in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Journal-Boxes, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to car'journal-.boxea and has for one of its objects toimprove the hinge connection between theV lid and the journal-box.
A further object is to provide an exceed` and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully dei scribed, particularly designated in the claims,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a ,side elevation of the outer or front portion of a journal-box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is-a vertical longitudinalsection of the same on the line w of Fig. 3 and showing in dotted lines the position of the lid when open. Fig. 3 is asection, partially in elevation, on the line y y of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the lid.
The journal-box 10 may be of the ordinary or any preferred construction except in the particulars'hereinafter specified and is prodescribed. The lid 15 is formed with a' hol-v low enlargement or pocket 16 at its upper edge, and the side walls of this pocket are provided with hinge lugs Or enlargements 17, having apertures 18, Vin which the hinge-pin 19 of the lid `is secured. The pin 19 is preferably in the formof a attened` pin or is substantially elliptical,` as shown-that is to say,
`as to turn freely therein.' Ihe pin is secured in the apertures 18 in the lid, so as' to beheld against movement independ ently-thereof, and
to Vthis end the apertures 18 may be elongated and of the same size and shape as-the pin, as
shown in Fig. 1. Thepoclret 16 is so disposed that it partially incloses the hinge-lug 12, and the latter is preferably provided with a transverse rearward shoulder 20 on its upper face, against which an inwardly-turned lip or ange 21 at therear edge of the pocket abuts when the lid is'in its closed position to secure a tight joint' and prevent the ingress of dust or dirt.'
Located on the side walls of the box are lugs 22, and these lugs are designed to-be engaged by hooks 23 on the lid 1 5. These lugs 22 and hooks 28 are preferably, but not necesvinwardly tightly against the box around the opening when the lid is closed.
The lid-spring 24 is designed to be so con` structed and retained as to be readily removed in case of weakening or breakage in order to insert-a newspring, and' to this end the lid 15 is provided with a recess or pocket 25 on its inner face, formed-witha shoulder 26-at the top of the saine and a liange or lip- 27 at its lower outer edge. v The spring 24 consists of .a preferably straight portion provided at its lower end with an angular portion which lits into the pocket. Specifically the spring is bent outwardlyv at its lower end, then downwardly, so that a shoulder is formedat 28', which engages the shoulder 26 of therecess,
while the end portion 29 extends downwardly into the recess and is retained therein by the flange 27. It will-be readily understood that when the lidisjremoved from the box by withbottom wall of the opening 14, as shown vin full lines in Fig. 2; but when the lid is in its opened position the transverse major axis of the pin is at about a right angle to the bottom wall of the opening, with the under edge or side of the pin resting against the said bottom wall.
The lid is opened by sliding it vertically, which operation is necessary in order to disengage the hooks 23 from the lugs 22 and is permitted by reason of the slot 14, in which the hinge-pin is located. The .lugs having been cleared by the hooks, the lid is pulled outwardly, turning the hinge-pin in the opening 14, and when the lid is opened to its fullest extent the pin assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, with its transverse major axis vertical and the shoulder 31, back of the beveled lend of the spring, engaging the shoulder 2O on the top of the hinge-lug. The spring in this positionthat is, when the lid is elevated-by bearing on the top of the hinge-lug serves to support the lid and hold it open and is assisted by the hinge-pin 19, the edge of which rests upon the bottom of the hinge-opening and supports the inner end of the lid.
When the lid is closed,the hinge-pin 19 turns in its opening, and the rear beveled faces of the hooks 23 engaging the upper inclined faces of the lugs 22 the lid is lifted far enough to permit the hooks to drop behind the lugs, and by reason of their inclined engaging faces securely wedge the lid against the box, and this wedge action is aided by the spring 24, the beveled end of which acts against the shoulder 13 and presses the lid downwardly. rlhe spring 24, owing to its beveled face, exerts a tendency to hold the lid from being lifted from its seat by jarring of the box.
The parts are fitted closely together, and the lid when closed is firmly seated on the box, so that all openings or crevices are closed and dust and dirt excluded. The lid may be provided with an inward depression 32, provided with depending and lateral fianges 33, which extend close to the bottom and side walls of the box, but do not come into Contact with the same. The object of this construction is to prevent the escape of oil between the lid and the wall of the box around the opening, inasmuch as any oil thrown against the lid will drip from the flange and not find its way past the same to the opening.
Having described my invention, I claimm 1. In a car journal-box, in combination, a
body having a hinge-pin opening, ahinge-pin elongated in cross-section and normally having its transverse major axis parallel with the bottom of the opening, and a lid fixed on the pin.
2. In a car journal-box, in combination, a body having a lug provided with a hinge-pin opening, a flattened hinge-pin normally having its transverse major axis parallel with the bottom of the opening, and a lid fixed on the pin.
3. In a ear journal-box, in combination, a body having a lug provided with a substantially square hinge -pin opening, a fiattened hinge -pin whose transverse major axis is substantially the size of the opening and normally parallel with the bottom of the said opening, and a lid fixed on the pin and adapted to be partially supported by the pin when the lid is open.
4. In a car journal-box, in combination, a body having a hinge-pin opening, ahinge-pin elongated in cross-section and adapted to slide vertically and turn freely in the opening, a lid fixed on the pin and having hooks, and lugs on the body engaged by the hooks.
5. In a car journal-box, in combination, a body having a substantially square hinge-pin opening, a vertically-sliding hinge-pin elongated in cross-section and whose transverse major axis is such as to permit the pin to turn freely in the opening, a lid fixed on the pin and having hooks, lugs on the body engaged by the hooks and a spring to assist in holding the lid in closed and open position.
6. In a car journal-box, in combination, a body having a hinge-lug provided with a suhstantially square hinge-opening, a hinge-pin elongated in cross-section and whose transverse major axis is substantially the dimensions of the opening, a lid fixed on the pin and having hooks, lugs on the body engaged by the hooks, and a spring attached to the lid engaging the lug.
7.' In a ear journal-box, in combination, a body having a hinge-pin opening, a lid provided with a hinge-pin elongated in cross-section, the said pin when the lid is closed having its transverse major axis substantially horizontal and adapted when the lid is in its open position to have one of its edges rest against the bottom of the opening.
8. In combination, a car journal-box having a-lug provided with an opening and a beveled shoulder, a hinge-pin, a lid fixed on the pin and having a recess on its inner face providing a horizontal shoulder, a vertical fiange at the outer edge of the bottom of the recess, and a detachable spring having one end inclined and engaging the beveled shoulder of the lug and its other end provided with an offset straight portion seated behind the flange and providing a horizontal shoulder engaging the shoulder of the recess.
