Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. STROH- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county ofBlair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lip-Guards for Drinking Vessels, of which the following is a specification. a
The invention relates to a mouth protector, and more particularly to the class of lip guards for drinking vessels.
The primary object of. the invention is the provision of a guard or protector of this character wherein on the application thereof to a drinking vessel it will avoid the'lips of the mouth of a erson from coming in contact with the b0 y of such vessel, thereby rendering the use of the same thoroughly sanitary.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a guard or protector of this character which is especially useful in hotels, at soda fountains, and in fact all public places where people are compelled to drink after others, also where it is impossible to use sanitary drinking vessels, the protector or guard being of novel form so that when applied to the drinking vessel will have the advantage of protecting the mouth of a person from germs,.as such germs are not ordinarily contracted from the contents of the vessel as often as they are from the vessel itself.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a guard or protector of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily applied to and removed from a vessel, and will not in any manner inconvenience the person while drinking therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a protector or guard of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable undefficient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out 1n the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing z Figure 1 is a perspective View of the protector or guard constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through a drinking glass showing the protector applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the protector.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the guard or protector comprises a plate A, which is made in substantially U-shape to form convergent inner and outer apron- like sections 5 and 6, respectively, which are of segmental form, the section 5 being of considerably less extent than the section 6, and this plateismade from any pressable material, and may be made in any shape desired.
The portion of the plate between the sections 5 and 6 thereof, or at the bight therebetween, is formed with a corrugation 7 so as to permit the separation of the said sections, whereby the guard or protector can be readily and easily applied to different sizes of drinking vessels. The material from which the guard or protector is made should be impermeable to fluids, possessing a certain degree of rigidity and sufficient elasticity to adapt itself to arcs of circles of different degrees, while the corrugation 7 will permit it to adapt itself to different thicknesses of the rims of drinking vessels.
In the application of the protector or guard the same is brought into "position to bridge the wall of the drinking vessel so that the inner section 5 will overlap the inner surface of the said wall, while the outer section 6 will overlap the outer surface thereof. and on pressing downwardly upon the guard or protector it will be brought into a position so that the lips ofthe mouth of a person can contact therewith and be guarded against contact with the body of the vessel so that there will be no possibility of the spreading of diseases from germs present on the surfaces ofthe body of the vessel when the same is used by different persons.
It is to be clearly understood that the guard or protector can be made from any materials that can be pressed, formed or molded.
\Vhat is claimed is A lip protector comprisinga blank cut and bent to provide spaced apronlike sections of substantially segmental shape, and a connecting portion therebetween, the sections being convexed and arranged in converging relation to each other, one section being of considerably less size than the other section, said connecting portion being formed with a corrugation to permit ex pansion thereof.
