Description

B" D. NELEON.
.CAN OPENER.
v APPLICATION FILED SEPT. H. 1920.
Patented Mare 29,, 11921 gmwm Gab/Z4 U RICHARD D. NILEON, 0F BELL, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAN-OPENER.
Application filed September 11, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. NILnoN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Bell, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to can openers and more particularly to an improved apparatus for opening metallic shoe polish boxes and similar containers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive opener attached without the use of rivets or bolts and in a manner that will permit the contents of the box to remain air tight.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device as applied to a shoe polish box of the conventional form.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the opener detached.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the container 1 is provided with a removable cover 2, and the marginal edge of the latter normally contacts with an annular flange 3 formed on the container.
An extension a is provided on the cover and this extension projects from the marginal edge of the cover and is provided with a circular opening The extension forms tab which is adapted to be bent to any desired shape whereby the opener proper may be mounted in position. The opener comprises a member 5 formed of a length of wire bent as at 6 intermediate its ends and folded upon itself to form a finger press 7 the latter being disposed at an angle to the shank 8 which is formed by parallel portions of the wire. The terminals of the wire are disposed at an angle with respect to each other and diverge from the end of the shank 8 to form the pressure arms 9 which are properly curved sothat the ends 10 may engage the annular flange 3.
The opener or member 5 is attached by inserting the shank 8 through the opening in Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Serial No. 209,739.
the tab 4 and the tab is preferably curved as indicated in Fig. 2 so that the shank will be extended outwardly at an angle while the terminals 10 of the pressure arms 9 will be permitted to engage the annular flange 3. This permits the marginal edge of the opening in the tab to form a fulcrum whereby the shank 8 acts as a lever and an inward pressure on the finger press 7 will cause the pressure arms 9 to exert a downward pressure on the annular flange 3 whereby the cover and container will be separated.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a container having a removable cover and provided with an annular flange, of a tab formed on the cover and provided with an opening, an opener member comprising a shank arranged in the opening in the tab to fulcrum on the edge of the opening for forming a lever, and diverging pressure arms formed on the shank and adapted to engage the flange at points spaced from the said tab.
2. In combination with a container having a removable cover and provided with an annular flange, of a tab formed on the marginal edge of the cover and curved upwardly in spaced relation to the cover and provided with an opening, an opener memher having a shank mounted in the opening to fulcrum on the edge of the opening, one edge of the shank being provided with a finger press whereby the shank may be manually tilted, and pressure arms formed on the shank and diverging therefrom to engage the annular flange at points spaced from the said tab.
3. In combination with a container having a removable cover and provided with an annular flange, of a tab formed on the marginal edge of the cover and curved upwardly in spaced relation to the cover and provided with an opening, an opener member having a shank mounted in the opening to fulcrum on the edge of the opening, one edge of the shank being provided with a finger press whereby the shank may be manually tilted, and pressure arms formed on the shank and diverging therefrom to engage the annular pressure on the said pressure arms to sepaflange at points spaced from the said tab, rate the cover from the said container. 10 the said tab being curved whereby the shank In testimony whereof, I have afiiXed my normally extends outwardly at an angle, signature in the presence of two witnesses.
5 the said pressure arms being curved from RICHARD D. NILEON.
the shank whereby a pressure on the said Witnesses: finger press will cause the said shank to fu1- G. A. WHIPPERMAN, crum in the opening and exert a downward JOE FIGGE.
