UNITED STATE JOSEPH MAY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN MGPHEE, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
NURSING BOTTLE.
Application filed March 31; 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH MAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursing Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nursing bottles and more particularly to fastening means for nipples therefor.
The invention is particularly related to the so-called hygeia nursing bottles which as well known, for sanitary purposes, consists in a container cylindrical in shape and having no neck or head formed therewith as the usual nursing bottle has. The nipple employed for a bottle of this character is of relatively large size and its open end is adapted to be fitted about the upper or open end of the bottle or container. In the use of a nursing bottle and nipple of this arrangement, it has been found that the nipple will frequently leave the bottle and cause a great deal of inconvenience and annoyance.
The purpose and object of the present invention is to provide a fastening means for nipples whereby every possibility of the same leaving or becoming detached from a nursing bottle is eliminated.
The invention is illustrated by Way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a nursing bottle having a nipple applied in the manner conforming to the present invention, and the nipple and a portion of the nursing bottle being shown in section in order to clearly illustrate the application of the in vention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of a nipple with a portion broken away to illustrate the construction of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the resilient band employed for securing or tas tening the nipple upon a bottle.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, B indicates generally a nursing bottle and N a nipple. The nursing bottle is cylindrical in shape its entire length or height, and its upper end is open and terminating in an enlargement to form an exterior head 10. The nipple N consists in a l ody portion ll which is of the usual for- Serial No. 548,342.
mation and having formed therewith a teat 12 of common formation.
Ordinarily the construction and appearance of a nipple of this type corresponds to the portion of nipple N existing above bottle B in Figure l, and in carrying out the present invention, I provide this nipple with an extension 13 which terminates in an exterior bead 14:. Also I provide an annular ring 15 upon the interior of the nipple at the point where the extension 13 begins. In applying a nipple to the bottle as shown in Figure 1,, the bead 10 on'the bottle B will abut the ring 15 of the nipple and co-operate there with to hold the nipple against downward movement upon the bottle B. Also the bead 10 of the bottle will bulge the surrounding portion of the nipple and form a bead 1G, and in order to hold the nipple against displacement from the bottle I provide the band B which is of such a width that it may fit between the formed bead l6 and the bead 1d of the nipple. The band B is slit as at 17 so that the same may be easily removed and applied, and is also preferably made of bronze or the like so that the same may have a certain resiliency and also that it will not be subject to rust.
It is believed from the foregoing that it will be apparent that the band B will hold the nipple upon the bottle B in a highly eflicient manner, and that the same is easily applied and can "be manufactured at a low cost. Also the necessary extension and changes of the nipple are slight and can he made at a small cost.
I claim :v
In combination, a nursing bottle having its mouth terminating with an exterior head, a nipple having a rib formed upon the interior periphery thereof adjacent its open end which is adapted to abut the head on the bottle when said nipple is positioned upon the bottle, a bead formed about the outer periphery of the nipple at its open end, and a split resilient band adapted to be positioned upon the portion of the nippleein circling-the bottle. said band being substantially equal in width to the distance existing between the bead upon the bottle and the exterior bead upon the nipple whereby the nipple is brought to tightlv fit about the bead upon the bottle.
