.G. A. FRANCIS. PICTURE HANGING DEVICE. APPLICATION rum) DEO.2G,1907.
904.690. I Patented Nov. 24, 1908.
WITNESSES IN YEN TOR l1 TTOBNEIS UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. FRANCIS, OF WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RUFUS S. GREEN, OF WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
PICTURE-HANGING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1908.
Application filed December 26, 1907. Serial No. 408,139.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. FRANCIS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at estfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hanging Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hanging devices for pictures; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be conveniently used for the purpose of hanging pictures or hanging frames of any kind or class in a room, compartment or elsewhere.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of a section of a wall and showing my improved picture hanger and the method of its operation, part of the construction being in section, Fig. 2 a side view of the device as shown in Fig. 1, and; Fig. 3 a cross section of the device on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at A a part of a wall of a compartment or building, and at B a molding strip secured to the wall and from which pictures or other articles may be suspended; and in the practice of my invention 1 provide a suspending or hanging device of the following construction. I first provide two narrow metal strips a and b, and the strip a is provided at its upper end with a hook a the axis of which is at right angles to the plane of the strip and at its lower end with a keeper a through which the strip Z) is passed, and said strip a is also provided at regular intervals with oblong apertures a.
The strip 5 is provided at its upper end with a hook 5 adapted to be passed through the apertures a and at its lower end said strip Z) is provided with an oblong aperture Z2 through which is passed a yoke provided centrally of its bottom edge with a recess 0 and said yoke c is balanced in the lower end of the strip 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The yoke 0 is provided at its ends with hooks c forming deep recesses 0 which open inwardly and upwardly and detachably conneeted therewith are link members (Z, having oblong apertures (Z in their upper ends and provided in the lower ends with screw or pin holes 0 through which are passed screws or pins (Z adapted to be fastened in the ends or sides of a picture or other frame indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
All the parts of the hanger are preferably made of sheet metal, and said parts may be of any desired strength, and by means of my improvement I provide a hanger device for the purpose specified which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which frames of various kinds and classes may be quickly and easily suspended from the molding strip or other support.
It will be observed that the plane of the hook a of the upper end of the strip a is at right angles to the plane of said strip, and by means of this construction the nar-- rower edges of the strips (0 and Z) are pre sented to view when looking at the picture or other frame, instead of the flat sides thereof.
In the construction shown, the links (Z are of comparatively greater length, and when the proportions of the hanger are made as shown in Fig. 1 and the frame of the size indicated, the yoke 0 will be above the frame, but it will be understood, that the links (Z may be of any desired length, and in practice, the yoke 0 may be concealed behind the frame if desired.
By forming the hook a of the strip a so that the axis thereof is at right angles to the plane of said strip and connecting the strip Z) with the strip a in the manner shown and described, the narrower edges of said strips are presented to the front and the greater dimensions thereof do not show and the apertures a in the strip a are also concealed from view when the said parts are connected as shown in Fig. 1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A picture hanger comprising two strips of thin material placed side by side, one of said strips being provided at one end with a hook, the axis of which is at right angles to the plane of the strip and at the other end with a keeper, and said strip being also provided with apertures formed at intervals therein, the other strip being passed through said keeper and being provided at one end with a hook adapted to be passed through said apertures and at its other end with an oblong aperture, a yoke shaped support passed through said last named aperture and suspended centrally therefrom and balanced therein and provided at its opposite ends with hooks, and detachable link members adapted at one end to engage said hooks and provided at their opposite ends with apertures to receive pins or screws.
2. A picture hanger, comprising two strips of thin material placed side by side, one of said strips being provided at intervals with apertures and at one end With a hook and at the other end with a keeper, the other strip being passed through said keeper and rovided at one end with a hook adapted to be passed through said apertures and at the opposite end With an oblong aperture; a yoke-shaped support adapted to be passed through said oblong aperture and suspended centrally and balanced therein and provided at its opposite ends with hooks, and detachable link members adapted at one end to engage said hooks and provided at their opposite ends With apertures to receive pins or screws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 19th day of December 1907.
GEORGE A. FRANCIS.
