Referring to the drawings, I designates a jar having a neck 2 of the open wide mouth type commonly used in the canning of fruits. preserves and the like, and 3 a cap for closing the jar mouth. Said neck has an outer circumferential cylindrical end surface 4 terminating at its lower end in an annular seat 5 formed by a circumferential rib or enlargement 6 on the neck. The under side of the rib 6 forms an abrupt shoulder 1, preferably substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the jar and terminating in an annular neck recess 8.
The cap 3 has a downwardly projecting flange 9 adapted to have a free telescoping fit around the cylindrical end surface 4 of the neck and to seat at its outer end edge against a gasketlfl on the seat 5. There is suflicient clearance between the cap and end of the neck to permit the cap edge to be forced down firmly on the gasket to provide a tight seal with the seat 5. The cap is also provided on its top marginal edge portion with a flat annular seat II on which a pressure ring I2 rests. The ring is preferably of less thickness than the depth of the seat I! and is retained in assembled engagement with the cap by diametrically opposed shallow lugs l3 on the inner edge wall of the seat ll engaging over the ring except-at points in the ring where notches M are provided through which the lugs may pass in removing the ring from the cap.
The clamping means for the cap'comprises a segmental member 16 having a top portion ll preferably of segmental shape with a skirt portion l8 depending from its circular or arcuate edge. The cross or chord edge IQ of the top portion I! is preferably substantially straight (Cl. Mia-.88)

The skirt portion I8 of the clamping means is of a depth to extend below the rib 6 when the member I6 is mounted on a jar neck and cap and it has a reentrant portion 22 forming an internal shoulder entirely around the skirt near its lower edge for engaging under the neck shoulder 1. The edge portion of the skirt below the rib 6 fits into the neck recess 8 and serves to reinforce the skirt against radial expansion when a cap tightening stress is applied to the clamping means. When the screws 2| are loosened, the clamping member Hi can be easily and quickly removed laterally from the jar.
In the use of my improved clamping means for jar caps, a cap 3, with a pressure ring I2 assembled thereon, is placed on the jar neck with its lower edge resting on a gasket H1 in opposition to the shoulder 5. The clamping member !6 is then slipped laterally over the jar neck and cap from one side thereof and manually pressed into position thereon with the inturned portion 22 thereof engaging closely under the neck shoulder I from one end to the other of the former. The screws 2| are then tightened against the pressure ring l2 on the cap to apply an upward pull on the skirt portion of the member l6 against the rib shoulder 1 and cause a firm seating of the cap edge on the neck shoulder 5 through the medium of the gasket I0. After releasing the screws 2| the member Hi can be quickly removed from the jar and cap by relative lateral movements and the cap seal may then be broken by a prying action between the shoulder 5 and cap edge, as is apparent.
. I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination, a jar having a neck with a cylindrical edge portion and a surrounding protuberant means forming axially spaced upwardly and downwardly facing annular seats, a gasket on said upwardly facing seat, a cap fitting down over said cylinder edge portion and seating on said gasket, a segmental clamping member substantially half the size of the cap fitting thereover and having a skirt depending from its circular edge and forming a half circle to embrace substantially one half of the cover and jar neck and having an inturned flange forming a seat for engaging under said downwardly facing neck seat, and at least one screw carried by said clamping member and operable to exert a downward seating pressure on the cap and an upward pull on said skirt against it neck seat.
2. An arrangement as called for in claim 1, together with a pressure ring seating on the marginal edge portion of the cap for receiving the cap sealing thrust of the screws.
3. An arrangement as called for in claim 2, wherein the, cap and pressure ring have means cooperating to releasably retain them in assembled relation.
4. An arrangement as called for in claim 1, wherein the clamping means is operable laterally of the jar axis into and out of clamping relation thereto.
5. In combination, a jar having an open neck with a cylindrical seat edge portion and a surrounding flange at the base thereof, a gasket on said flange, a cap having a portion telescoping over said cylindrical portion and seating on said gasket, a clamping means having a top portion over said cap and a depending skirt describing a half circle'around the peripheral portions of the cap and neck concentric thereto, said skirt having portions engaging under said flange, screws carriedby said top portion and operable to act against the cap at diametrically opposite edge portions to exert outward pull on said means against said flange and a close seating of the cap on said gasket, said means being movable laterally of the jar axis into and out of clamping relation 7 thereto.
6. An arrangement as called for in claim 5, together with a pressure ring seating on the marginal edge portion of the cap for receiving the cap sealing thrust of the screws.
