BRASSFERE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 17, 1920.

BRAssIEnE.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1920.
Substitute for application Serial No. 817,302, filed February 7, 1914. This application filed. January 17,
1920. Serial No. 352,226.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, M NNnso'rA B. J ACK- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guthrie, in the county of Logan and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brassieres, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wearing apparel and more particularly to a brassiere and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of t iis character which may be used for nursing, maternity or common use.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a garment which will overcome the difiicultios heretofore experienced in the use of slips of this character and which will be comfortable in every respect, when worn.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufactureand one which will be very efii'ient in use.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the'novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
\ In the accompanying drawing forming a, part of this application,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, parts being broken away and parts in se tion.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device showing the rear thereof, as opposed to the showing of the front in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detailperspective view showing the slot in the front section and the manner of securing the same to the main skirt portion of the device.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of this portion of the device. with parts in section.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the main slip, consisting of an up per waist portion 2 and a lower skirt portion 3, the waist line therebetween being indicated as 4. These waist and skirt portions may be formed in one piece or of gores, as
desired and the upper or waist portion 2 is provided with the usual arm holes 5 which are reinforced tov form shields, as indicated at 6. The slip or main body 1 is slit in front, as indicated at 7 and extends from the upper or neck portion thereof to any desired point in the skirt portion 3 of the same. The edges of this waist, at the upper portion of this slit are provided with fasteners of any desired type, as indicated at 8, whereby this upper front portion may be readily fastened together, when desired. The waist portion 2 is provided in the front, on opposite sides of the slit 7 therein, with the laced darts 9, which admit of said waist portion being contracted or expanded, as desired, for obvious purposes. The front portion of the neck band or the like of the waist portion 2 of this device is cutaway, as indicated at 10 and the remaining portion of the neck of this main garment is provided with an edging of embroidery, as indicated at 11.
I have also provided an additional front section 12, which consists of an upper waist portion 13 and a lower skirt portion 14, the latter being secured at its side edges, along the side seams of the skirt portion 3 .of' the main settion of the device. The securement along the side seams of the skirt 3 between said skirt 3 and the skirt 14, extends upwardly to a point a short distance below the waist line of the garment, thus providing a slit along the sides of the device between the front section and the main section of the device, as indicated at 15.
Theupper or waist portion 13v ofv this front section is tapered along its side edges and the extreme upper end of the waist portion 13, at one side thereof, is secured to the upper or neck portion of the waist portion 2, such securement being at the point indicated as 16. The opposite side edge of the waist or upper portion 13 of the section 12 is adapted to be secured to the adjacent portion of the upper portion 2 of the main sec tion of the device, by means of fasteners indi 'ated as 17 The upper edge of the waist portion 13, when the latter is properly applied in position, forms a continuation of the upper portion 2 and is provided with the edging, such as described and indicated at 11.
This upper or waist portion 13 of the sec tion 12 is taped from the upper edge of the waist line, as indicated at 1.8 and may be provided with whale bones or light steels, at these points, if desired. As stated, the side edges of this waist portion 13 of the section 12, tapers smaller toward the upper edge thereof and continuing from the tapered side edges outwardly, are the tongues or tabs 19, the free ends of which are connected with tying tapes 20. In the application of the device to use, these tabs extend partially around the waist portion to admit of the tapes being crossed and drawn in front of the garment and tied at this point.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved garment, the
manner of applying the same to use will be readily undersood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construrtion, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient in use. It will be understood that the upper waist portion 2 may be used separate,
without the skirt portion 3, if so desired, without changing the construction of either part.
\Vhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in, the
minor details of construction may be resort ed to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any 'of the principles of the in vention. I
If desired, rubber or other elastic material may be inset within each of the darts 9 curing the slit portions together, laced darts arranged in the waist and disposed upon opposite sides of'the slit, afront section comprising at waist and a skirt portion, the latter being secured for the greater portion of its length tothe side seams of the first men tioned skirt portion, the securement between said skirt portions terminatinrr below the waist line to form slits between the skirt portions at the sides thereof, one side edge of the waist portion-of said front section being secured at its upper end to the first mentioned waist portion, means for removably fastening the opposite side edge of the waist portion of said front section to the first mentioned waist portion, continuing tabs formed on the side edges of the waist portion at the waist line thereof, and tying strings secured to the ends of said tabs, as and for the purpose set forth. 7 y
2. A garment of the class described including a waist and a skirt portion secured together and slit in the front from the neck portion thereof downwardly to a point below the waist line of the same, means for securing the slit portions together, darts arranged in the waist and disposed upon opposite sides of the slit, a front section comprising a waist and a skirt portion, the latter being secured for the greater portion of its length to the side seams of the first mentioned skirt portion, the securement between said skirt portions terminating below the waist line to form slits between the skirt portions at the sides thereof, one side edge of the waist portion of said front section being secured at its upper end to the first mentioned waist portion, means for removably fastening the opposite side edge of the waist portion of said front section to the first mentioned waist portion, continuing tabs formed on the side edges of the waist portion at the waist line thereof, and tying strings secured to the ends of said tabs, as and for the purpose set forth. i
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
