Be it known that l, ROBERT J. HAGERTY, a citizen of the United States, residingat the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Nursing Bottles, of which the .following is a specification.

The leading object of the` present invenw tion may be said to reside in the provision of a novel form of nursingbottle in which the neck thereof is providedwith a closure for and cooperatin with the nip le of the bottle for positive y preventing eakage of the bottle contents.

A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of means for hermetically sealing thel bottle contents thereby maintaining the same free from the attack of germs and other exterior matter,

iies, insects and the like.

A still further object is to provide a novel form of nursingbottle which may be positioned upon its base, in a vertical position,

yet is provided with means for temporarily retaining the nipple closure when the bottle is being filled or Votherwise used.

Other and further objects relate to the provision of eneral arrangements, connections and cominations of parts for attaining the results set forth in the foregoing objects.

The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying au drawings forming part hereof, and in which:

Fig. 1, is a view in elevation, partly in section, of a nursing bottle embodying features of the invention and illustrating the nipple closure in normal position.

Fig. 2, is a similar view illustrating the nipple closure in temporary position, and

Fig. 3, is a view of the underside of the nursing bottle.

For the purpose of illustrating my 1nventi'on, l have shown in the accompanying drawings oneJ form thereof whichv is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my finvention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangementand organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

In the drawings 10 designates a nursing bottle, formed of glass, the neck of which is provided with an annular `bead 11 adapted to be fitted over which is the lower end of a conventional nipple 12 of elastic material as rubber. At the time of manufacture of bottle 10, l form integral with the neck thereof a relatively coarse, exterior screwthreaded portion 13. The outer dimension of the screw-threaded portion is in excess of that of the bead 11 so that a nipple closure, cover or protector may be caused to co-operatively engage with the screw-threads of the bottle neck. In practice the nipple closure is also preferably made of glass and comprises an imperforate dome-like top 14 terminating in a depending portion or skirt 15 interiorly screw-threaded as at 16. At the juncture of the top and skirt there is formed interiorly a shoulder 17 for impinging against that part of the nipple which overlies bead 11. Thus when the nipple closure is screwed to place the nursing bottle is hermetically sealed so that the bottle contents cannot leak therefrom, and germs, dust, dirt, ies, insects and the like are prevented from attacking the bottle contents. Since the nipple closure is made of glass it may be sterilized along with the bottle so that the entire outfit may be maintained in 'ai sanitary condition. immediately below the screw-threaded portion of the bottle neck l prefer to form an voutstanding, annular portion 18 of a diameter slightly in excess of the bottle neck but smaller than the diameter of skirt 15. In order that the bottle may stand in upright position Without tilting, it is necessary that the bottle be provided with supporting means. In the drawings I have shown inte al with the bottle a pair of lugs 21 dispose opposite to one another. By this construction, the above described bottle bottom mafy be more readily molded than if instead o u s an annular rim or skirt portion was provi ed for the bottle to rest upon.

It .will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and vwhile I have inthe present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been. found in practice to give satisfactor and reliable 'results',`it is to be understoo that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing. from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advanta s. hat I claim is: 4

In an article of the character stated a bottle the bottom of which is permanently closed and is provided with an annular, depending extension formed with an external screw-thread to receive a nipple closure Vwhen not in use and means depending from said bottle bottom upon which the 'bottle may stand when such nipple closure is in use.

3. A construction as described in claim 1, characterized by means carried by the bottle bottom to receive said nipple closure when not in use said bottle bottom being permanently closed and being further provided with means upon which the bottle may stand i when said nipple closure is in use.

In an article of the character stated a .bottle the mouth of which is provided with a bead to receive a nipple, a nipple `the skirt of which is expanded over said bead, and a closure of rigid material consisting of an imperforate dome `for inclosing the nipple and a skirt for inclosing the mouth part of the bottle, the juncture of-said dome and skirtforming an annular, internal shoulder for seating upon that ortion of the nipple expanded over said ad, means being present for drawingr said skirt toward the bottle to increase the impinging relation of said parte.
