To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE E. CRE- CELIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVings or Panels for Display-Racks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a. front elevational view of a display-rack comprising a supporting standard and a plurality of hinged or swinging leaves or wings constructed in accordance with, and embodying, my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of a display wing or leaf of my improved construction; F ig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section showing in detail the construction of a portion of my improved display wing or leaf; and Fig. 4: is an elevat-ional View of a modified form of display rack comprising but a single leaf or panel embodying my invention.

This invention relates generally to certain new and useful improvements in displayracks and more particularly to certain new and useful improvements in wings, leaves, or panels utilized for holding and display ing picture post-cards, magazines, books, stationery, and the like, the objects of my invention being to provide and construct a display wing or panel of the kind stated embodying or comprising one or more series of pockets lnade up wholly from wire and light metallic rods, each pocket being adapted to hold and neatly and attractively display a number of cards, tickets, leaflets, magazines, or the like; to provide a display wing or panel of the kind stated which is simple, durable, and inexpensive in con struction and in which the essential parts are preferably united or held together without the use of rivets, solder, or like fastening means: to provide a display wing or panel of the kind stated which combines with compactness a comparatively large holding and display capacity; and to improve generally upon display racks and wings or panels of the kind described.

With these objects in view, my invention resides particularly in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new display wing or panel, all as will hereinafter be fully dea. scribed and afterward pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, A indicates the outer or main frame of the preferred form of my new wing or panel. This outer frame A is 'made up of or comprises upright or vertically-disposed preferably light weight hollow metallic rods or bars 1 and 1 and horizontally-disposed or cross members 22' likewise preferably light weight hollow metallic rods or bars united or held together in any suitable manner, preferably by weldlng. Inner upright frame member 1 is preferably integrally provided at its ends with pivot-extensions or trunnions 33, whereby said frame is adapted to be pivotally or swingably mounted in a suitable supporting standard or rack S provided with alining upper and lower parallel members or bars S and S, respectively. Preferably pivot 3 is somewhat longer than pivot 3, pivot 3 being adapted to rest in a recess or the like provided in said lower cross-bar or member S of said standard S and said pivot 3 being adapted to be inserted into and extend through a perforation in the upper cross-bar or member S of standard S, whereby said frame may be easily removed from operative position in said standard, as will be readily understood.

Fixed in any suitable manner, preferably by spot welding, to the under side of top cross member 2 and to the upper side of bottom cross member 2' of frame A and extending parallel therewith, are preferably pairs of wire rods 4. The rods of each of said pairs are preferably horizontally slightly spaced apart and disposed on opposite sides of the central plane of said frame, the rods of said pairs on the respective sides of said plane being in vertical alinement, so as to accommodate and support on each side of said frame A a plurality of verticallydisposed wire rods 5, the ends of which rods 5 being fixedly and rigidly secured to said horizontally-disposed rods 4 in any suitable manner,-preferably by spot welding. These vertically-disposed rods 5 are arranged in pairs or sets and are adapted to support the members forming the card display spaces or pockets, the rods 5 of each pair or set being spaced apart the proper distance to accommodate the pocket-forming or card-retaining members to be arranged and mounted thereupon. In each of said frames A, I

arrange preferably three sets or pairs of said rods 5, as shown particularly in Fig. 1, the rods of the two outer sets or pairs being preferably spaced apart a somewhat greater distance than the rods of the middle set or pair, so as to receive and support pocket-forming members of greater length than said middle part, the pockets formed on said outer pairs or sets of rods 5 being more especially adapted to receive and sn 3 port cards and the like with their longtr side horizontally-disposed and the pockets formed on said middle pair or set of rods 5 being more particularly adapted to support cards and the like with their longer side vertically disposed. As also shown in Fig. 1, there are three such sets or pairs of rods 5 on each side of frame A. It will be readily understood, however, that a greater or less, number of said sets or pairs of rods 5 may be arranged on each side of frame A, depending, of course, upon the size of the frame and the desired width of the finished card-holding pockets, and that, furthermore, the number of series of card-pockets on the opposite sides of a frame A may be unequal. I t is also to be understood that a frame A may be equipped or provided with cardspaces or pockets only on one side, if desired, and that the number of pockets in a series may vary, as required. Each card space or pocket. is form-ed of and comprises an upper card-retaining member or frame and a lower card-retaining member or frame, parts or portions of the latter member being a dapted to serve as, a support or rest for the lower ends of the cards or the like. The said upper card-retaining member is preferably formed of a single piece of wire and comprises a horizontally-disposed front central section 6, end sections 7 extending rearwardly from, and preferably at right angles to, said central section 6, and back sections 8, extending inwardly from end sections 7 and parallel with said front central section 6, the ends of said back sections 8 being suitably formed into. spring coils 9 which nor mally, for purposes hereinafter appearing, havean interior diameter slightly less than the diameter said rods The said lower card' retaining and supporting member is likewise preferably formed of single piece of wire and, comprises a horizontally-disposed front central section 10, end sections 11 extending re-arwardly from, and preferably at right angles to, said central section 10, and back sections 12 extending inwardly from end sections 1.1 and parallel with said front section 10. Parts of said. back sections 12 are suitably formed into spring coils 13 also, for purposes. hereinafter appearing,

Preferably coils 9 and 13 are oppositely wound, as shown, and from the lower strand of said coils 13, the end portions 14L of said piece of wire extend directly forwardly to slightly beyond, and in a horizontal plane somewhat below the horizontal plane of, said front section 10, and are adapted to form substantially what might be called a skeleton bottom for the pocket and thereby provide supports upon which the lower ends of the cards may rest. These upper and lower card-retaining members are arranged in pairs on said rods 5, and when properly positioned and adjusted on said rods 5, each pair of said rods 5 with its said pairs of vertically spaced apart card-retaining or pocketforming members provides a vertical series or row of card spaces or pockets adapted to conveniently hold and display post cards and the like, and the pockets being open and skeletm'i-like, as it might be said, there are no parts provided or presented to catch, or permit an accumulation of, dust and the like. Said card-retaining members may be made in various lengths and said rods 5 correspondingly spaced apart, so as to form or provide comparatively wide or narrow pockets or spaces as may be required for holding and displaying cards of various sizes. In assembling the said several parts, the said card-retaining members are first properly positioned relatively to each other and held in a suitable assembling table. Said rods 5 are. then forced through said coils 9 and 13 when, after the parts are properly adjusted, said coils, having, as stated, an interior diameter slightly less than the diameter of said rods, will firmly and resiliently engage and grip said rods and thereby independently hold said card-retaining members in proper fixed relative positions thereon, the use of rivets or other like fastening members for such purpose being thus done away with. The said rods 5 with their said pairs or sets of card-retaining members are then suitably aflixed to said cross-wires l, after which said wires .lwith their attached parts are mounted in said frame A.

In practice I prefer to make the end portions '7 of the upper card-retaining member somewhat longer than the corresponding end portions 1.1 of the lower card-retaining member, and thus front. sections 6 of said upper member occupies a position a greater distance away from said rods 5 than does the front section 10 of said lower member. Due to such relative positions of said front sections, the cards or the like, when placed. in the spaces or pockets, will occupy outwardly inclined positions relatively to the vertical plane occupied by the rods 5, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, and may hence be easily grasped for removal. At the-same time, byso doing I am enabled to provide a larger number of pockets on each pair of rods 5 than would be possible did said front sections occupy the same vertical plane, the upper portions of the cards in a lower pocket overlapping, so to speak, the lower portions of the cards in the pocket directly thereabove.

In Fig. 4: I have shown a slightly modified form of my new wing or panel. In this form, the outer frame A of the preferred form of my invention is dispensed with, one or more of said rows or series of card-holding pockets, with their supporting cross-wires t, as described, comprising or forming with a suitable rear leg or supporting member 15 an easel adapted to be arranged or mounted upon any suitable place of support for the display of the cards or the like placed in said pockets. A display Wing or panel of my improved construction is comparatively simple, can be easily and cheaply manufactured, is light, strong, and durable, is adapt ed to hold and display cards or the like in a neat, convenient, clean, and attractive manner, and, in pro-portion to its holding or carrying capacity, occupies comparatively little floor space.

It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my new display wing or panel may be made within the scope of the appended claims and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a display wing or panel of the class described, a skeleton card-display pocket comprising a pair of spaced apart upright parallel members, a pair of separate cardretaining members mounted upon, and horizontally disposed relatively to, said upright members, said card-retaining members being vertically spaced apart and retained in relative position upon said upright members independently of each other and each of said card-retaining members having a central front section extending transversely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from the plane of, said upright members, and members integral with the lower cardretaining member extending therebeneath for supporting the cards retained by said members; substantially as described.

In a display wing or panel of the class described, a skeleton card-display pocket comprising a pair of spaced apart verticallydisposed parallel rods and a pair of spaced apart horizontally disposed wire card-re taining members mounted upon and carried by said rods, each of said card-retaining members having a central front section extending transversely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from the plane of, said rods and the ends of the lower card-retaining member projecting beneath the front section thereof and thereby providing supports for the cards retained by said members; substantially as described.

3. In a display wing or panel of the class described, a skeleton card-display pocket comprising a pair of spaced apart verticallydisposed parallel rods and a pair of separate spaced apart horizontally-disposed card-retaining members each having a central front section extending transversely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from, and out of, the plane of, said rods and coils embracing said rods, said members being retained by said coils in relative position upon said rods independently of each other and the end portions of the lower card-retaining member projecting beneath the front section thereof and thereby providing supports for the cards retained by said members; substantially as described.

In a display wing or panel of the class described, a skeleton card-display pocket comprising a pair of spaced apart verticallydisposed parallel rods and a pair of separate spaced apart horizontally-disposed wire card-retaining members each having a central front section extending transversely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from, and out of, the plane of, said rods, end sections, back sections, and coils embracing said rods, said members being retained by said coils in relative position upon said rods independently of each other and the end portions of the lower card-re taining member projecting beneath the front section thereof and thereby providing supports for the cards retained by said members; substantially as described.

5. In a display wing or panel of the class described, a skeleton card-display pocket comprising a pair of spaced apart verticallydisposed parallel rods and a pair of separate spaced apart horizontally-disposed wire card-retaining members each having a central front section extending transversely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from, and out of, the plane of, said rods, end sections, back sections, and coils embracing said rods, the end sections of the upper card-retaining member having a length greater than the length of the end sections of the lower card-retaining member and the end portions of said lower card-retaining member projecting beneath the front section thereof and thereby providing supports for the cards retained by said members; substantially as described.

6. In a display wing or panel of the class described, the combination with a pair of vertically-disposed rods, of a horizontallydisp-osed wire card-retaining member provided adjacent its ends with spring coils adapted to embrace and resiliently grip said rods, the ends of said member being adapted to provide supports for the cards retained by said member; substantially as described.

7. In a display wing or panel of the class described the combination with a pair of vertically-disposod rods, of a horizontallydisposed wire card-retaining member provided adjacent its ends with spring coils adapted to emb "ace and resiliently grip said vertically-disposed rods, said member being bent to provide a frontdsection away from, and out of, the plane of said rods and the ends of said member being bent forwardly and adapted to provide supports for the cards retained by said member; substantially as described.

8. In a display wing or panel of the class described a frame, a pair of vertically-disposed spaced apart parallel rods mounted within and carried by said frame, and a plurality of pairs of separate horizontallydisposed wire card-retaining members mounted upon and carried by said rods, web of said card-retaining members having a central front section extending transvcrsely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from the plane of, said rods and the end portions of the lower card-retaining member of each of said pairs pro jecting beneath the front section thereof and thereby providing supports for the cards Copies of this patent retained by said pair of members; substantially as described.

9. In a display wing or panel of the class described a frame, a pair of vertically-disposed spaced apart parallel rods mounted within and carried by said frame, and a plurality of pairs of separate spaced apart horizontally-disposed card-retaining members each having a central front section extending transversely across the space between, and lying in a plane away from the plane of, said rods and coils embracing said rods, said members being retained by said coils in relative position upon said rods independently of each other and the end portions of the lower card-retaining member of each of said pairs projecting beneath the front section thereof and thereby providing supports for the cards retained by said pair of members; substantially as described.
