Description

(No Model.)
H. MEIER.
NURSING BOTTLE AND NIPPLE.
No. 590,708. Patented Sept. 28,1897.
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MEIER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NURSING BOTTLE AND NIPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,708, dated September 28, 1897.
Application filed June 27,1896. Serial No. 597,1l2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county and Stateof New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement Relating to Nursing Bottles and Nipples,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the same.
IIeretofore the great difficulty in regard to nursing bottles and nipples has been that the nipple on account of the weight of the milk in the bottle would detach itself therefrom, thereby allowing the milk to be spilled. To overcome this difliculty and to produce a well-secured nipple are the objects of this invention.
Referring to the drawing, the same represents a vertical central section of my invention.
To particularly describe my invention, I take the ordinary nursing-bottle provided with a thread a. c is a cap threaded to conform with the thread on the bottle. The nipple g has two flanges h and i with an intervening groove between these flanges. The nipple is first applied to the cap, so that its lower flange h will be within and its-upper flange i above said cap. The cap is then screwed down, so as to compress the flange 71. against the mouth of the bottle The flange h makesthe secure joint, while the flange z'prevents milk from flowing into and contaminating the joint between the cap and the nipple. It also serves to prevent the nipple from slipping through the cap when the same is detached from the bottle, 7 g
It is hardly necessary to mention the ad vantages of this invention, but it will be seen that an air-tight joint will be formed between the bottle and the nipple and that it will be impossible for the nipple to slip or removeitself from the neck.
It will also be seen that the nipple and cap can be taken apart and cleaned.
For filling and cleaning the bottle the cap carrying the nipple is simply unfastened, rendering it needless to stretch and strain the nipple, as heretofore.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a closure for bottles and the like, the combination of a nipple having two flanges at its lower portion of self-expanding material such as rubber, a cap 0 entered into the space between the flanges of the nipple, the said cap 0 being of rigid material, all combined with a bottle-neck, and means for securing the said rigid cap upon the bottleneck so as to compress the lower self-expanding flange of the nipple between the bottleneck and the rigid cap. 2. In a closure for bottles and the like, the
' combination of a nipple having two flanges at its lower portion of self-expanding material such as rubber, a threaded cap a entered into 1 the space between the flanges of the nipple,
the said threaded cap 0 being of rigid material, all combined with a threaded bottleneck, the said thread on the bottle-neck being engaged by the thread on the rigid cap, whereby the rigid cap can be screwed down hard on the bottle-neck so as to compress the lowermost self-expanding flange between the top of the bottle-neck and the rigid cap.
3. A nipple for forming a bottle-closure comprising a nipple proper 9 provided with a plurality of flanges at its lower portion, the said flanges being of self-expanding material such as rubber and united by an intervening collapsible annular portion.
