HANDLE FOR CANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Application filed February 19, 1913. Serial No. 749,352.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL B. TAMAGNO, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Handle for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for carrying cans and comprises a novel form of swinging depressible handle adapted particularly for cans, such as those containing oil, alcohol, varnish, etc, and to be set in a depression formed in'the top of the can entirely within the outer surface thereof.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a plan view; Fig. 2, a section on the line A, B of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line C, D of Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a section showing a modification.
On the top 1 of a can is formed a relatively shallow imperforate depression 2, at one side of which is soldered a strip 3 having an upthrown circular bearing 4: that serves as a hinge bearing for thebail-like handle 5 consisting merely of a length of wire bent into the form of a parallelogram. Upon the free side of this parallelogram is loosely fitted a hand piece 6 composed of sheet tin bent into form. The particular form illustrated is one in which the hand piece is somewhat of convex formation on one side and somewhat concave on the other.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 8, the bearing strip 3 in which the wire handle swings is shown as a flat tin plate soldered to the bottom of the recess adjacent one wall: whereas in Fig. 4 the piece shown is a piece of sheet tin soldered to the side wall of the depression and to the bottom thereof. The circular bearing in which the wire handle swings in the latter figure is therefore in the corner of the depression. On the opposite side of the depression 2 adjacent the wall thereof and under the hand piece 6 is a small elongated concave depression 7. The hand piece is shown with its concave face uppermost. WVhen it is desired to raise the handle, the upturned edge of the hand piece affords a means by which it may readily be grasped and turned to elevated position as indicated in Fig. 2. If, however, the convex face of the handle piece be uppermost, pressure of the finger tips upon the edge thereof and into the shallow supplementary depression 7, around the curved bottom of which the fingers would travel causes the hand piece to turn and the fingers naturally pass under it with the hand in position and the convex face downwardly as in Fig. 2. The same thing is true when the concave face of the hand piece is uppermost, except then, if the hand is not shifted, the concave face of the hand piece will be next to the hand of the user.
I claim:
1. A can carrying means comprising an imperforate depression in the wall of the can, a rectangular handle having a hinge bearing at one side of the depression and a hand piece turning loosely on the other side of the handle, whereby the handle may be elevated from the bottom of the depression.
2. A can carrying means comprising a depression in the top of the can and a supplementary depression in the bottom thereof at one side, a rectangular handle having a hinge connection at one side of the supplementary recess and a swiveling hand piece turning upon the other side of the handle and overlying said supplementary depress1on.
3. A can carrying means comprising an imperforate depression in the top of the can, a rectangular handle, a bearing strip embracing one side of the handle and secured to one side of the depression whereby the handle may be swung in the depression, and aswiveling hand piece turning loosely on the other side of the handle and adapted to act on the bottom of the depression when turned on the handle to raise the handle out of the depression.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
DANIEL B. TAMAGNO.
