Description

R. POULSON IIILK BOTTLE CAP LIFTER Filed June ,16.- 1928 gmma'tw Faber? 1 1118011. *3 M Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES ROBERT POULSON, OF HUTCHINSON, MIFTNESO'IA.
MILK-BOTTLE-CAP LIFTER.
Application filed June 16, 1928. Serial No. 286,019.
This invention relates to an attachment for milk bottles and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means for hingedly connecting the cap of the bottle to the bottle, with spring means for normally holding the parts with the cap in closed position so that the cap can be moved to open position by a slight pressure on a part of the device, the spring means acting to return the parts to closed position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which.:
Figure 1 is a. view showing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through Figure 1, showing the parts with the cap in open position.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates a strip of spring metal having a loop 2 formed. therein intermediate its ends which is adapted to rest upon a portion of the edge of the bottle mouth so that the strip has rocking movement on the bottle. One portion of the strip extends substantially horizontal so that it will rest upon the cap of the bottle and a pin 3 is carried by this horizontal portion 4 which is adapted to be passed through the cap so as to hold the cap between itself and the part 4. This part 4 is bent to form the terminal lip 5 and the ofi'set portion 6 which is out in two places, as shown at 7, with the metal between the cut portions bent downwardly to receive the end of the pin. The other part 8 of the strip extends downwardly and outwardly to form a handle or thumb piece and a U- shaped strip 9 of spring metal is connected with the handle part 8 in such a manner that its curved ends will engage a part of the bottle and thus act to hold the strip with the cap in closed position, as shown in Figure 1.
When pressure is applied to the handle part 8, the U-shaped member will expand as it is forced against the bottle and the part 4 and the pin 3 will move upwardly into an inclined position, thus partly raising the cap from the bottle mouth, asshown in Figure 2, so that some of the contents of the bottle can be poured therefrom. As soon as the handle is released, the spring of the member 9 will contract and thus force the handle part outwardly and the horizontal part downwardly and thus move the cap to closed position. Thus I have provided simple means for hingedly connecting the cap with the bottle, with sprin means for normally holding the parts wit the bottle. The cap can be easily and quickly connected with the device by simply passing the pin 3 through a portion of the cap. That portion of the cap 4 which engages the disk may be roughened, though this roughened part is not shown.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that I may make 30 changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a bottle and its disk closure, a member having an intermediate part engaging a portion of the upper edge of the bottle, with an end part of the member extending horizontally and the other end part extending downwardly and outwardly, means for attaching the horizontal part to the disk and spring means associated with the handle part for normally holding the device with the cap in closed position.
2. In combination with a bottle and its disk closure, a strip of metal having a horithe cap closing 7 zontal part and a part extending downpassed through the disk to hold the disk bewardly and outwardly from the horizontal tween itself and the horizontal part and a part, a loop formed at the junction of the U-shaped member of spring metal connected two parts, said loop resting upon a portion with the downwardly extending part and en- 5 of the upper edge of the bottle, a pin havgaging a portion of the bottle.
ing one end connected with the horizontal In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. part adjacent the loop and adapted to be ROBERT POULSON.
