CARBOY SEAL Filed Oct. 28, 1947 ATTDRN EYS .atented Mar. 29, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE CARBY SEAL Samuel R. McQuain, South Charleston, W. Va.
Application October 28, 1947, Serial No. 782,597
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a carboy seal.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a carboy seal which is adapted to be tted about the neck of the carboy to retain the stopper in place at all times while the carboy is being handled and at the same time provide means for retaining a vapor or fume cloth about the neck and stopper of the carboy and wherein the relthe neck portion of the carboy to retain the i stopper and fume cloth thereon which is of sim- `ple construction, easy to apply, inexpensive to manufacture, has positive locking action and is efcient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understandz ing of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in
, which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a neck portion of a carboy with the fume cloth and carboy seal of the present invention attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the carboy seal fixed about the neck portion of the carboy.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the carboy seal fixed over the neck portion and stopper of the carboy and without the fume cloth being retained thereunder.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevational view of the carboy seal detached from the carboy.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the bottom sealing ring.
Referring now to the figures, I0 represents a neck portion of a carboy. This neck portion has a thickened top II forming a shoulder i2. Into the neck there may be tted a stopper I3 having a lug projection I4 thereon with a hole i5 extending therethrough to receive a tag or a cord to support the Stoppers when not in use. The stopper I3 is tted tightly into the neck portion I'I of the carboy when the same has been filled with acid or other chemicals. Over the stopper and neck portion there may be extended a vapor or fume cloth I 6 and about this can be placed my carboy seal II which is adapted to retain the cloth and the stopper I3 over the neck II. The seal I1 comprises a split band I8 having radially extending end portions I9 and 20 for receiving a clamping screw 2| adapted to receive a wing nut 22 which when tightened will draw the band I8 about the neck portion I0 and under the shoulder I'2 of the thickened part II. The band I8 has radially outwardly extending lug portions 22 and 23 through which the respective ends 24 and 25 of a U-shaped member 26 are extended. These ends 24 and 25 are threaded and receive respec- 2 tively wing nuts 2I and 23 adapted when tightened to cause top portion 29 to be drawn tightly downwardly over the stopper I3 whereby to lock the stopper in place on the neck I0 of the carboy. The top portion 29 is split as shown clearly in Fig. 2 so as to extend over and about the lug I4 of the stopper and engage with the top thereof.
It will thus be apparent that there has been provided a, positive locking device or carboy seal which will serve, not only to retain the fume cloth I6 in place, but will retain the stopper I3 within the neck portion of the carboy. Should the fume cloth be eaten away, the stopper will be positively retained in place by the U-shaped member 26 connected to the lug portions 22 and 23 of the band I8. A positive locking engagement is made between the band and the shoulder I2 of the thickened portion II of the neck I0.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A carboy seal -for a carboy having a neck portion with a thickened top end forming a shoulder and a stopper tted in the top end and having a lug projection, comprising a vapor cloth adapted to be extended over the stopper and the neck portion, a split band adapted to be tted about the neck portion below the shoulder of the top end and a clamping screw for securing the same thereabout, the band being extended over and about the cloth to draw the same under the shoulder of the thickened top, a U-shaped member having a split top portion adapted to iit over the cloth and over the projection of the stopper and threaded ends, said band having laterally extending projections with openings therein to receive the threaded ends of the U-shaped member, and securing nuts extending over the threaded ends of the U-shaped member and adapted to draw down the U-shaped member onto the stopper and to secure the same with the stopper in place on the carboy neck portion.
