THEODORE E. CRECEIJIUS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO MULTIPLEX DISPLAY FIXTURE COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
DISPLAY-RACK.
Application filed. August 5, 1912.
7 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, THEODORE E. CRE- cnLrUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missourl, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks, of which the following a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates generally to display-racks and more particularly to certain new and useful improvements in displayshelves for the wings or leaves forming a part thereof and usable for exhibiting or displaying goods, wares, and articles of merchandise, the object of my present invention being to provide a wing or leaf of the kind stated with means especially adapted and designed for the purpose of conveniently and neatly supporting and displaying thereon articles of merchandise such as books, pamphlets, magazines, papers, stationery, and so on.
With this object in view, my invention resides in the provision particularly in connection with a wing or leaf of the kind stated of an article-supporting shelf and a complementing article-retaining member es pecially adapted and designed for supporting and displaying upon such wing or leaf articles of merchandise of the kind stated,
in the provision in connection particularly with a wing or leaf of the kind stated of an article-supporting shelf and a complement ing article-retaining member adjustable on said wing and relatively to each other, whereby articles of merchandise of the kind stated of varying sizes and shapes may be supported and displayed upon such wing; in the provision of simple means whereby said article-supporting shelf and its complementing article-retaining member may be releasably locked in adjusted positions on said wing and relatively to each other; and in the novel construction and combination of the several parts of my new article supporting shelf and its complementing article-retaining member and in the novel arrangement and combination of the same particularly with a wing or leaf of the kind stated, all as will hereinafter be descrlbed and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a display-rack or support- Speoifioation of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Serial No. 713,292.
ing standard showing (partly in dotted l1nes) a plurality of wings or leaves embodying my invention operatively mounted and arranged thereupon; Fig. 2 is an e11- larged detail sectional view taken on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front View of the parts shown in Fig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 3; Fig. 4 1s a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 4-4, Fig. 8; Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55, Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of the parts shown in Fig. 5 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 6; and Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 77, Fig. 6.
Referring to said drawings, the display Wing or leaf proper comprises a preferably rectangular metallic frame A. and a preferably fabric-covered panel of wood or other suitable material B suitably mounted and arranged therein. Frame A is made up of a pair of upright or vertically-disposed preferably hollow metallic rods or bars 1-1 of suitable size and diameter and horizontallydisposed or cross-members 22 of corresponding size and diameter rigidly united or held together in any suitable manner, preferably by electric welding, said upright members 11 being provided, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, with like series of preferably equidistantly spaced apart apertures or small openings 4, for purposes hereinafter appearing. As shown in Fig. l, the finished wings or leaves are preferably swingably or pivotally mounted in any suitable standard or rack S provided with alining upper and lower parallel members or bars S and S, respectively, so that both side faces or surfaces of the wing may be equally well used for display purposes, and accordingly, inner upright frame-member 1 is suitably provided at its opposite ends with pivot extensions or trunnions 8--3 adapted to pivotally engage, respectively, with said cross members S and S of rack or main frame S. Preferably pivot- 3 is somewhat longer than pivot 3, pivot 3 being adapted to rest or seat in a recess or the like provided in lower cross bar or member S of standard S and said pivot 23 being adapted to be inserted into and extend through a perforation in upper cross bar or member S of standard S, whereby the completed wing may be easily removed from, or placed into, operative position in said standard or main frame, as will be readily understood. It may be here stated, however, that, while I prefer, for the reason stated, to so swingably or pivotally mount display wings or leaves embodying my present invention, such wings or leaves may be otherwise or fixedly mounted, if desired.
Arranged upon and directly supported by frame A are my new article-supporting shelves and their complementing article-retaining members. Each of said shelves comprises a pair of similar brackets CC, an elongated plate or shelf member D adjustably resting upon and supported at its ends by said pair of brackets, and a pair of screws or the like E adapted to lock said plate in adjusted positions on said brackets and also releasably lock said brackets in fixed position upon said upright members 11 of frame A. Each of said brackets C is formed preferably from a comparatively narrow strip of suitable sheet metallic mate rial, the same being centrally bent to form an open loop 5. From this loop the main body portion of the said metallic strip is extended horizontally in the form of substantially or approximately parallel legs 66 somewhat spaced apart, and the free end portions 77 of said legs are bent away from each other into vertical alinement, thereby forming a back or rear portion. of the bracket which occupies a position at right angles to the horizontally-disposed legs 66 and which is adapted to rest or bear smoothly against an upright frame member 1, see Figs. 4 and 7. Formed on the ends of said portions 77 are short oppositely-disposed curved hooks S8 which are adapted to seat in a pair of said apertures 4: and engage with upright framemember 1 when the bracket is applied thereto, as shown particularly in Figs. 4 and 7. Passing freely or loosely through an aperture 6- formed in the upper one of said legs 6 and screw-seated in the lower one of said legs 6 is a screw E which is preferably provided at its upper end with a knurled or other suitable head, as shown. It will be understood, of course, that the brackets C are arranged in pairs, one on each upright member 1 of frame A, and arranged on a pair of brackets C are the ends of said plate D, which is preferably of sheet metal or analogous material and which is preferably bent upwardly at its'front edge to provide an article-retaining flange 9 and bent downwardly at its rear edge to form a stiffening or strengthening flange 10. Formed through the ends of this plate D are transverselydisposed slots 11, through which pass said screws E (see particularly Fig. 5), these slots 11 permitting plate D to be adjusted backwarclly and forwardly upon its supporting-brackets C relatively to frame A. Plate D being properly adjusted on said brackets C, screws E are tightened, whereupon it will be seen that not only will shelfmember or plate D be locked in such adjusted position, but simultaneously the bracket-legs 66 will be drawn toward each other and cause said hooks 88 to firmly engage frame-members 11, the brackets C being thereby releasably locked in fixed position on frame A. As shown particularly in Fig. 7 loop 5 projects preferably only to one side of lower leg 6, so as not to inter fere with the adjustment of plate D upon upper leg 6. Each of said complementingarticle-retaining members comprises a pair of said brackets C, a retaining rail or rod F, and a pair of locking screws E similar to said locking screws E and similarly engaging with said brackets. The retaining rail or rod F, which is preferably formed. of wire of suitable thickness or diameter, has its end portions 15 bent at right angles to its main body portion, and the ends of said portions 15 are bent outwardly, as at 16, as shown particularly in Fig. 2. These out-- wardly bent end portions 16 are preferably slightly enlarged in diameter and are seated or journaled in the loops 5 of the corresponding pair of brackets C. hen the screws E are tightened, it will again be seen that bracket-legs 66 will be drawn toward each other, whereby not only will the open loops 5 be contracted and the ends 16 of said retaining rod or rail F thereby clamped or held in adjusted or swung position, but also and at the same time hooks 88 caused to firmly engage with upright members l-1 and, as before described, releasably lock brackets C in fixed position on frame A. When assembled for use, it will be under stood that a pair of brackets C carrying a shelf or plate D are properly located or positioned upon frame A a suitable distance below a pair of brackets C carrying one of said retaining rods or rails F, the vertical distance being the two cooperating pairs or sets of brackets depending upon, and being gaged according to, the size or shape of the article or articles of merchandise to be displayed or exhibited. The
brackets C carrying the shelf D are now locked to frame-members 11 and plate D locked in its adjusted position on said brackets by tightening said screws E. Likewise the brackets C carrying the retaining rail or rod F are locked to frame members 11 and said rail or rod F locked in adjusted or swung position on said bracket-s by tightening the screws E. This rail or rod F may be locked while in a horizontally-disposed position, as shown by full lines in Fig. 4, or may be swung upwardly or downwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, to further accommodate the articles to be displayed,
and locked, after such movement, in such position, the books, magazines, papers, or goods to be displayed being positioned with their upper portions behind the retaining rail or rod F and with their lower ends or portions resting upon or being supported by plate D. It will be at once apparent that, when so positioned, said goods or merchandise will be conveniently and'compactly exhibited or displayed in a neat and attractive manner, the panel B of the wing or other backing preventing such articles falling backwardly or rearwardly through frame A. WVhen it is desired to change the relative positions of the pairs of brackets C on frame-members 1-1 to accommodate articles of different size, the brackets C may be readily detached by simply loosening screws E and E. When this is done, the resiliency of the metal of which the brackets C are formed causes the legs 66 to spread apart, thereby permitting said hooks 8-8 to be readily disengaged from apertures 4, after which said shelf and its complementing retaining rod may be again positioned upon frame A as may be desired.
It will be seen that the sets of brackets are readily adjustable on the frame, the retaining rails or rods and the shelf-plates readily adjusted in or on said brackets, and all of said parts easily and quickly assembled or taken apart, and likewise easily and cheaply manufactured.
While I have heretofore used my improved frame for exhibiting or displaying goods more especially for the purpose of sale, yet it will be plain that my improved frame may be advantageously and equally well employed as a receiving and holding stand or rack for pamphlets, catalogues, and the like in oflices, for books and magazines in libraries, and, in fact, for receiving, holding, and displaying comparatively small articles of various kinds.
It will be understood that my new shelves and complementing retaining members may be made in various sizes and arranged so as to receive and retain generally all classes of small articles to be displayed for exhibition or sale, and it will be further understood that, while my new shelves and retaining members are especially adapted and designed for use, and have herein been shown and described by me, in connection wlth a wing of the kind described, they may be equally well mounted upon a wall or other support arranged and adapted to receive the same.
I am aware that minor changes in the size, form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my inven tion may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a display-rack, the combination with a pair of spaced-apart upright members, of a pair of brackets detachably adjustable on said upright members, a removable shelf on said brackets for supporting the articles to be displayed, and means engaging said shelf and brackets adapted to releasably lock said shelf to said brackets and said brackets in adjusted position on said upright members; substantially as described.
2. In a display-rack, the combination with a pair of spaced-apart upright members, of a pair of brackets detachably adjustable on said upright members, a removable shelf on said brackets for supporting the articles to be displayed, and screws engaging said shelf and brackets adapted to simultaneously releasably lock said shelf to said brackets and said brackets in adjusted position on said upright members; substantially as described.
3. The combination with a frame, of a pair of brackets adjustably arranged on said frame, a shelf adjustably carried by said brackets, and means adapted to simultaneously lock said brackets in adjusted positions 011 said frame and said shelf in ad justed positions on said brackets; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a frame provided with like series of apertures, of a pair of brackets having resilient leg portions and hooks at the ends of said leg portions adapt ed to seat in apertures of said series and releasably engage with said frame, a shelf adjustably carried by said bracket-leg-portions, and means adapted to simultaneously releasably draw said leg portions together and thereby lock said hooks in fixed engagement with said frame and said shelf in adjusted position on said leg-portions; substantially as described.
5. The combination with a frame provided with like series of apertures, of a pair of brackets having resilient leg portions and hooks at the ends of said leg portions adapted to seat in apertures of said series and releasably engage with said frame, a shelf supported by said bracket leg-portions and provided at its ends with transversely-disposed slots, and screws passing through said slots and engaging with said bracket legportions, said screws being adapted to simultaneously releasably draw said leg portions together and thereby lock said hooks in fixed engagement with said frame and said shelf in adjusted position on said legportions; substantially as described.
6. The combination with an upright support provided with a plurality of apertures, of a metallic bracket made up from a single fiat metal strip and integrally comprising a separated pair of horizontally-dis posed article-supporting resilient flat leg portions connected together at one end and extending throughout their length normally parallel and spaced-apart and a pair of elongated oppositely-disposed extensions projecting from the other end of, and at right angles to, said leg portions adapted to bear flatwise throu 'hout their length upon said support, sai extensions at their outer ends being cut away inwardly, and bent to provide a pair of oppositelydisposed hooks adapted to fit in said apertures and thereby with said extensions detachably hold said bracket on said support, and a screw carried by and engaging said bracket leg portions adapted to resiliently draw said leg portions flatwise and said extensions endwise together and thereby releasably lock said hooks in said apertures and said bracket in detachable engagement with said support; substantially as described.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
