Description

A. C. ALLUMS COMBINED BOTTLE CAP AND OPENER Filed March 10 1924 anomto'v attozmeq Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED CLAYTON ALLUMS, OF HAZARD, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOB OF O'NEHALF TO RALPH C. HELLAB/D, OF HAZARD, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED-BOTTLE CA1? AND OPENER.
Application filed March 10, 1924. Serial No. 698,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CLAYTON AL- LUMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazard, in the county of Perry and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bottle Caps and Openers. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined bottle cap and opener, and has more particular reference to a bottle cap of the crimp type that is so formed as to carry a means whereby the cap may be removed from the bottle without requiring the presence of any other form of bottle opening means.
The primary object of the present invention is to generally improve and simplify over articles of this general nature and to provide a combined bottle cap and opener that may be manufactured and marketed at a cost but slightly greater than the cost of manufacturing and marketing the well known form of crimp bottle cap.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the different views,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a combined bottle cap and opener in position upon a hottle,
Figure 2 is a side elevatlonal vlew partly in cross sect-ion of my combined bottle cap and opener, the opener element being shown as fully associated with the cap,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, the opener member being shown as extended to a position for enabling the cap to be re moved from the bottle, and
Figure 1. is a perspective view of the cap removing means per se, that comprises the main portion of the present invention.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 indicates a bottle and 6 the cap constructed in accordance with the present invention.
It is preferable that this cap 6 be generally of the crimp form and in this instance, the top wall thereof is relatively thickened at 7 and is formed upon its top side with a slot 8 that opens at one end at the periphery of the cap. At the lower opposite edges of this slot 8, the same is incut for providing channels 9 and adapted to be slidably disposed within this slot is a similarly shaped block of wood or metal 10 that is flanged at its lower opposite edges as at 1111 for fitting into the channels 9 of said slot 8 for preventing the accidental displlacement of the block with respect to said s 0t.
For increasing the length of this block for facilitating the employment of the same in the removing of the cap 6 from the bottle 5, there is pivoted as at 12 to the outer end of said block, an extension link 13 that is normally positioned upon the outer end of said block in a manner as more clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2, this end of the block being reduced in thickness to an extent equivalent to the thickness of said extension link 13 for an obvious purpose.
The bottom side of this sliding block 10 is formed adjacent its inner end with an inclined notch 14: that is adapted for engagement with an inclined notch 15 in the second wall 7 of the cap 6 at a point directly beneath the open end of said slot 8, whereby said notch 14; of the block 10 may be associated with the lip portion formed by the presence of said notch 15 of the bottle cap in a manner as clearly shown in F igure 3, in order that this cap 6 will be removed from the bottle upon a pull upwardly of the block.
It will therefore be seen that I have provided a highly novel, simple and useful form of combined bottle cap and opener and one that will meet with all of the requirements for a successful commercial use.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. In a bottle cap wherein the top wall thereof is of a relatively thick nature and wherein said wall is formed with a cross slot that opens at one end at the periphery of said cap and wherein the thickened wall of the cap is formed with an inclined notch at the open end of said slot, of means adapted to be slidably disposed within said slot and so formed as to be associated with the notch of the cap when the same is slid out lllO llO
wardl-y ofthe cap slot in-oi'der to facilitate the removal of theca-p from the bbtt 'le.
2. In a bottle cap of the character described wherein the top Wall of said cap is formed with a cross slot that opens at one end at the periphery of the cap and wherein said top Wall is formed -Wit11-an inclined. notch at the open end of said cross slot, a block of suitable material adapted for sliding disposition Within the cross slotof the cap :and being formed :a certain point With means for co-operat-lon With said 111- clined notch of the .cap for facilitating the ture.
A-DERED CLAYTON ALLUMS.
