PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BERBECKER, or WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
ALBUM-EASEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 727,574, dated May 12, 1903. Application filed March 22, 1900. Serial No. 9,763. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS BERBECKER, of the city of WVaterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Album-Easels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in Which Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of an easel and album embodying my invention, the easel being shown in its folded position; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the easel-and album, the former being shown in its extended position or self-supporting position; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the same, taken on the line 8 3 of Fig. 2 in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 4, a detail sectional view on line at 4 of Fig. 3, showing the connection between the shelf and main support and with head of the stud removed.
In all figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.
This invention relates to easels for albums or other articles; and it consists in the various improvements and combinations set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Easels have heretofore been made of three or more partsa main support, a shelf, and a baok-hrace--aud easels of this class have been adapted to be folded.
The present invention has for-its object the production of a simple two-part easel in which the legs of the back-brace are formed integral with the shelf and which may be folded so that the combined shelf and backbrace will fit within the main support, thus producing an easel which when folded is no greater in length than the main support itself.
A further object is the productionv of a simple locking device for the two parts and effective means for hanging the album or other article on the easel.
Referring to the drawings, the part designated by the letter A represents the main support of the easel, which in this case is formed of asingle solid piece or rod of metal bent in the shape of an inverted U.
Bis the combined shelf and back-brace, also formed of a single U-shaped piece of metal.
The two parts A and B practically form the through the slots 1) and b ofthe back-brace.
The studs a are rectangular in cross-section or flattened on two sides, as shown in Fig. 4, so that when fitted in'the rectangular slots 1) the back-brace B is prevented from turning; but when the studs a are in the circular slots 1) the back-brace is free to turn in either direction, and the legs 12 of the back-brace may be folded into the main support A, Fig. 1. By these means the longer end of the combined back-brace and shelf may be folded into the main support, and the whole easel when so folded is of no greater length than the main support itself.
In order to hang the album or other article to the main support, a portion a of each of the metal uprights of the main support A is of greater diameter than the remainder. This may be accomplished in any suitable manner, such as upsetting .or swaging out of the metal on the rear a projection or offset, as shown in Fig. 2. A cross-bar O is secured to the album X by means of plates D, in which the ends of the cross-bar have bearings. The crossbar 0 is bent at 0, so that the part between the bends 0 may swing out a short distance from the album and may he slipped over the upper end and down the main support A until it meets the widened portions 0. which being of greater width than the distance between the central part of the cross-bar and the album thus prevent the album and cross-bar from slipping farther down on the main support.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A two-member folding easel, consisting of an arched main support, and a combined shelf and back-brace, said shelf and backbrace having on each side a narrow slot, terminating at one end in a circular perforation for the reception of a flattened pivot-pin on In witness whereof I have hereunto set my each leg of said main support, whereby said hand this 19th day of March, 1900. back-brace may be folded within said arched support, and the two members may be pre- JULIUS BERBEOKER' 5 vented from rotation by the engagement of Witnesses:
