WITNESSES 8 INVENTOR ,4 TTORNEYS NATHAN ELLIS, 0F SYRACEUSE, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE CAP AND OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted Jan. 11, 1916.
Application filed February 16, 1915. Serial No. 8,539.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, NATHAN ELLIS, a cltizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle Cap and Opener, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to bottle caps, and has reference more particularly to means associated therewith whereby the cap can-be removed from the bottle withoutthe aid of the customary cap remover or opener, and
consequently dispensing with the necessity of looking for one when bottles are to be opened.
An objectof the invention is to provide a simple, convenient, strong and inexpensive cap with means for removing the same from a bottle without looking for an opener.
lVith these objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts such as will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bottle provided with a cap embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of my cap; and Fig. 4 is a plan View of a blank before the same is shaped into a cap.
Referring to the drawing, the cap is formed of a blank 4 having a tongue 5 forming an integral portion of the blank and adapted to depend from the cap when the.
same is dished, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3,
to engage the mouth of a bottle 6. Before the blank is dished the tongue 5 is provided with a pair of openings 8, and after the blank is dished the part of the tongue including the openings 8 is arcuated, as shown at 7 so that the said openings are located at the juncture of the arcuate part with the straight parts of the tongue. The arcuate part 7 of the tongue bulges away from the axis of the cap, and consequently from the bottle which the cap engages. Passing through the alining openings 8 is a wire 9, the lower end 10 of which is bent about the end of the tongue 5, the upper end 11 of the wire being hook-shaped, with the extremity of the wire bearing on the top of the cap adjacent the central part thereof. The hookshaped part of the end 11 lies in the plane of the wire 9; so does the bent end 10.
The arcuate part 7 of the tongue constitutes a bearing for the Wire. The end 10 of the wire prevents the turning of the same in its bearings, while the extremity of the end 11 forms the fulcrum for said wire 9. Consequently, when a pull is exerted on the tongue 5 which is reinforced by the wire 9, the said Wire 9 constitutes an opener whereby the cap will be removed when such a pull is exerted that the end 11 of the hook will form a fulcrum. The provision of the Wire 9 on the cap 4 forms an opener there for which is attached thereto and cannot be mislaid or lost, and which opener will obviate the necessity of looking for one when it is desired to open a bottle.
It is self-evident that, if desired, the ex tremity of the end 11 of the wire 9, in lieu of fulcruming in the central part of the cap, may be made to fulcrum at the edge of the cap diametrically opposite the tongue 5, in which the wire 9 or the opener bears. Furthermore, the cap may have a depressed portion where the extremity of the end 11 engages the same, so asto provide an additional bearing for said wire.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the' construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which'the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the. scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a bottle cap having I an integral tongue, said tongue having a bulging portion, and an opener for the cap bearing in the bulging portion and having its fulcrum on the cap top.
2. The combination of a bottle cap having an integral tongue, said tongue having an arcuate portion bulging away from the axis of thecap, and a wire member bearing in said arcuate tongue portion, one end of said wire being clamped to the end of the tongue, the extremity of the other end of said wire bearing on the top of the cap and constituting the fulcrum for said wire when a pull is exerted on the tongue.
The combination of a bottle cap having air integral tongue, said' tongue having an arcuate portion in the middle thereof adapted to bulge away from the axis of the cap, said tongue having alining openings in the arcuate portion adjacent-the straight portion of the tongue, and a wire passing through said alining openings and having one end thereof clamped to the end of the tongue, the other end of the wire being hook-shaped, with the extremity bearing on the top of the cap, said extremity being adapted to form the fulcrum for said wire when a pull is exerted on the tongue.
4. The combination of a cap and an opener therefor, said cap being formed of a blank having a tongue, said tongue having a pair of'openings alining with the center of the blank, the opener engaging the said openings of the blank and fulcrumed on the top of the cap.
5. The combination of a cap with an opener therefor, said cap being formed of a circular blank having an integral tongue, said tongue having a pair of openings alining with the center of the blank, said opener bearing in the openings of the tongue and engage the blank adjacent the .central part thereof after the same has been shaped into a ca 6. The combination of a bottle cap having a downwardly depending tongue, said tongue having a bulging portion in the middle thereof disposed transversely of the longitudinal axis of the tongue, and an opener for the cap disposed longitudinally of the tongue-and projecting through the bulging portion thereof, one end of said opener engaging the end of the tongue, the other end of the opener engaging the top of the cap, whereat the opener has its fulcrum.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATHAN ELLIS.
