To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LAOEY Y. WILLIAMS and FRANK B. The location of the several parts and elements when both the lids are closed is clearly shown by Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The bolt 30 passes through the slots in the side flanges of the outer lid, the holes in the cam lugs at the top edge of the box end opening, the openings in the hinges of the inner lid, and through the longitudinal passage in the sleeve. The invention relates to car journal boxes, and in particular to the means for closing the opening at the end thereof through which oil and waste are introduced to and withdrawn from the interior of the box, the object being the provision of a double cover or two lids which shall effectively prevent the admission of dust and dirt to the journal and its bearings.
The invention consists in certain novelties of constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate an example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode we have so far devised for the practical application of the principle.
Figure 1 is an end view of a journal box in elevation showing the lids closed and part of the outer lid broken away to disclose the spring and part of the inner lid. Fig. 2 is a section on line accc of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the relative position of one of the slots in the side flanges of the outer lid to the bolt when the lid is closed. Fig. 4 shows the position of the slot relative to the bolt when the outer lid is partly open. Fig. 5 shows one of the hinges of the inner lid. Fig. 6 illustrates the curved top edge of the lid; 14, a recess in the shown in Fig. 4, the cam lugs 15 travel up the surfaces 4 upon the cam lugs 3, over the curved surfaces 6, and against the pressure of the spring 25 which causes an outward movement of the outer lid so the relative positions of the slots 12 to the bolt 30 are as shown in the said Fig. 4. As the outer lid is further rotated about the bolt 30, the top curved edge of the lid engages the lugs 20 upon the hinges of the inner lid and forces it from its seat. When the cam lugs 15 have traveled over the surfaces 6 and bear against the straight plain surfaces 5 upon the lugs 3 the outer and inner lids are held in open positions as is obvious.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it is clear We have produced a journal box having two lids which effectively exclude dust and dirt and thereby attains the object set forth as the end of our invention.
What we claim is:
1. The combination with a journal box having an opening at the end and cam lugs adjacent the edge of the opening, of an outer lid provided with lugs upon its inner surface to engage the cam lugs of the box; an inner lid provided with a lever mechanism; means for pivoting the two lids; and a spring secured to the outer lid and adapted to operate the lever mechanism of the inner lid and also force both lids to their seats.
2. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated lugs at the edge of the opening, of an outer lid having flanges with slots therethrough, and lugs upon its inner surface; a bolt passed through the lugs of the box and the slots of the outer lid; an inner lid; and a spring in connection with both the lids for holding the same to their seats.
3. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated cam lugs adjacent the opening, of an outer lid having side flanges with slots, lugs upon its inner surface, and trunnions upon its inner surface; an inner lid with hinges each provided at one end with an opening and a recess therein; a perforated sleeve with three lugs; a bolt; and a spring having coils located upon the aforesaid trunnions and its loop end engaging one of the lugs upon the sleeve.
4. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated lugs at the edge of the opening, of an outer lid having flanges with slots therethrough, and a recess within the body thereof; a spring secured within the recess of the lid; a bolt passed through the lugs of the box and the slots in the flanges of the lid; an inner lid; and means in connection with the inner lid adapted to be engaged by the spring.
5. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated cam lugs, of an outer lid having flanges with slots, cam
lugs, and a recess within the body thereof; a spring secured within the recess of the lid; a bolt passed through the cam lugs of the box and the slots in the flanges of the lid; an inner lid; and means in connection with the inner lid adapted to be engaged by the spring.
6. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated cam lugs, of an outer lid with perforated flanges, a recess, and cam lugs; a spring secured within the recess of the lid; a bolt; an inner lid; and means in connection with the bolt adapted to be engaged by the spring.
7. The combination with a journal box having an opening, of two lids; means for pivoting the lids at the edge of the opening; a U-shaped spring secured to the inner surface of the outer lid; and means in connection with the inner S. The combination with a journal box having an opening, of an outer lid and, an inner lid; means for pivoting the lids to the edge of the opening; a U-shaped spring having coils near its ends located upon trunnions which are at the inner surface of the outer lid, and a loop end; and means in connection with the inner lid adapted to be engaged by the said loop end of the spring.
9. The combination with a journal box having an opening, of an outer lid with a curved top edge; an inner lid with hinges having lugs adapted to be engaged by the top edge of the outer lid when opened; and a bolt for pivoting the lids to the box.
10. The combination with a journal box having an opening, of outer and inner lids; and means for hinging the lids to the edge of the opening; the top edge of the outer lid being adapted to engage and open said inner lid when the outer lid is swung upon its hinge.
11. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated lugs, of an outer lid with a recess in the body thereof, and fixed cam lugs; a spring within said recess for forcing the outer lid to its seat; an inner lid; and means for pivoting the outer lid to the lugs upon the box.
12. The combination with a journal box hr. ving an opening, of an outer lid; an inner lid; means for pivoting the lids to the edge of the opening; and a spring in positive engagement with both lids which forces them to their seats.
13. The combination with a journal box having an opening and perforated lugs, of an outer lid with flanges provided with slots; an inner lid; a bolt for pivoting the outer lid to the box lugs; and a spring in connection with both lids which forces them to their seats; cam mechanism being provided between the outer lid and the box lugs.
14. The combination with a journal box having an opening, of two lids; means for lid to engage the spring.
