UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK HACHMAN N, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO Ail IERICAN RAILWAY APPLIANCE COMPANY, OF MIN- NEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
JOURNAL-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1907.
Application filed July 24, 1905. Serial No. 270,923.
To all 7.071.077 it 77110;! concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HAon- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal- Boxes, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My invention relates to improvements in journal boxes for railway cars, its object being particularly to provide improved means for holding the journal box lid in closing position.
To this end my invention consists of an arm having hinge support upon the ournal box and a lid supported from its center upon said arm, in connection with means for positively locking said lid and arm in closing position.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a top view of my improved journal box partly broken away on line v'v of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a section on line -1 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is an elevation of the front of the journal box and closing lid and Fig. 4 is a section on line .22 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings A represents a journal box constructed to receive the end of the axle 2. The box is provided with the ordinary opening in one end adapted to be closed by a lid 10. In the construction shown in the drawings the lid has central rotatable support 11 upon an arm 12, the arm 12 having hinge support 13 upon the top of the journal box, allowing it to swing at right angles with the face of the box. To hold the lid tightly closed I preferably form the front edge of the journal box with a circumferential rib 14 adapted to fit into a corresponding groove 15 in the lid. The lid is also shown provided with wedge-shaped tongues 16 arranged to fit under lips 17 carried by the outer edge of the journal box. The lid is provided with a handle 18 by which it may be turned upon its pivot into or out of looking position. In order to hold the lid in open position I provide a spring 19. The spring 19 is secured to the outer side of the arm and by being forced over the lug 20 carried by the top of the journal box, when the lid is open, will hold the lid in supported position.
It will be evident that the tongues and lips 16 and 17 constitute screw means by which the lid may be carried into closing position when the arm 19 is down-turned, said screw means being preferably, as shown, carried by the lid and journal box edge.
The journal box is shown provided with a suitable form of dust-guard, which, as it forms no part of the present application, is not specifically described.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, a journal box, comprising an inlet opening, a lid arranged to close said opening, an arm having hinge support upon said journal box and rotatably supporting said lid from the center thereof in connection with interlocking means between the box and lid for holding said lid in closed position.
2. In combination, a journal box provided with an inlet opening, a downwardly depending arm having hinge support upon said journal box above said'opening, a lid rotatably supported from its center upon the end of said arm in position to close said opening, in connection with cooperating wedge shaped tongues and lips carried by the adjacent edges of said journal box and lid for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK HACHMANN.
