ALFRED L. STREETER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO VICTOR RAILWAY SUP- IELY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.-
JOURNAL-BOX.
Application filed August 26, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. S'rnnnrnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal-Boxes, of whichthe following is a specification.
My present invention relates to journal boxes generally, and more particularly to railway car journal boxes having a lid mounted thereupon, and has special reference to the provision of an improved form of cooperating box and lid wherein the lid is hinged to the box.
The principal objects of my present in vention are to provide a form of construction wherein a dust tight joint may be attained between the box and lid when the lid is in closed position, to provide means for maintaining such tight joint, to provide inr proved latching means for holding the lid in closed position against accidental or undesired opening in service, and to provide an improved form of latch construction for such purpose, together with such other and additional objects as may hereinafter appear.
gaining certain advantages to be below pointed out, I have prov ded the construct1on lllustrated 1n the accompanying draw ing, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of av journal box embodying my improvements in preferred form; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1.
Referring first more particularly to Fig. 1, it will be noted that for convenience in illustration I have shown my improvements applied to a car journal box of the standard Master Car Builders type, indicated at 10, provided as here shown with a lug, 11, to which the lid, 12, is hinged by means of bolt, 13, passing through said lug, 11, and projecting portions, 14, 1 1, of said lid, 12, as is clearly to be seen on viewing Fig. 3. The lug, 11, is provided with cam surfaces, 15 and 16, against which a spring, .17, carried by the lid, is adapted to bear and thereby hold the lid 12 in open or closed position. As will be apparent on inspection of Fig. 1, for the purpose of adding to the resiliency of the spring, 17, and shortening the dis- Specification of Letters Patent.
In attaining the foregoing objects and in Patented May 16, 1916.

tance between its fulcrum and power applymg points, I preferably give it substantially the bow formshown so that it makes contact with the lid adjacent the part indicated at 17 For the purpose of providing a dust tight joint between the margins of the open end of the box through which oil and waste are introduced into the box, and the lid, I provide on the margins of both the lid and the box more particularly the lower margins (see Fig. l) but preferably also on the sides (see Fig. 2) and on the top, when the opening is made substantially rectangular, cooperating contacting surfaces 18, 19, and 20, 21, lying in different planes. Between the contacting surfaces 18-19, and 2021, I arrange on the lid and box cooperating con tacting surfaces 22, 23, and at the outermost margin of the opening, contacting surfaces 24:, 25 on said lid and box, both of the pairs of surfaces 22, 23 and 241, 25 being arranged at an angle to the pairs of surfaces, 18, 19 and 20, 21. The pivot point of the hinge is as indicated at 13, located behind the planes in which the surfaces 1819, and 20-21 lie, and below the center of the lug, 11, the pairs of surfaces 2223 and 21 25 are preferably disposed in intersecting planes. By the employment of the doubly beveled surfaces, 18-19, 2021 and 2223, or 20-21, 2223 and 24l25, and the offcenter disposition of the hinge 13, just described, I attain as well a doubly broken joint and the most intimate contact between the lid 12 and box 10, and the lid portion 141 and the lug 11, and by the employment of all four of the pairs of surfaces just referred to a trebly broken joint rendering the entrance of foreign matter into the box even more unlikely. In further aid of the formation of a dust-tight joint between the lid and body when the box is closed, I preferably form on the lid 12 an apron having a beveled surface as indicated at 25, giving the inner surface of the box 10 a correspondingly beveled surface indicated at 26.
For a twofold purpose, first: to close the lid upon the box and hold it in closed position at all times under service conditions,
and, secondly: in order to gain the greatest benefit from the beveled joint formed by the surfaces 2223, or 24-25, or both, I employ to fix the lid in the closed position shown, to force it into tighter contact with the box than is possible by the em-- ployment of the spring 17 alone, a latch, 26, carried in ears, 27, 27, formed on the lid, 12. The latch 26 is sustained in operative relation relatively to the margin of the box opening, by means of a pin 28, and for forcing the latch downward and against the curved box surface 30 and thereby cause the surfaces 18, 20 and 24, constantly to press upon the surfaces 19, 21, 23 and 25, maintaining the tightness of the joint, I mount on the latch 26 and between the car 27 and the pin 28, a spring 29.
In order that when it is found desirable to remove the latch 26 from the ears 27, 27,
either for replacement thereof or of the spring 29, this may be done with facility and without the use of special tools, I cut away the bearing provided for the latch in the ear 27 as indicated at 81, 32, which construction permits of the latch 26 being lifted until it is disengaged from the ear 27 and then tilted for removal care being used to provide bearing surfaces as indicated at 33 and 3% in order to prevent tilting of the latch and consequent release of the pressure of the lid 12 upon the box 10 in service. For further facilitating the removal of the latch, the bearing of the latch 26 in the ear 27 may be given the ovoid form indicated at 35 in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a journal box having an opening, and a lid for closing said opening, said box and lid having inter-engaging cooperating dust-excluding faces, and cooperating beveled engaging surfaces, said 1nter-engaging faces being disposed out of the plane of the wall of sald opening.
2. In combination, a journal box having an opening, and a lid for closing said opening, said box and lid having inter-engaging cooperating dust-excluding faces disposed entirely outside of the plane of the Walls of the opening at opposite sides thereof, whereby collection of dirt, etc., is prevented and proper seating of the lid is insured.
3. In combination, a journal box having an opening, and a lid for closing said opening, said box having lid-seating faces spaced from and out of the plane of said opening, said lid having faces complementary to and cooperating with said lid-seating faces to form a dust joint therebetween, said opposing contacting faces being depressed with respect to the plane of the entrance of the opening, said lid also having an interiorly tapered flanged margin and a tapered apron adapted to cooperate with the interior of a wall of the opening to provide wedging of the lid on to the box when the lid is moved into closed position over said opening.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
ALFRED L. STREETER.
