Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed March 6, 1907. Serial No. 360,823.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN GoETTEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Journal-Boxes and Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of journal box and lid therefor especially adapted for railway service, wherein the lid can be expeditiously and conveniently attached to the box by simply bending or forming the knuckles of the lid to the trunnions of the box, or vice versa.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a latch for the lids of journal boxes of the character described said latch being a gravity latch, simple and economic and applicable to any type of hinged lid.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of journal box wherein no parts are employed in its construction or the construction of the latch or hinge, capable of being jarred loose, such as nuts, bolts, pins and separable pintles.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

10 whereof at the top of the mouth A of the box is by preference u wardly curved, and at the upper portion of t e mouth A of the box, a cyllndrical surface A is rovided, extending from side to side, and from this cylindrlcal surface A trunnions 11 and 12 are extended. The mouth A of the box is closed by a lid B; the lid being preferably of the sha e and construction shown in Figs. 3, 4 an 5. This lid is cast from a malleable material, or a pliable material of any description and the said lid at each end of its upper edge is provided with a lug designated as 13 in the drawings. These lugs 13 have an outward and upward inclination, shown in Fig. 3, and each lug 13 at its inner face is provided with a socket 14 adapted to receive a trunnion 11 or 12 above referred to. The lid B is also provided with a depression 15 at its central portion and at each side of its lower portion the lid B is (provided with a bearing or knuckle 16, an these bearings are in two sections, namely an upper section a and a lower section a. These sections of the bearings are adapted to be brought together as shown in Fig. 4, being initially in the position shown in Fig. 3, and likewise Fig. 5. These bearings 16 are adapted to receive a latch device C, shown in Fig. 12. This latch device consists of a cylindrical enlarged central section 17, from which a handle 18 extends in an upward direction, and from the ends of the said enlargement 17, spindles 19 extend, which spindles are adapt ed to be received in the aforesaid bearings 16, and at the outer end of each spindle 19 a hook-shaped latch member 20 is secured.
- These hook-shaped latch members 20 are at an angle to the handle 18 and when the latch device is in osition extends rearwardly' along the side faces of the box A, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 6.
In Fig. 1 the latch members 20 are adapted for locking engagement with ovate projections 21 from the sides of the box, whereas in the construction shown in Fig. 6 the said latch members 20 are adapted to engage with pins 22 that extend from the outer side faces of the box, the pins 22 being the equivalents of the ovate projections 21. When the latch section C is in position on the lid B the han dle 18 is received in the recess 15 of the said lid when the lid is closed, and in the further construction of the said latch section C, a
projection 19 is carried down from the central enlarged portion 17 whereby to limit the downward throw of the said latch members 20.
In Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, I have illustrated a slight departure in the construction of the box, and its lid. In the latter construction the box is provided with a central enlargement 23 at the upper portion of'its mouth A, and with a s indle 24 extending from each end of said en argement, as is particularly shown in Fig. 8. The lid B is in this instance constructed of sheet metal, being stamped or otherwise appropriately formed. In Fig. 9 I have illustrated a blank of the said lid B wherein the said blank consists of a body portion having lugs or projections 25 extending in parallelism from one of its ends, one lug or projection at each side of the blank, and corresponding lugs or projections 26 are made to extend from the opposite end of the blank, while adjacent to and intermediate of the lugs 01' projections 26 a depression 27 is made corresponding to the depression 15 in the form of the lid shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
When the lid is constructed as is shown in Fig. 8, the lugs or projections 25 are bent over the pintles 24 shown in Fig. 8 so as to make a pivotal connection, and the lower lugs or projections 26 are bent to form bearings for the spindles or pintles 19 of the latch device C. When the lugs 01' projections 25 and 26 are shaped to form the aforesaid bearings they have a shape shown in Fig. 11, wherein loop bearings 25 are formed at the upper end of a lid and loop bearings 26 are produced at the lower end. of the lid.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the handle 18" for the latch section C slightly differs in form from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in that in Figs. 1 and 2 the handle 18 is of substantially L-shape, whereas in Figs. 6 and 7 the handle 18 is more or less straight and is provided with an aperture at its upper end into which a wire or similar device may be entered to facilitate the opening of the latch members 20. This construction of the lid is exceedingly simple and can be quickly adapted to a box; furthermore it is thoroughly practical and can be expeditiously and conveniently placed in position. It will be observed that I the latch employed is primarily a gravity latch, that is to say it closes by gravity, being manually opened.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A journal box, eon'iprising a box providcd with spindles, a lid having bearings at its upper and lower portions, and an approximately central recess, the upper b arings receiving the spindles of the box, and a latch mounted in the lower bearings of the lid'and provided with a handle adapted to enter the recess of the lid.
2. A journal box comprising a box provided with projections at its sides, a lid pivoted to the box and provided with a recess, and a latch pivoted. to the lower portion of the lid, said latch comprising hooks for engaging the projections of the box, and a member connecting the hooks, the said. connecting member being enlarged at its center and provided with a handle adapted to enter the recess of the lid and with a projection for limiting the downward swinging movement of the latch.
3. A lid for journal boxes constructed of malleable iron, said lid being provided at its upper edge with upwardly and outwardly inclined bearings adapted to be bent toward each other, and at its lower portion with spaced bearings, each formed of two sections adapted to be brought together.
4. A lid for journal boxes constructed of malleable iron, the said lid being provided with bearings at the end portions of its upper edge, the said bearings being inclined up wardly and outwardly and adapted to be bent toward each other.
5. A lid for journal boxes constructed of malleable iron, having upper and lower integral and shapable bearings.
