Description

De@ 17, '1935. F..H. MRTENS I2,024,800
SCREW TOP WRENCH Filed oct. s, i934 l l u In /1 i i Z 7/ l y nvntor Mrz/2260 Patented Dec. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCREW TOP WRENCH Frederick H. Mertens, Jersey City, N. J. Application October 3, 1934, Serial No. 746,712
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a screw' top wrench, the general object of the invention being to provide a device whereby screw tops of different sizes can be easily removed from a jar or the like or placed in position on the jar, with means whereby a pressure cap can be removed by the device.
'I'his invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In' describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is an edge View thereof.
In this drawing, the numeral I indicates the substantially L-shaped member formed with a straight shank having a substantially right angular part 2 and the numeral 3 indicates the second member which is pivoted to the part 2 as shown at 4, the two parts being reduced and overlapping each other where the pivot 4 passes through them as shown more particularly in Fig. 2. The member 3 has a straight handle-forming portion 5, its intermediate part sloping slightly outwardly and toward the part 2 as shown at 6 with the rest of .the member sloping inwardly to the part 2 as shown at 1. 'Ihis member is formed with the teeth 8 on its inner edge, the teeth extending from a point adjacent the pivot along the edge of the part 1 and over the major portion of the inner edge of the part 6. The member I is also provided with teeth 9 on its inner edge, the teeth extending from a point opposite the point of juncture of the part 6 with the part 5 and'extending a short distance into the part 2.
Thus, by placing the toothed portions of the members I and 3 over a screw cap or the like and moving the handle portions towards each other, the cap will be gripped between the two members so that it can be readily turned onto a jar or the like or off from a jar. By making the member 3 of the shape shown, the device will iit different sizes of caps.
I also provide a curved hook I on the outer edge of the member I with a portion of the outer edge sloping outwardly toward the part 2 in a substantially straight line as shown at I I so that this arrangement provides means for removing a cap from a jar or the like which is held on the jar by pressure or friction and by making the part I I as shown so that the cap can be removed without bending the same, so that it can be put back in place and used until the contents of the jar 10 have been used up.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim. f
I claim:
A wrench of the class described, comprising a substantially L-shaped member providing a straight long arm and a straight short arm, the inner edge of the long arm having a toothed portion which extends from a point an appreciable distance from the free end of the long arm to a point on the inner edge of the short arm a slight distance beyond the junction of the two arms, and a second member having an elongated straight handle forming part, an elongated substantially straight part having one end pivoted to the extremity of the short arm of the first member, said substantially straight part of the second member diverging from the toothed portion of the long arm of the first member and said second member having an intermediate portion connecting the other end of the diverging part with the inner end of the handle forming part and arranged at substantially right angles to the diverging part and extending inwardly from said diverging part, the inner edge of the diverging part and said intermediate part being toothed, whereby the space between the toothed portions oi the two members gradually increases from the short arm to the handle portions, with the handle portions located close together.
