WILLIAM AOKIN `MOORE, OF IVASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
COMBINEDDOORPLATE, KNOCKER, AND LETTER-RECEIVER.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,&58, dated March 15, 1887.
5 ment in a Combined DoorPlat e, Knocker, and
Letter-Receiver, of which the following is a specification. l
My invention is a combined door-plate and letter-box; and it consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lis a sectionalyiew of my invention in place on a door, the latter being also shown inV section. Fig. 2 is a rear t5 perspective View of the improvement. Fig.
3 is a detail view of the main plate, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the nameplate.
The d oor A has a slit or opening, a, for the 2c passage of letters, papers, and the like, and
is provided above said opening with mort-ises l, to receive the inwardly-projected bosses b on the main plate B. This plate B has a letter-opening, C, which, when the plate B is to the door, registers with openinga therein. 'The bosses b have threaded sockets 2, and openings 3 are formed through the door from its inner side into the mortises 1 for the passage of bolts D, presently de 3o scribed. The main plate has an upward extension at 4, on vwhich may be east or other wise suit-ably exhibited the number or other designation ot' the particular house or room to which the improvement is applied. At its lower edge the main plate has a portion, E,
provided with an opening, e, for aheaded stud or screw, F, the head ot which receives the stroke of the name-plate in the use of such part as a kuocker and bears the wear and dam- 40 age of suehimpact. By this means the wearsnrface may be renewed at a slight cost and without any considerable trouble, and the main plate will be relieved of all wear.
Slots G are formed from the upper edge of the opening C, and such slots lead into enlarged mortises,`forming seats g for the pintles h of the hinge-connection between the main plate and the name-plate II. Thisplate H has the pintles formed on its upper edge,
vImplication filed December 15, 1856. Serial No. 221,596. (No model.)
and such pintles may be readily moved into and out of their seats in main plate when such vplate is removed from the door, but will be locked by the door in said seats when the mai u plate is attached to the door. I cast or otherwise exhibit on the namelplate the name of the occupant, or such other words, as For Rent, ForSale, &e., as maybe desirable, and one plate II may be removed byloosen` ing up the bolts which secure the main plate and'another attached. Thus when all doors are provided with my improvement a party removing from one houseinto another may take his name-plate with him, and a forrent7 plate may be attached to the vacant house.
At its lower edge the plate H has a thickeued portion, I, which serves several purposes. In the irst place it is a handle by which to manipulate the name-plate. It further serves to give weight to the moving edge of and to receive the wear in the use of such plate as a knocker.
The bolts D are passed through openings 3 and threaded into the bosses b, which latter are properly seated in the mortises I. I form theheads j of thesebolts with annular grooves 6, to receive the letter-bag K. This bag `is looped at 7c over the heads of the bolts, and is formed of suitable flexible material, so it will collapse when, empty. I provide it'with a weight-rod, 7, which, by gravity, serves to keep its mouth properly against the door. Letters dropped the bag, which, when filled, may be easily emptied.
Now it will be seen that'the parts are secured from theinner side ofthe door, and the main plate and name-plate cannotbe removed except by releasing the bolts from the inner side ofthe door.
A special advantage results from the bosses b, inasmuch as thereby I provide long and consequently strong bearings for the fastening-bolts without necessitating the use of an extra thick main plate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newis The improved device of the character dethrough slit a will pass into of which receives the blow of the knocker scribed, consisting ofthe main plate A, hnvpoints fitted to be threaded into bosses b and ing a letter-opening,` and provided with bosses their heads constructed to receive the letter- 1o b, and with a portion, E, having an opening, l bag, substantially as set forth.
e, which receives :t screw, the projecting head W-ILLIAM ACKIN MOORE and sustains the Wear resulting` from the said lVitnesses: stroke, the numeplute hinged to plate A and SOLON C. KEMON, having a portion, I, and the bolts having their CHAS. A. PETTIT.
