Description
Aug. 9, 1932.
G. M. P. YERKES BRASSIERE Filed Dec. 30,1951
INVENTOR M -BY I ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GABRIELLE M. P.'YEBKES, 0F HARTSDALE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO G. M. POIX, INC 0] NEW YORK, N. 2., A CORPORATION 01F NEW YORK BEASSIEBE Application filed December 80, 1931. Serial No. 588,891.
My invention consists in a brassiere which is composed of two breast portions, two tapered side portions and two attachment straps, elastic gores being inserted in the 5 top of the brassiere between the breast and side portions; the parts being so combined and shaped that the breasts of the wearer will be closely confined and firmly held in position and so that the attaching straps may be crossed well down on the back and passed to the front at substantially the waist line. This garment will eliminate the necessity of using shoulder straps, thus permitting it to be worn with low neck backless evening 5 gowns without disclosing unsightly straps either across the back or over the shoulders of the wearer.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents a front view of the brassiere as in use;
Fig. 2 represents a back view of the same;
Fig. 3 represents a side view of the brassiere when in use; and
Fi 4 represents an inside view of the brasslere laid out flat.
The brassiere may bemade of lace, net, or other desired material, and it comprises two somewhat fulled breast portions 1 and 2 terminating in downwardl tapered side portions 3 and 4 having elastic attaching straps 5 and 6 extending therefrom. Elastic gores 7 and 8 are inserted in the top edge of the garment between the breast and tapered side portions.
The lower edge 9 of the garment is made inelastic and is shown as taped. The upper edge 10 of the breast portion of the garment and the upper edges 11 and 12 of the side portions of the garment are also made inelastic, said top edges in the present instance being folded over to produce a hem.
The garment is reinforced from its upper to its lower edges by vertical seams 13 and 14 along the side edges of the breast portions 1 and 2 and a vertical plait 15 between the breast portions. Seams 16 and 17 are provided along the outer edges of the gores 7 and 8, which seams meet the seams 13 and 14 along the other sides of the gores 7 and S at v a point a short distance above the bottom edge of the garment.
The breast portions 1 and 2 of the garment are transversely reinforced by plaits 18, 19, which extend across the breast portions about midway between the top and bottom edges of the garment.
The attaching straps 5 and 6 are preferably elastic and' may be provided with any suitable means for securing them together at the front, the means being herein shown as a button 20 on one strap and a plurality of buttonholes 21 on the other strap.
The parts are so shaped and combined that when the brassiere is worn the attaching straps will be crossed well down on the back of the wearer and brought to the front substantially at the waist line. This garment, because of its shape and the elastic gores interposed between the breast and side portions, does not require shoulder straps to keep it in lace.
It 1s evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope ofmy invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is: 1. A brassiere comprising two fulled breast portions, tapered side portions, the ends of which are spaced a. material distance apart when the brassiere is in use and attaching straps extending from the side portions, elastic gores of considerable depth being inserted in the top edge of the garment between the breast and side portions to maintain the brassiere in place without the use of shoulder straps.
2. A brassiere comprising two fulled breast portions, downwardly tapered side portions, the ends of which are spaced a materlal distance apart when the brassiere is 15 In testimony tions to maintain the brassiere in place without the use of shoulder straps.
3. A- brassiere com rising two fulled breast ortions, tapers side portions, the 5 ends of which are spaced a material distance 4 apart when the brassiere is in use and attach ing straps extending from the side ortions, elastic gores of considerable depth eing inserted in the top edge of the garment between the breast and side portions to maintain the brassiere in lace without the use of shoul der straps, e bottom ed e of the garment being made inelastic and t e top edge being made inelastic except at the ores.
that I claim the foregoing as my invention, ii have signed my name this 24 day of December 1931.
GABRlELLlB M. P. YERKES.
