UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. WORLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NURSING-BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,986, dated December-21,1897. Application filed February 12,1897.v Serial No. 623,069. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. M. Won- LEY, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Nursing-Bottle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
vThis invention relates to infants nursingbottles, and has for its object a nursing-bottle on which the rubber nipple may be held without danger of its coming off and allowing the contents of the bottle to escape.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide such a bottle of very few parts, which can be cheaply made and in whichthe nipple is securely held directly on the bottle-neck by a device which engages only its outer surface, so that no metal or any other substance liable to make the milk sour will comein contact with the milk.
The construction and arrangement of the parts will be first described, and then particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bottle proper formed 1n accordance with thy invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a cap employed to secure the rubber nipple upon the bottle-neck shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same, and Fig. 4: is a partial section and partial elevation showing the nipple secured in place.
The nursing-bottle 1 may be of any desired form as to its body portion. Its neck 2, however, is provided near its upper end with an external screw-thread 3, which terminates at a point some distance below the upper edge of said neck, an outwardly-projected annular bead 5 at .such edge, and a reduced portion 4, joining said bead with the threaded portion.
The fastening-cap, which may be made of metal, hard rubber, or the like, has a threaded portion 6, adapted to engage the screwthread 3 of the bottle-neck, and above the threaded portion 6 the cap is enlarged, as at 7, so as to form a space or chamber between it and that portion of the bottle-neck (the bead 5 and reduced portion 4) which it incloses. In the top 8 of the cap is formed a central opening whose diameter'is less than the diameter of the bead 5, fora purpose now to be explained.
The nipple 9 (shown in Fig. 4) is first applied to the bottle-neck, with its lower open end expanded over the bead 5 and drawn down until it is stopped by the screw-thread to cover the reduced portion at, to which it will closely adhere, owing to the elasticity of the rubber. The cap is then inserted over the nipple, as shown in Fig. 4:, and is screwed down on the thread 3 until its top engages the lower end of the nipple 9 and presses the rubber against the top of the bead. The chamber formed by the enlarged portion 7 of the capallows for the expansion of the rubber below the cap, so it is possible for the cap to be screwed down very tightly upon the nipple.
-By the constructionabove described it is evident that it is practically impossible to accidentally remove the nipple-from the bottle.
' As cases have been known in which the nipple has become separated from the bottle while the nipple was in the childs mouth and drawn into the windpipe, causing choking, the usefulness of my improved bottle is apparent.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the here- ,-in-described nursing-bottle, having its neck formed with a screw-thread terminating at a point below its upper edge, and an annular bead at such edge, and by which a reduced portion is formed between said bead and thread, and a cap having a portion formed with a thread arranged to engage the thread of the neck, an enlarged portion thereabove of greater diameter than its threaded portion, and a top which extends directly over said bead and which has a central opening of less diameter than the said bead, whereby said top may press directly down upon a nipple expanded over said bead, the enlarged portion of said cap allowing of free expansion of the nipple below the pressed part of the same, as and-for the purpose set forth.
