Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Now, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car J ournal-Boxes, of which the following is'a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car journal boxes.
Among the objects of the invention are to so construct the lid or cover that it can be easily detached from or attached to the body of the journal box, to cast or otherwise form the hinge pintle integral with the lid or cover, and to maintain the lid or cover in its closed position with a spring tension by devices which are attached to the sides ofv with the lid or cover detached therefrom.-
Fig. 4 is a detached front face view of the lid or cover. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section on line (0 -01. Fig. 2, the lid or cover being in its normally closed position. Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary section on line aa Fig. 2, the lid or cover being in its open position. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view of the car ournal box to illustrate one of the spring cushions. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detached horizontal section through one of the top flanged caps.
In referring to the drawings in detail, like numerals designate like parts.
The body 1 of the car journal box is constructed in the well known conventional hollow form to receive the end of a car axle and is provided with the usual outer opening which is normally closed bya lid or cover. The box body is preferably cast of wroughtiron or other suitable metal, and two lugs 2 are cast integral with or fastened to the outer corners of the top thereof. The lugs 2 are provided with rearwardly extending.
horizontal slots 3 and constitute the hinge lugs to which the lid or cover is pivoted. In practice, the lugs 2 are preferably cast so as to extend vertically up and the upper portions thereof are then bent downward and backward to provide the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
A hollow socket member or'lug 4 is located on each side of the body 1 and in a slightly lower horizontal plane than the hmge lugs 2. A spiral spring 5 is placed in each socket member or lug 4 substantially as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. A hollow or flanged top member or cap 6 is loosely and slidably telescoped on each socket 4 and the inner portion of the cap is cut away sufficiently on its inner side to provide a vertical slot 7, as shown in Fig. 8, for the passage of the metal oining the socket lug 4 to the side of the body 1. a
A lid or cover is hinged tothe body 1 and is adapted to close the outer opening in said body. The preferred construction of the lid or cover is shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 1 especially Fig. 4, to which reference is to be had and it consists of a substantially fiat rectangular plate 8 and two longitudinally extending ribs 9 011 the outer surface of the plate 8, the outer portions of which project beyond the end of the plate and bend laterally to form offset extensions 10 which are considerably wider than the ribs 9 as shown in Figs. 1, 5 and 6. Transverse hinge pintles 11 extend out-wardly'at substantially right angles from the offset extensions 10 as shown in Fig. 4 and are adapted to slide and rock in the slots 3 of the hinge lugs 2, see Figs. 5 and 6.
Enlarged cams 12 are formed on the outer extremities of the hinge pintles 11, which, when the lid or cover is in place on the body of the box, contact with the top surface of the flanged cap 6 as shown more particularly in Figs. 5 and 6. Each cam 12 is provided with a projecting port-ion 13 having two flat surfaces 14 and 15 which are disposed at ap proximately right angles to each other, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and a raised portion 16 is formed at one side of the top surface of the cap 6 against the top of which the flat surface 14; of the projecting portion 13 of the cam presses when the lid or cover is in its closed position as shown in Fig. 5, thereby locking the lid or cover tightly in its closed position with a spring tension.
When the lid or cover is in its open or raised position the other flat surface 15 conoutward.

In this improved structure the lid or cover i can be completely detached from the body of the box by opening the lid from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 6 and then moving the lid horizontally back a suflicient distance to remove the hinge pintles 11 from the slots 3. The top caps 6 and spiral springs 5 can also be easily llfted off for repair or replacement when the lid or cover is detached.
The prlncipal advantages of th1s improvement reside in the extremely quick and convenient manner of detaching and attaching the lid or cover to the body, in the arrangement of spring cushions for locking the lid in its closed position on the sides of the body of the box, in the cams on the ends of the hinge pintles which bear against the spring cushions and in the provision of two shoulders at right angles to each other on each cam, one of said shoulders being adapted to engage a raised portion on the spring cushion and thereby frictionally lock the lid or cover in its closed position and the other of said shoulders being adapted to frictionally hold the lid or cover in its open position.
I claim In a device of the class described, a box body having hinge lugs, a lid or cover for said body having hinge pintles adapted to engage in said lugs and said hinge pintles having cam shaped outer end portions; each of said cam shaped outer end portions having two flat side surfaces extending at an angle to each other, and spring cushions adapted to press against the cam end portions and each consisting of a vertical socket member supported from the side of the box body, a spiral spring loosely supported in upright position in said socket member and a cap member loosely telescoping on the socket member; said cap member having a portion of its top surface raised above the surface of the remainder to provide a raised portion, and one of the flat surfaces of the cam end portion of one of the hinge pintles being adapted to contact with the top surface of said raised port-ion when the lid is in its closed position and the other fiat surface being adapted to contact with an unraised portion of the top surface of the cap member when the lid is in its open position.
