UNITED STATES ron JAMES, or BRoWNWoon'MrssoUnr.
BOTTLE CAPPER.
Application led July 11, 1925.
The object of this invention is the provision of a simple device for applying crown caps for sealing bottles A further object is the provision of a means for this purpose which will readily operate upon different sized bottles for sealing bottles.
A still further object is the provision of a means for this purpose which may be cheaply manufactured and commercialized, easily arranged in active position and positive in operation.
'Io the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.l
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective vie-w showing the improvement in active position.
Figure 2 is an approximately central longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of'Figure 2.
As disclosedL by the drawings I make use of a metal tubular member 1 whose lower end is widened by a depending skirt portion 2 and whose top is thickened and closed eX- cept for a central threaded opening therethrough. Screwed through the opening in the top 3 of the tubular member 1 there is a plug 4l. The plug has its inner end formed with a depression providing a. socket 5 for the reception of a crown cap 6 to be arranged on the beaded end at the neck of a bottle 7. The bottle, is, of course, inserted through the skirt end of the tubular member 1.
The cross sectionally rounded plug l has its outer end formed with a substantially rectangular slot or groove in which is received a. plate S. A screw or similar element 9 holds one end of the plate in the groove and the opposite end of the plate is provided with an outstanding handle 10. The skirt 2 of the tubular or body member 1 is cutaway at two of the opposite sides thereof as is indicated by the numeral 11. One end of the skirt has a circumferential but comparatively small slot 12 therethrough, the opposite portion of the skirt being provided with a. similar but longer slot 13. The slot 13 is of a size to receive therethrough the semicircular jaw portions 14 and the handle members 15. The jaws, at t-he ends thereof oppo- Seral No. 42,959.
lcondition before the neck of the bottle 7 isV inserted in the tubular body 1. The han dles 15 are then brought together so that the jaw portions 14 firmly grip the neck of the bottle therebetween. Prior to this it should have been stated that the cap G is previously inserted in the mouth or socket of the plug 4 or the said cap may loosely reston the mouth of the bottle before the said bottle is arranged in the tubular member 1. The handle 10 is then operated to turn the screw plug, forcing the same toward the neck of the bottle, and causing the cap 6 to be properly crimped around the beaded edge of the said mouth of the bottle.
IVhile I have illustrated a satisfactory embodiment of my improved device my features of invention are capable of extended application and I do not wish to be limited to the specific structure herein described.
Having described the invention, I claim z-v A crown Vcap crimping device, comprising a tubular member having one of its ends at the opposite sides thereof widened outwardly and flanged downwardly and said flanges having aligning slots, one of which being of a. greater length than the other, a clamping member comprising a handle having rounded portions providing jaws and whose ends lap and are pivotally connected, and which pivot is received in the short slot of one of the flanges, 'while the handles pass through the long slot in the second flange, spring means influencing the handles away from each other, and thereby holding the jaw portions of the handles in the slotted flanges, a threaded block screwed through the threaded flange of the tubular member and having an inner socket end and an operating handle having one end let in the block.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
J OE JAMES.
