.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a garter showing the adhesive material on the inner surface thereof.
As illustrated in said Figure 1, my garter has a body portion I0 embodying elastic or other extensi ble material, the lower portion ll of which body, when in use, extends around a stocking S as shown in said Figure 1. The upper or anchor portion l2 of said garter directly contacts the flesh or bare leg of the wearer. Said upper portion 12 has an adhesive material A on the inner surface thereof. This adhesive material is commonly available in various forms such as latex, crude rubber in tacky form, neoprene or other synthetic rubber, or an adhesive cement, which remains somewhat soft and elastic is suitable. It must be easily removable and yet remain tacky,
so that it will not be painful when the garter is taken off, and yet can be used repeatedly.
This adhesive carrying upper portion l2 serves as an anchor for said garter, since the adhesive holds it in a predetermined position on the leg or arm of the wearer. As shown in said Figure 4, if the stocking also requires an adhesive to hold the lower portion I I of the garter on it the whole inner surface of said garter may have said adhesive A.
When my garter is made of the usual fabric l4 and elastic threads 15 said threads may extend circumferentially on both said upper and lower portions as shown in said Figures 1, 4 and 6. However, it is also advantageous to have longitudinally extending elastic threads I! that are part of said upper portion l2, as illustrated in said Figures 2 and 5.
Since it is desired that said upper portion l2 hold its predetermined position on the leg or arm of the user, this arrangement of longitudinally extending threads permits some yielding of a portion of the garter, when the arms or legs are flexed, in the direction of greatest stress.
It is desirable to apply adhesive A only to the upper part l2a of the upper portion 12 of my garter so that the lower part I2b will not adhere to the leg or arm, but will be free to move. This is illustrated in said Figure 5.
What I claim is:
1. An endless garter having an elastic body portion to extend around the limb of the wearer having a lower portion adapted to engage a portion of a garment, and having an upper portion adapted to directly engage the limb of the wearer, said upper portion only embodyin adhesive on the inner surface thereof, said lower portion being untreated with adhesive.
2. An endless garter having an elastic body portion to extend around a limb of the wearer having a lower portion adapted to engage a portion of a garment, said lower portion embodying elastic threads extending circumferentially,
and having an upper portion adapted to directly engage the limb of the wearer embodying elastic threads extending longitudinally of said garter, the upper part only of said upper portion having an adhesive on the inner surface the lower part thereof being untreated with adhesive.
