Specification of Letters Patent. Patented} June 21, 191W}.
Application filed @ctober 7, 1909. Serial No. 521,558:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT T. TAYLOR,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Gastonville, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Closures and Seals, of which the following is a-specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. v
This invention-relates to bottle closures and seals, are to provide a bottle with a closure that can be easily removed and again replaced to seal the bottle, and to furnish a bottle with a closure that will be simple in construction, durable and highly efiicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
Other objects of the invention are to provide detachable means for positively sealing a bottle, and to provide a closure that can be advantageously used in connection with beer bottles.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is an elevation of a bottle provided with my improved closure, Fig. 2 is a similar view partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 3 isa plan of a detached closure, Fig. 4 1s a front elevation of the same, and, Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a detached closure.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes a metallic disk having the edge thereof cut away, as at 2, while the remaining edge is bent downwardly and crimped, as at 3 to form a cap adapted to slide upon the rim 4 of a bottle neck 5.
Secured to the top of the disk 1 by rivets 6 or other fastening means is a resilient strip of metal 7 having one end thereof projecting over the cutaway edge of the disk 1, the projecting edge being bent downwardly upon a curvature corresponding to the rim 4 of the bottle neck 5, whereby the projecting and the objects of my invention I end will engage under the rim and retain the closure upon the bottle neck.
The inner side of the disk 1 can be provided with a circular piece of cork 8, similar to an ordinary bottle cap, for sealing the bottle neck.
My improved closure can be easily swung over the upper end of a bottle neck, or the curved end of the resilient strip of metal can be elevated sufiiciently to permit of the closure being slidably mounted upon the bottle neck until correctly positioned, when by releasing the resilient strip of metal the curved end thereof will engage the rim 4 and retain the bottle in a closed and sealed condition.
The closure can be pressed. from sheet metal and the resilientstrip of metal, which serves functionally as a catch, easily secured to the top of the closure.
Having now described my I claim as new, is
1. A bottle closure comprising a cap formed from a fiat disk having the marginal portion at one side thereof cut-away to provide a rounded edge and the remaining part of the marginal portion bent downwardly with respect to the said rounded edge, said downwardly bent marginal portion culvilinear in vertical section and adapted to overlap the bead of a bottle neck, and a resilient strip mounted upon and centrally of the upper face of the disk and extending from the upper terminus of said bent marginal portion to beyond said rounded edge, that portion of said strip projecting from said rounded edge curved and depending at right angles with respect to said rounded edge, and detachably engaging the bead of the bottle for securing the cap' in position, and means at one side of the center of the cap opposite to the curved downwardly projecting. portion of the strip for fixedly securing one end of the strip upon the upper face of the disk.
2. A bottle closure comprising a cap formed from a fiat disk having the marginal portion at one side thereof cut-away to provide a rounded edge and the remaining part of the marginal portion' bent downwardly with respect to the said rounded edge, said downwardly bent marginal portion curvilinear in vertical section and adapted to overlap the head of a bottle neck, and a resilient strip mounted upon and centrally of the upper face of the disk and extending from the upper terminus of said bent marginal portion to beyond said rounded edge, that portion of said strip projectin from said rounded edge curved and depending at right an les with respect to said rounded edge, an detachably en aging the bead of the bottle for securm 516 ea in position,. and a plurality of ho d-fast evices at one 10 side of the center of the cap opposite to the v the strip for fixedly projecting portion of securin one end of the strip upon the up er face 0% the disk.
In testimony w ereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT T. TAYLOR.
