Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed April 27, 1908. Serial No. 429,500.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GRAY DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brantford, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ournal-Box Lids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in journal boxes and particularly to the construction of the lid, such as is used on car axle boxes.
The object of the invention is to provide means for pivotally connecting the lid with the box without the use of any separable elements such as pins, rivets, bolts or the like.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, figure 1 is a perspective view taken from the front of the car axle box equipped with this improved lid showing the lid in closed position, and with parts broken out; l ig. :2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof with the lid in open position; Fig. 3 is detail horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the sliding spring pressed member and the spring retainer detached from the bearing and arranged in juxtaposition.
In the embodiment illustrated, the car axle box 1 of any desired type is shown provided with the usual opening in its front end and with a seat 2 extending around the opening and on which the lid 3 is adapted to rest. A pair of bearings as 4 are suitably spaced apart and are preferably formed integrally with the box 1, said bearings being shown extended upwardly from opposite sides of the box and arranged with their bores extending longitutlii'ially of said box. These bearings 4 constitute barrels which are formed at the upper ends of plates as 5 having curved slots as 6 inclined downwardly toward the front of the box and adapted to receive studs as 7 which project laterally from opposite sides of the lid 3. These bearings 4 are provided at their oppositely disposed inner sides with longitudinally extending slots as 8 for a purpose to be described. An upwardly inclined lip 9 eX- tends transversely across the top of the opening in the box 1 and is designed to perform the double function of a rib to prevent liquid or other matter on the top of the box from entering through the opening and presents an extended surface for the upper edge of the lid 3 to bear against. The lid 3 is provided at its upper end with a flange 10 which extends approximately the entire length of the lid and is adapted to bear against the lip 9 of the box 1 at all times and form a liquid or dust proof closure between these parts. This lid is also provided at its 0pposite upper corners with cam shaped flanges as 11 which are adapted to be engaged by members hereinafter described, for locking the lid in either its open or closed position and they are adapted to bear against the inner faces of the plates 5 which prevents lateral movement of the lid in either direction. This lid 3 is provided on its inner face with a rib 12 shaped to fit the opening in the box 1 and adapted to extend within said opening and closely lit the side walls thereof to form a tight closure.
Arranged within the bearings 4 are tubular members as 13 open at one end and closed at the other to receive the coil spring as 14. These members 13 are each provided with a laterally extending cam sha aed lug as 15 which extends through the slot as 8 in the side of the bearing 4 and is adapted to engage the cam flange 11 of the lid for locking the lid in either of its extreme positions. The stems of the cam shaped lugs 15 of the members 13 are preferably made angular to fit the opposite walls of the slots as 8 to form guides for the members 13 and prevent them from turning in the barrels or bearings 4. Spring retaining members as 16 are adapted to be inserted in the open rear ends of the barrels 4 and are provided with oppositely disposed recesses as 17 adapted to engage V or wedge shaed ribs as 18 arranged on the inner faces 0' the barrels 4 at the rear ends thereof.
To apply the lid 3 to the box 1 the tubular members 13 are placed in the bearings 4 with the cam lugs 15 thereof projecting outwardly between the walls of the slots 8 and said members are ushed back into the barrels 4 as far as the s ots will permit. The tubular'members 13 are then pressed forward until the cam lugs 15 come in contact with the flanges 11 on the lid 3 and the springs 14 are passed through the rear end of the barrel 4 into said tubular members 18 and the retaining devices 16 are inserted in the openings at the rear of the barrels 4 and are given a quarter turn to cause the recesses 17 therein to engage the V-shaped ribs 18 formed on the inside'ofthe It will be readily understood that this operation reversed will serve to quickly and readily detach the lid from the box when desired to do so.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a journal box the combination of two spaced upwardly extending plates having forwardly inclined slots therein, a longitudinally extending barrel carried by one of said plates above said slots, a lid having studs for engagement with said inclined slots in said plates and spring pressed means operable in said barrel and adapted to engage said lid to lock it in either of its extreme positions.
2. In a journal box the combination of two spaced upwardly extending plates having inined slots therein and provided at their upper ends with longitudinally extending barrels having slots formed at the inner sides thereof, a lid having laterally extending studs adapted to engage the inclined slots in said plates and spring pressed cam lugs operable within said slots and projected in position to engage said lid to lock it in either of its extreme positions.
3. The combination of a journal box having an opening therein, spaced upwardly extending plates or brackets having curved slots formed therein and provided at theirupper ends with longitudinally extending barrels, said barrels having slots extending longitudinally from the front ends thereof to a point near the rear, a lid having laterally extending studs for engagement with the inclined curved slots in said plates or brackets and provided at the upper ends of its opposite sides with cam flanges, spring pressed members movable in said barrels and having laterally extending cam lugs projecting through the slots in said barrels and adapted to engage the cam flanges of said lid for lock ing it in open or closed position.
4. The cornbiiiation of a journal box having an opening therein, spaced upwardly extending plates or brackets having curved slots formed therein and provided at their upper ends with longitudinally extending barrels, said barrels having slots extending longitudinally from the front ends thereof to a point near the rear, a lid having laterally extending studs for engagement with the inclined curved slots in said plates or brackets and provided at the upper ends of its opposite sides with cam flanges, spring pressed members movable in said barrels, and having laterally extending cam lugs projecting through the slots in said barrels and adapted to'engage the cam flanges of said lid for looking it in open or closed position, and co-acting means carried by said box and said lid for forming a dust proof closure at its upper end.
