srno zrrcnrron formingpart of Letters Patent hid-423.795, datedmarch 1a, 1990.
Application filed April 19, 1888. SerlaJ-RmTiLISB- -(Ho model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, GEORGE W. Monn1s, a citizen of the United States,residing.atPittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Axle-Box Lids; and I do appertains to -make and use the same. My invention relates to lids for car-axle xes; and it-consists in the'iinproved construction'and arrangement or combination of bulge in its upper portion for thefrec play of ,a springwhioh servesto close said lid'andto keep it closed, and with a slot and a stop for seeming said spring, as will be hereinafter :o-In'lly disclpsec'l' in the description,drawings,
through the slot M of the'passage L, in which and claims. 5 v y The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a lid" for car-axle boxes in-which a. spring for closing said lid andfork'eep'ing it a; closed may be secured so as to bear against the shoulder of the axle-box at the inner side of said lid; s cond, to provide such a lid with a .slot and a stop for inserting-and securiugsaid 'spring from the outside of the. lid after the latter has been properly hinged in place, and,
third, to provide 'such' a lid with a bulge or, swell which may] fit over the shoulder of the axl -box andforma comparatively tight joint for excluding dust from the box;
- In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speiaificafiomand inwhichthe' same reference-letters indicate the same parts, Figur 1' represents a perspective View of a car-axle box provided with my improved lid; the-box andlid; Fig. 3, a view of the lid, showing itdetached from the box and with the spring removed; :and Fig. 4, a viewofthe inner face of the lid,- showing the spring in place. j. 4,5 In the drawings, the letter A- indicates the car-axle box, which is of use usual construction and formed with the shoulder orprojection B upon itsupper side, which said shoul-' der or proj ection is formed with a vertioal forward face 0, which is'slightly curved, and an upper horizontal face D,'also slightly curvedl.
, A longitudinal bore E for the hinge-boltor pintle F is formed in said shoulder or projection.
hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the' inven- Y tion,-such as will enable others skilled in the 10 art to which it parts of alid which is formed'with aswell'or -ti\ely tight joint with the .sh
The lid G covers theopening Hin the front of the box, and is formed witha swellor bulge I in the-flipper portion --and with transverse eyes J at the sides of said bulge and fitting and turning upon said pintle. Said bulg'e'or swell increases in height toward theupper edge of the'-lid,and has its upper inwardly-curved portiouK so curved as to fit comparatively s'nugupon the .upperrounded face D of the -'shouh'zler -B andfv to turn over the same when the lid is tilted; At the lower end of said jewel-l, where it 'merges intothe plane of the lid, is formed an 'outwardly-bulged passage or channel L, which opens through the lid bya transverse slot Mat its lower end, A slot or recess N is formed below said passage-and slotL andM.
The spring 0, which is fiat and formed with parallel sides, has, its upper end bearing] against the shoulder of the bolt and projects it fits, and the lower end of said spring is bent to form a lip P, which may fit into the recess N, which'thus forms a stop for said spring; 7 The lid is stamped out ofa plate of malleable metal, and the bulge is formed with sharply-defined and'str'aight sides at its high est portion, so that it may form a comparaoulder or projection. The lid is'first hinged in place by inserting the pintle-'through the eyes of said lid and through the shoulder of the box, and thespring is thereupon inserted through the slot M, and is guided-upward by the passage or channel-L, in which it fits, and when the upper end of said spring has reached the shoulder'the spring is driven upward until the lip engages the recess which forms the stop for the lower end of. thespring.- The spring will now serve to keep the lid closed and will close the lid whenever the latter, is raised, and said spring will also serve to'keep the lid open when the latter is tilted sufliciently up to cause the end of said spring to bear against the horizontal upper face of-said 'shoulden'which maybe desirable when the.
box is to be cleaned or refilled.
It "will be obvious that thespring will be protected from being clogged or'from injury by being placed upon the inner face of the lid, and the bulge or swell will admit of said spring -having free play.
It'willalso be obvious that the difliculty which would be connected with hinging the
