- My invention relates to closures for jars and the like and it'has for its object to provide an eflicient and inexpensive closure of this class. It is also an object of this invention to provide, as a new article of manufacture, a closure gasket adapted to be interposed betweenthe cap and chime or neck of a jar or the like and by which the joint between those two parts will be effectually closed or sealed.

My invention relates to closures for jars and the like and it'has for its object to provide an eflicient and inexpensive closure of this class. It is also an object of this invention to provide, as a new article of manufacture, a closure gasket adapted to be interposed betweenthe cap and chime or neck of a jar or the like and by which the joint between those two parts will be effectually closed or sealed.
To these ends I have provided a molded closure gasket of any suitable compressible material such as rubber, paper or the like, said gasket being formed with an inner horizontal flange to seat upon the top of the chime of the jar or the like; an outer horizontal flange that is downwardly off-set relatively to said inner flange to seat upon an annular shoulder provided upon the exterior of the neck of the jar or the like at a lower level than the chime thereof, and an approximately cylindrical intermediate portion connecting said flanges that is adapted to be contracted by the jar cap against the outside of the chime. Jars of the type to which my new closure gasket is applicable are in common use and are constructed with a wire cap-engaging bail and a wire bail-shaped lever connected therewith by means of which the jar cap is clamped firmly in position upon the neck of the jar, and it is a feature of my invention that the clamping pressure of these parts holds the cap tightly seated upon the outer flange of the gasket and at the same time compresses the upper portion of the gasket between the inner side of the cap and the outer edge of the chime of the ar.
Other features of my invention are hereinafter pointed out.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jar provided with a closure constructed in accordance with my invention.

Glass jars for preserves and the like have heretofore been constructed comprising a body 1 and cup-shaped cap 2, and it is common practice to provide the body 1 with a wire ring 3 equipped with aperturedsheet metal ears 4;, one at each side of saidbody, to which are pivotally connected the opposite ends of a bail-shaped wire lever 5 to which, in turn, the opposite ends of a wire cap-engaging bail 6 are pivotally connected; The wire bail 6 is adapted to beseated'at its middle in a socket 7 provided upon the top ofcap '2, and then by swinging the lever 5downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1 the cap 2 is clamped securely in position upon an annular seat 9 provided, as usual, upon the exterior of the jar at the base of the neck 8 with'the latter extending upwardly into the cavity lO of the cap. ' Heretofore, only the joint between the seat 9 and'the rim or chime 11 of cap 2 has been scaled and this sealing was accomplished by means of a plain flat annular gasket ring of compressible rubber interposed between said parts'whi'ch was not always eife'ctive owing to irregularities of seat 9'or of the chime 11 of cap My invention provides a circular sealin gasket 12 made from any suitable compressible -material such as rubber, soft paper or the like, which is molded to provide the same with an intermediateinteriorly and exteriorly cylindrical bodyportion 13-provided at its upper end-with aninwardly extending B0 flange 14 and at its lower end with an'outwardly extending flange 15. i
This gasket 12 is fitted telescopically upon the outside of the neck 8 of the ar with its inner top flange 14 seated uponrthe chime or top of said'neck, and with its bottom outer flange 15 resting 011 seat 9; Then the cap 2 is placed in position upon the gasket 12 and firmly clamped downwardly thereon by means of bail 6 and lever 5. The annular side wall 16 of the cavity 10 of a jar of the type described is rounded or curved as shown in Fig. 1 so "thatit is in most part obliquely disposed,"approximately, with respect to thenxis ofthe jar and therefore, when the cap 2 is forced downwardlyby means of lever 5 and bail 6, the oblique wall 16 bears against the upper outer corner of gasket 12 sons to press the same both inwardly and downwardly thereby pressing the inner flange 14 against the top or chime of neck 8 and the upper end of the cylindrical intermediate or body portion 13 inwardly against the usual lip 17 provided upon the outside of the neck at the top thereof. This lip 17, together with shoulder 9, provides an annular groove upon the exterior of the neck into which the material of the gasket is crowded by the oblique Wall 16 of the cap thereby to embed the lip 17 in the material of the gasket as shown in Figure 4.
In this way my new gasket notonly seals the joint between the chime 11 of the cap 2 and the seat 9, and between the side wall of cavity 10 and the top of the chime of the jar but also between the cylindrical portion of the gasket and the exterior of the lip 17. Furthermore, since the gasket is a molded annulus having an opening at its middle, it is unnecessary to remove the same from the jar in order to have access to the contents of the latter. Another advantage to the present invention is that the gasket 12 shields the chime of the jar thus avoiding chipping or mutilation thereof, particularly the frail lit) 17.
VVhat I claim is:
1. The combination with a jar having a neck provided upon its exterior with an annular shoulder that is below the top thereof and at its top with a radially disposed annular lip which provides said neck with an annular groove disposed between said lip and said shoulder; a cup-shaped cap made upon its under side with a neck-receiving cavity whose side wall is oblique with respect to the axis of the jar, and means upon said jar for clamping said cap in position thereon, of a joint sealing gasket annulus of compressible material comprising an intermediate interiorly and exteriorly cylindrical portion surrounding said neck made at its top with an inwardly extending flange seated upon the top of said neck and at its bottom with an outwardlyextending flange clamped between the chime of said cap and said shoulder, the upper corner portion of said annulus being clamped between said oblique side wall of the cap and the lip of said neck so as to compress said annulus radially and crowd said intermediate cylindrical portion into said groove thereby to embed said lip in the material of said annulus.
2. The combination with a jar made at its top with an annular radially outstanding bead, a fiat horizontal annular shelf below and larger in diameter than said bead, and a cylindrical neck portion between said bead and shelf that is smaller in diameter than said head, of a rubber joint-sealing gasket annulus made with an interiorly and exteriorly cylindrical intermediate portion surrounding the bead and neck portion of said jar, said gasket being formed at its top with a horizontal inwardly extending flange to seat upon the top of the jar and at its bottom with an outwardly extending flange to seat upon said shelf; a rigid cap member concaved upon its bottom side to provide a circular recess of larger diameter than said head and of less diameter than the outside diameter of said shelf, the outer marginal portion of said recess being of curvilinear shape in cross-section so as to press the upper portion of said gasket obliquely downwardly toward the axis of the jar when said cap is clamped to said jar thereby to embed said bead in the material of said gasket and to contract the intermediate cylindrical portion thereof beneath said bead, and means for clamping said cap downwardly on to said gasket.
