Description

T. W. BARNHIL-L.
. Spittoon.
No. 205,033. Patented June 18, I878.
TNESSES INVENTOR fig n ATTORN EY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. BARNHILL, OF PROVIDENCE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT lN SPITTOONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,033, dated J nne 18, 1878 application filed May 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BARNHILL, of Providence, in the county of Webster and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Spittoons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved spittoon, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
This invention has for its object to improve that class of spittoons especially adapted for use in railroad-cars, offices, and other places where the same may be sunk into the floor and conveniently emptied below.
The nature of the invention consists in a spittoon consisting of a funnel and a bowl, one part of the latter being secured to or forming a component part of the funnel, and the other hinged to the same and maintained in contact with the said fixed part by a key passing down through a slot in the funnel-rim, whereby the bowl will automatically open when the said key is removed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates my improved spittoon, consisting of a funnel, a, and a bowl. b. This bowl is designed to be passed through a hole of corresponding size in the floor, the rim 0 of the funnel resting thereon and permanently secured thereto by means of suitable screws. This bowl is connected to the funnel by means of a neck, d, and is composed of two sections, 0 e, the first of which is secured fixedly to the neck or is cast therewith and with the funnel.
The section 6 is hinged to the neck at f in such a manner that its center of gravity will be inside of said hinge, and that in its natural position it hangs with its edge free of the adjacent edge of the section 0.
Upon the bottom of the rim, above and in line with the hinge f, is an offset, g, through which and the said rim is made a slot, t', inclining inward toward the bowl. Through this slot is passed a key, h, the lower end of which bears forcibly against the side of the bowl-section e and jams it forcibly against the section 0, so as to form a tight joint therewith. When this key is drawn out the section 0 swings away from the section e and allows the contents of the bowl to drop out and facilitates the washing out of the same.
The contiguous edges of sections may be flanged upon their edges, so that they will half into each other, and they may be forced apart, when the key is withdrawnfrom the slot i, by a suitable spring arranged bet-ween the neck and the upper edgeof the hinged section, or in any other suitable position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A spittoon composed of a funnel, a fixed bowl-section and a swinging bowl section hingedto the funnel, and having its center of gravity inside of the hinge, whereby the said hinged section swings away from the fixed section automatically, as set forth.
2. The combination, in a spittoon, of the funnel 0, having slot 2', the fixed bowl-section e, the swinging bowl-section e, having its center of gravity inside of its hinge, and a key extending through said slot, bearing against the section 0 and holding it closed in upon the section e, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. BARNHILL.
Witnesses: HENRY GIVENS,
J. H. BEARD.
