FRUIT JAR GLASS TIGHTENER Filed Mafch 50,1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Nov. 15, 1932. A. WITTWER FRUIT JAR GLASS TIG'HTENER Filed March 50, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor 2 III A. Wz'ziwer' Patented Nov. 15, 1932 UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE mm JAR Grass 'rrenrmmn Application filed March 30,
This invention relates to a fruit jar glass lid tightener and has for its prime ob ect to provide a structure of this nature which is simple, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, easy to manipulate, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it'is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, in the combination and arrangement of parts as-will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the structure embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical section therethrough taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a band.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the thumb screw.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the cap. Figure 7 is a perspective view of the bar, and
Figure 8 is a perspective view ofone of the straps.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes the neck of a glass jar, numeral 6 the rubber gasket and numeral 7 the glass lid. These parts just de scribed are conventional.
Numeral 8 denotes a bar longer than the diameter of the neck 5 and the ends of which are slotted as at 9. Numerals 10 denote straps twisted at right angles intermediate their ends and the upper ends are pivoted as at 11 in the slots 9. On the lower ends of the straps are pins 12 which incline upwardly and inwardly. Numeral 14 denotes an inverted saucer shape cap of resilient sheet metal or the like to be set on top of the lid 7 perspective view of the split and in the center of this cap 14 there is loosely swiveled the lower end of a thumb screw 15 which is threaded through a central opening in the bar 8. Numeral 16 denotes a split band 60 having apertured cars 17 projecting out 1932. Serial No. 602,022.
wardly from the ends thereof so that a bolt 18 may be engaged therewith for tightening the band about the neck 5 as shown in Figures 2 and 3. This band is provided with diametrically opposed apertures 19 into which extends the pins 12.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that after the band has been assembled about the neck the other parts may be quickly and easily assembled and the thumb screw manipulated to press the cap 14 downwardly against the lid 7 to tightly seal the lid.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of thisinvention will now be clearly understood withouta more detailed description thereof.
It is apparent that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a structure of the class described, a split band, means for holding the split band about the neck of a jar, said band being provided at opposite points with openings inclining upwardly and inwardly, a bar, on the ends of the bar and having their free ends provided with inwardly and upwardly inclined pins to engage in the openings, a thumb screw threaded through the bar, and a lid engaging member swiveled on the end of the thumb screw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ADOLPH WITTWER.
