This invention relates to containers, and refers more particularly to a means for closin the open end of metallic containers.

A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character specified, 15 which will automatically accommodate itself to variations in the size, and to irregularities of the surface, of the open end of the container.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a metallic container, a closure, having associated therewith, a sealing means.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a closure for metallic containers, WlllCh is easy and inexpenslve to manufacture, and strong and durable in use.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the course of the following description, and the particular features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood, however, that various changes in the form and proportion of the device may be made without departing from the spirit of the claims.

Referring now, more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 5 denotes a container which is preferably formed of metal, and
which may be of any desired size and shape; sald container being closed at one end, as shown at 6. The op osite end of the contamer is open and as the edge thereof overturned at 14,.and terminates in an external depending flange 7 arranged parallel to and extending around the entire circumference of the containerji" The open end of the container is partially closed by means of a head 8, having centrally thereof, a relatively lar e opening, and
provided with a depending ange 9 adJacent said opening. As shown in Figure 3, this head 8 is positioned within the container :1 short distance and is provided with an upstanding portion 10 which bears against the inner side of the body of the container.
The portion 10 is curled as shown at 11, which curl terminates in a. substantialily U- shaped portion formed of flanges 12 and 13; the flange 13 fitting tightly between the body of the container and the above mentioned flange 7, and the curl 11 resting upon the curl 14 thus seaming securely the head to the container, by a double locked seam.
Secured to the under side of the head 8 by means of bolts or other suitable securing means 15, is a spring collar formed of portions 16, 17 and flange 18. The section 16 is adjacent the head 8 and serves as a retaining means for. the entire collar by means of the rivet 15 passing therethrough. The section 17 extends toward the opening in head 8 and is angularly disposed with relation to section 16, and terminates in an upstanding flange 18 which bears against the depending flange 9, and tends to stififen said flange 9 against the side of a plug which will be hereinafter described. The spring flange is formed of a material which will be slightly resilient to obtain a spring pressed action on the flange 9, to secure a sealing relation for the stiffened flange at a distance below the opening.
Removably positioned within, and closing the opening in head 8, is a plug, provided with a base 19 and an upstanding peripheral wall 20 at the edge thereof.
The wall 20 is provided with an external annular groove or depression 21, and its upper portion is bent at substantially right angles, forming a flange 22 which rests upon the head 8 adjacent the opening therein, sup-' porting the plug in position and limiting the downward movement of same when being placed in position.
Positioned within the depression 21 is an elastic or compressible gasket 23, formed of rubber or other like suitable material. The gasket 23, it is obvious, may be of anyd'esired size and shape, conforming to the shape or size of the interior of the depression 21. In Figures 4 and 5, there is illustrated the preferred and modified forms,-respectively; the gasket of Figure 4, presenting in section, one curved side conforming to the sha e of the interior of the depression 21, an one fiat side adapted to engage the flange 9, of head 8, while the gasket shown in Figure 5, is circular in cross-section.
When the gasket is in position in the depression 21, it extends a short distance beyond the plane of the side of the wall 20 of the plug hence when the plug is in position within the opening in head 8, the gasket is under compression, providing a tight seal with the flange 9.
With the construction of the gasket just described, and its association with the plug and the flange 9, it is obvious that various irregularities of manufacture which inevitably occur, will be overcome by the use of said gasket, which automatically accommodates itself to such irregularities because of its compressible engagement with the flange 9.
It is further obvious that when the plug is inserted within the opening in head 8, the en agement of the gasket 23 with flange 9 w' tend to force the flange 9 in a direction opposite to that which results by the ressure of spring collar flange 18 on said flange 9; all of the elements co-operating to form a tight closure for the container.
Referring again to the above mentioned rivet 15, it is obvious that any number may be provided for retaining the spring collar in position, but it has been found desirable to use only four, as illustrated in Figure 2. Secured to each rivet 15, is a clam 24, preferably narrow and elongated, an provided with upstanding parallel lips 25, forming stiffening flanges and handles therefor.
To ensure easy operation of these clamps 24, each is secured by the rivet 15 at a point intermediate their ends, but preferably not in the center thereof. Each clamp is further provided near one end, with an opening 26, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
From the construction of the clamps 24, it can be seen that when the clamps are being turned to the position illustrated in full lines in Figure 2 there will be a certain movement of the above mentioned spring collar toward the openingl in head 8, the spring collar assuming a ifierent position,
i. e. the position resulting from pressing against the flange 9, forcing said flange toward the opening in head 8. This is due to I the slight elevation of the forward portion of the clamps 24 when they are resting on the flange 22 of the plug. This is an additional advantage in obtaining a tight closure of the plug with the flange 9. of head 8.
The sealing of the container is effected by means of wires 27 connecting the clamps 24 when said clamps are in clamping position, which wires pass through the openings 26 therein and are sealed with the customary lead seals 28.
From the above description, it s believed that the operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which t appertains, so. no further description is deemed necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
l. A container comprising a main bod portion provided with a head at eachen one of said heads having an opening therein,
a flange depending from said head adjacent said opening, a plug positioned within said opening, compressible means secured to said plug and pressing against said flange, means for clamping the p ug within the opening, and means secured to the head and to said clamping means and bearing against said flange whereb when said clamping means are in use, said flange will be forced in a direction opposite to that resulting from the pressure of the above mentioned compressible means. 7
2. A closure for containers comprising, a head secured to said container and provided with an opening, a depending flange inte gral with said head and adjacent said opening, a spring collar secured to the under side of said head, a plug for said head provided with an external annular groove, compressible means secured within said annular groove and bearing against the above mentioned flange, clamping means secured to' the head and connected to said spring collar whereby said flange will be forced in a di' rection opposite to that resulting from the ressure o the above mentioned compressile means.
3.
