TO ALL WI'IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STONE, of Hollidaysburg, in the county of Blair, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement" in Grease-Box for the Axles of RailroadCars; and I (lo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical scc'tionotl my improved grease-box for railroadcar axles.
Figure 2, a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicato like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in railroad car-axle boxes, and consists in a sliding lid with lugs cast on the box, to prevent the lid from coming out, in connection with a projection cast on the inside of thc lid, for the same purpose, thereby doing away with screws or belts; and also a projection cast on the top of the box which thelid fits upon, to prevent dirtand dust from entering the box, forming a simple and convenient arrangement for opening and closing the box, as requiredL A represents the box, made of cast iron, and connected with the truck of a railroad-car, as a bearing for the axle, in the usual way. The front side of the box is made vsloping and partl'y'open, for introducing the tallow or lubricating material, with lugs a a on each side of the sloping part, forming grooves, in which is fitted a lid, B, to slide up and down, for opening and ,closing the box. 'lhe upper side of the lid has a hooked head, b, which catches on a sharp projection, c, cast on the top of the box on the front side or edge, by which the lid is supported, and which eiectually closes the upper side of the front opening to keep out the dust. n the under side of the lid is a small sharp-cornered projection or shoulder, e, facing upwards, which tapers oi` to nothing downwards, so that the lid can slide down in its place easily to close the opening in the front side of the box, but cannot slip or jar out upwards on account of the shoulder c that catches against the sharp edge of a projecting side, d, forming the upper part of the opening in the sloping front of the box.
The lid is thus heldin place over the opening by its own gravity, and, in order to allow `it to be removed easily, the grooves formed by the lugs a a are made wider at the upper part to allow the lid to be lifted enough to let the shoulder e clear the projecting side d, when it is drawn upwards to open the box for introducing grease into the box for lubrication.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sliding lid B, with the shoulder-proj e'ction e on the under side, and the hooked head b, in combination with the lugs a a on the sides, and the projection c on the top of the box A, with its sloping side d, arranged and operating' substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM STONE.
