Description

EL-L. STEWART.
DRINKING ATTACHMENT FOR BOTTLES.
APPLICATION FILED APR.'19. 1919.
' 1,341,826. I Patented June 1, 1920.

EDWIN L. STEWART, on HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGIN A.
DRINKING ATTACHMENT FOB, BOTTLES.
Application filed April 19, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Cabell, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Attachments for Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an attachment for soda and mineral water bottles, and has for its object to provide a mouth piece for such bottles which may be easily attached thereto and through which the contents of the bottle may be drunk without bringing the lips into contact with the mouth of the bottle.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind which will be simple and which may be produced at a very low cost so that it may be used as an advertising novelty.
A further object is to provide such a device made in a way that will prevent the passage of any sediment in the bottle from passing into the mouth of the user.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the device in use;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device removed from the bottle;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the device centrally thereof;
Fig. 4 is an end view.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a cap 5 which is adapted for engagement with the mouth and neck of a bottle. This cap consists of a flat circular plate 6 having a continuous flange 7 at its edge this flange being arcuate in cross section. Carried by the edge of this flange, there are a plurality of spaced resilient fingers 8, the portions of which lying adjacent to the flange? are curved to form contiuations of the curvature of the flange, the free end portions of the fingers being thus ofl'set inwardly of the flange 7.
Formed centrally through the plate 6 there is a circular opening 9, within which there is engaged a tubular fluid conducting member 10, flaredat its outer end as shown at 11 to receive the lips of the user, and provided at its inner end with a straining Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1920.
Serial No. 291,295.
screen 12. As shown, the member 10 extends inwardly a considerable distance beyond the fingers 8 when in use.
The cap 5 has engaged within the inclosure of its flange 7 a resilient washer 13, formed of cork, rubber or other suitable material, this washer having a central opening 14 which snugly fits the member 10, coinciding with the opening 9, as shown. At its edge portions, the washer 13 follows the curvature of the flange 7 slightly, as indicated at 13'.
The member 10, while fitting snugly within the openings 9 and 1 1, is nevertheless slidable therewithin, so that the inner portion of the member may be projected to different distances beyond the cap and into the bottle as will be understood. The tubular member may also be disengaged from the cap, so that the article may be more conveniently carried in the pocket.
Formed through both the plate 6 and the washer 13, there are openings 6 and 13 respectively, these openings registering with each other to permit the entrance of air to the bottle as indicated in Fig. 1.
When the present device is engaged with a bottle, as shown in Fig. 1, the curved portions of the fingers 8 will grip beneath the neck-rib A of the bottle and will clamp the cap tightly against the mouth of the bottle, this clamping action compressing the washer 13, and forcing it against the tubular mem ber 10, thus preventing leakage around the tubular member, this compression of the washer being due to the fact that the latter follows the curvature of the. flange 7, as already explained.
It will be understood, of course, that in the manufacture of this invention, I may make alterations in the proportions of the various parts, and that any suitable material may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A drinking attachment for'bottles comprising a cap member consisting of a circular plate having a curved flange at its edge portions and having an opening formed therethrough, a washer of resilient material disposed within the inclosure of the flange and against the plate and following the curvature of the flange at its edge portions, re-.
silient fingers carried by the flange and formed to engage around the neck rib of a bottle, said Washer having an opening registering with the opening of the plate and a tubular member slidably engaged through the registering openings of the plate and .washer, said member being of a size to snugly engage the Washer and plate at the portions thereof which surround the openings. v V
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
