lINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. EOKMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
OPEN ENVELOPE OR WRAPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,298, dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed March 18, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. EGKMAN, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have made certain new and useful improvements in open envelopes or wrappers not heretofore known or used; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, and of the manner of making and using the same, reference being to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to construct an envelope or wrapper to be used as a circular, so that it may be readily spread open, while it will remain closed and compact until manipulated.
A more definite understanding of the construction will be had byareference to the drawings.
The envelope or wrapper is of any convenient size, of single sheet, as shown in Figure 3. This is folded at the points a a, so as to be divided into three parts, A,B,and O. The outer leaves, A and G, are folded so that one covers the other, the inner one, 0, being narrower than the central section, B. In this inner leaf or section, 0, is cut a slit, bfand the leaf or section A is cut so that a lip or tongue, 0, may be raised, as shown in Fig. 2. The slit 1) is cut at a point directly under the root or base of the lip 0 when the two sections Aand Olie flat one on the other.
The manner of closing the envelope is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the section 0 being pressed pers is more particularly adapted for the purpose of containing an advertising-circular, which can be printed directly on the entire surface, if desired, and any material of sufficient consistency and elasticity may be used to cut the envelope out of, from writing-paper to heavy card-board, or other like substance. Even tin or other metal may be used if of proper thickness.
What I claim as new is- As a new article of manufacture, an open envelope or wrapper consisting of three sections, A, B, and O, the inner section or leaf, 0, being narrower than the central one, and provided with a slot, b, and the other outer leaf, A, having a tongue, 0, adapted to slide therein, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
WM. L. ECKMAN.
