BOX LID REMOVER Filed Sept. 15. 1923 glvvu mdoz Patented Dec. 30, 1924.
CAR-L F. PYE, OF WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA.
BOX-LID REMOVER.
Application filed September 13, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, CARL F. PYE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Removers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to sheet metal boxes of the type generally provided for receiving shoe blacking and polish and in which the lid is difficult of removal either by reason of a close fit or a portion of the contents of the box entering the oint formed between the lid and box body.
The object of the invention is the provision of means applied to the box lid and enabling the same to be easily and readily loosened and detached by the application of force exerted by one hand, such as the pressure of the thumb in opposition to the pulling exerted by the first and second fingers.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of a box lid having opening means applied thereto, said lid being adapted to replace the cover originally applied to the box.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a side view of a box having the lid thereof provided with opening means embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a view at a right angle to Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the body of a Serial No. 682,468.
box such as generally provided for receiving shoe blacking or shoe paste and 2 is a lid or cover therefor which engages the same frictionally in a manner well understood. The invent-ion contemplates providing the lid 2 to replace the original cover applied to and closing the box when the latter leaves the factory. In accordance with the invention, the lid 2 is provided with a plunger 3, the inner end of which is enlarged, as indicated at 4, to obtain an extended bearing on the bottom of the box to prevent puncture thereof when pressure is exerted to loosen and remove the lid. The plunger 3 is provided at its outer end with an enlargement 5 for a digit of the hand, such as the thumb, to obtain a purchase upon when exerting pressure to remove the lid from the box. Oppositely disposed fingerpieces 6 are attached to the lid 2 and provide engaging means for the first and second finger of the hand. The plunger 3 is disposed between the fingerpieoes 6 and extend some distance thereabove. The sleeve 7 forms a guide for the plunger and is secured between the fin gel-pieces 6. The fingerpieces 6 are preferably of hook form to prevent slipping of the fingers and constitute parts of a strip of metal which is doubled upon itself and has its end portions oppositely curved, the sleeve 7 being secured in the fold of the strip and the latter being secured at a central point to the lid either by solder or in any other preferred way. In the preferable arrangement, the plunger 3 is disposed to one side of a central point of the lid, whereby to more readily loosen and remove the same by an application of the force to a side of the lid instead of distributing the force equally to every portion of the joint.
To remove the lid, the fingerpieces 6 are engaged by the first and second fingers of the hand and the thumb engages the outer end of the plunger 3 and by applying force such a pressure of the thumb upon the plunger 3 and a pull upon the fingerpieces 6, the cover is loosened and removed, the application of the force exerted being concentrated upon a side of the lid operating to detach the same more readily.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. Means for removing a box lid, the same consisting of a plunger mounted upon the lid and passing loosely therethrough and adapted to engage the bottom of the box, and fingerpieces attached to the lid and adapted to receive the pulling force of digits ofthe hand to act in opposition to pressure of the thumb exerted upon the plunger.
2. A box lid opener comprising a plunger V mounted loosely in the lid and enlarged at opposite ends, and finger-pieces. at opposite 15 sidesot the guide, the outerend of the plunger projecting some distance beyond the fingerpieces.
4. A box 11d opener comprising means by Whiohpressure may be exerted on the bot-V second named means engaging the lid.
