To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JUAN DIEGUEZ x Lornz and FRANoIsco ALoAi'IIz Y BASCOMPTE, respectively citizens of the Republic of Cuba, and residents of Habana, Cuba, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lip-Guards, of which the follow- This invention relates to lip guards; and its object is to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to an ordinary glass, cup orv other drinking vessel in such a way as to eifectiv'ely prevent contact of the lips with the edge of the glass, and' which may be detached therefrom with equal facility and, if. desired, put aside by its owner for subsequent re-use'.

The invention also resides in the provision of a device of,the character above indicated, which is so constructed as to give notice to the original purchaser in case of its having been'previously used.

Other and furtherobjects and advantages will be set forth and become apparent in the course of the following-description; but it is to be understood that the invention is not limitedlto the precise structural details of the embodiment described, but is suspectible of modification and changes within its scope as hereinafter claimed. Parts and features of the invention may be also utilized without others, and in other and different environments.

The invention, as represented in the drawing, takes the form of a clip or guard, constructed from a single strip or blank of suitable sheet material, metallic or non-metallic, but preferably resilient, and which is folded upon itself to provide outer and inner wings 'or members .1 and 2 and a connecting portion or bend 3. The latter portion is disposed at the tops of the wings, as

shown, so that the device as a whole may be regarded as having an inverted U shape in vertical section; and the said wings or members, as well as the part 3, are curved transversely so as to fit conformably against the outer and inner surfaces of the wall of LIP-GUARD.

in this instance the inner wing or member from the glass. The wings converge slightl toward each other, so as to grip the .wal of the glass more tightly, and in the construction illustrated areshown as having their lower portions arranged in the manner just explained; but it is to be understood that the converging portions may be located elsewhere than at the lower or free ends of the wings and that the latter may even be made to diverge at their free ends.

In order that the purchaser of the device may assure himself that it has never before been used, means are provided whereby any revious use will be visibly indiis cated. either or both of which may be adopted, one of the means in question being governed by the attachment of the device to the uch means may be of two types, I

drinking glass, and the other one by the chemical action upon it of the water or other liquid with which the glass is filled. The first-mentioned means comprises a seal 6 of some easily frangible or rupturable material such as wax, paper, etc., which is located in and bridges t e space between the free ends of the wings so as to be broken by contact with the edge of the glass when the device is forced thereover. The other protective means consists of a small wafer or the like which is indicated at 7 and is applied'to the outer face of the inner wing 2, this wafer being saturated with some harmless chemical solution which, upon coming into contact with the liquid in the glass, will cause it to change its color, or will give some other equivalent indication of previous use.

As an example of the color changing chemical solution just referred to, the following may be mentioned: Any harmless vegetable tincture or extract with which thetween said I members and adapted to be broken by contact with said edge when the guard is fitted thereover.

2. A lip guard for drinkin vessels, adapted to be supported upon to edge of the vessel and provided with a wafer treated with a chemical solution which, upon contact with the contents of the vessel, will cause the wafer to change color.

3. A lip guard for drinking vessels, comprising connected outer and inner members adapted to straddle the edge of the vessel from opposite sides, the inner member being provided with a wafer treated with a chemical solution which, upon contact with the contents of the vessel, will cause the wafer to change color.

4. A lip guard for drinking vessels, adapted to be supported upon the edge of the vessel and provided with a pair of protective devices for giving notice of any previous use of theguard, one of such devlces being governed by contact with the ed e of the vessel when the guard is being tted thereupon, and the other device being governed by contact of the liquid contents of the vessel therewith.

5. A lip guard for drinking vessels, comprising spaced inner and outer members adapted to straddle the edge of the vessel from opposite sides, and a frangible seal bridging the space between said members and adapted to be broken b contact with said edge when the guard is itted thereover, the inner member being provided with a wafer treated with a chemical solution which, upon contact with the contents of the vessel, will cause the wafer to change color.
