UNITED STATES AT;ENT
JAMES ROY BAKER, OF OTTUll/HVA, IOW'A.
BOOK-SHELF SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,852, dated December 30, 1902. Application filed March 9, 1901. Renewed May 24, 1902. Serial No. 108,884. (No model.)
To all whout it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES ROY BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Book- Shelf Support, ofwhioh thefollowingisaspecification. g
This invention relates to improvements in book-shelf supports; and the object is to provide a simple and improved construction of adjustable support which may be readily adjusted and which when moved to the desired through said side of the bookcase, showing the slideway with the support therein; Fig. 3, a detail front view of one of the slideways, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of'the support removed from the slideway.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, A designates the side of a bookcase or other support for the shelf B, said side A having formed therein a lon gitudinally-extending grooveO for each of the supporting devices, of which there will be two for each end of the shelf. This groove is formed, preferably, dovetailed, so as to retain therein without fastening means a metallic slideway D of the same cross-sectional contour as the groove and formed in one of its edges with a vertically-arranged series of upwardly-facing shoulders E. The meeting edges of this slideway are not brought totogether, but are separated to form a longitudinally-extending groove, as clearly illus trated. Thus a slideway is formed having upon one edge thereof a vertically-arranged rack.
My improved support is formed ofasiugle piece of spring metal doubled to form two spring members F, which are adapted to move in the groove of the slideway, said members having upon their inner edges flanges G,
which move in the slideway when the support is adjusted. Each of the mem hers of the support is formed at its lower end with an outwardly-extending enlargement forming a finger portion H, at the upper end of which is a supporting portion I, upon which the shelf rests. These supporting portions are formed by bending the metal of which the enlargement is formed at right angles to the thumb portion, the supporting portions of said members being bent to extend in reverse directions, so that the flat faces of the thumb portions may be brought close together when the two members are approximated for the purpose of adjusting the support.
One of the members of the support is formed at its lower end with a laterally-bent portion J, which constitutes a spring member for engaging the shoulders or notches of the rack.
When it is desired to adjust the support, the members thereof are approximated, which disengages the spring member from the rack and permits the support to be moved downwardly, it being freely movable upwardly by reason of the inclined walls of the notches without approximating the members, excepting sufficiently to remove the pressure of the same from the edges of the groove of the slideway. It will be understood that four of these supporters will be provided, preferably, for each shelf, two at each end thereof.
While I have described the support in connection with a bookcase, it will be under stood that the same maybe used in other connections whereverit is desired to support a shelf and to provide the support with means for adjusting the positionof the shelf vertically.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A book-shelf support comprising two spring members having a normal tendency to separate and having outwardly-extending enlargements carrying at their upper ends shelfsupporting flanges and one of said enlargements having a spring-finger, and guideflanges at the rear of said spring members,
substantially as described.
2. A book-shelf support comprising a slideway formed with a rack, and a support comprising two spring members movable in said ICU and a support comprising two spring members having a tendency to normally separate and formed with flanges moving in said slideway and with outwardly-extending enlargements constituting finger portions and provided at the upper edges of said thumb portions with supporting-flanges, one of said members formed with a laterally-projecting spring portion engaging said rack, substantially as described.
