2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in brassieres and a particular object is to provide a stretchable waist band in which the two half sections underlying the two breast pockets are'normally arranged in an angular or inverted V- shaped disposition so that, when the garment is fastened about the wearer, these sections will be straightened out to exert an uplifting action on ie bust of the wearer.
Another object is to provide stiffening areas in the waist band adapted to give diaphragm control while permitting the band to have sufficient elasticity in the circumferential direction of the garment for relatively free breathing.
Proceeding now to a more detailed description, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front plan view of a brassiere embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of the garment as it appears when fastened about the wearer.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, enlarged, taken along the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the brassire embodying my invention comprises a pair of breast pockets 5, a waist band 6 underlying said breast pockets and side panels 1 extending from the outer side edges of the breast pockets and waist band and having complementary fastening means 8 at their free ends for securing the garment about the wearer.
Waist band 6 is divided into two half sections it! of one-way stretch elastic material, adapted to stretch in the circumferential direction of the garment. Sections ID are pre-formed and are tubular in cross-section as shown in Fig. 3. The two sections H] are joined at their inner side edges to an inelastic strip l I by suitable stitching and are normally an-gularly disposed in substantially inverted V-formation. Each section In is secured at its upper edge to the lower edge of the adjacent breast pocket as indicated at 12 and at its outer side edge to the adjacent edge of side panel 1 as indicated at [3. Each tubular section It) is provided with a stiffening member l4, preferably of inelastic material, arranged to extend from the inner side edge a substantial distance toward the outer side edge of the band. The result of this arrangement of sections In and in elastic stifiening members I4 is to have a waist band with a central portion of considerable length which is held against stretching by the stiffening members 14 and which is free to exand throughout that portion of the waist band extending beyond the outer ends of the stiffening members. The latter gives a diaphragm controlling eifect, which could not be obtained if these stiffening members were omitted from the elastic waist band.
As previously stated, the waist band sections 10 are normally disposed in inverted V-formation so that when the garment is fitted about the wearer sections ill will be stretched causing them to be substantially straightened out and thereby exert an uplifting action on the bust of the wearer. The stiffening members I4 provide a stiffened area in the central portion of the waist band which tends to control the diaphragm while the remainder of the elastic material in the waist band is relatively free to expand and contract in the circumferential direction of the garment to permit freedom of breathing Of the wearer.
Having thus described what I now believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes and modifications may be resorted to within the scope and spirit of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a brassiere of the character described, a pair of breast pockets secured together at their inner terminal portions, and a waist band of preformed tubular elastic material having its upper edge secured to the lower edge of the breast pockets and adapted to stretch circumferentially of the garment, said waist band being normally secured throughout its length to the breast pockets in inverted V-formation with its apex underlying the inner terminal portions of the breast pockets and provided with central inelastic stiffened members arranged within the said tubular band and extending in opposite directions from the center lin Of the said waist band to points spaced from the ends of said waist band to hold said waist band against stretching, said elastic waist band being adapted to exert an uplifting action on the bust with the stifiening areas of the waist band exerting a diaphragm control on the wearer.
2. In a brassiere of the character described, a pair of breast pockets secured together at their inner terminal portions, a pair of waist band sections underlying said breast pockets and secured thereto, said waist band sections comprising preformed tubular elastic strips normally secured throughout their lengths to the lower edge of the breast pockets and to each other at their inner side edges in inverted v forrnation and adapted to be stretched circumferentially of the garment to exert an uplifting action on the breasts of the wearer, and a stiffening member 2,526,316 3 arranged within each of said tubular strips to REFERENCES CITED extend from the inner side edge a substantial distance toward the outer side edge of each waist band section to provide diaphragm control when The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
