Description
No. 663,706. Patented Dec. II, I900.
J. W. STEPHENSON.
AXLE BOX 'LID. (Application filed m 26, 1900.
(No Model.)
I Ill/l1 INVENTOR :3
QAN Wm mw UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
JOHN W. STEPHENSON, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL MALLEABLE OASTINGS COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AXLE-BOX LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,706, dated December 11, 1900.
Application filed July 26, 1900. Serial No. 24,876. (No model.)
To ail whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. STEPHENSON, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axle-Box Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows in side elevation an axle-box lid constructed in accordance with my invention, the pin being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line II II of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4 are like views showing modifications.
In the drawings, 2 represents the car-axle box.
3 is the swinging lid, which may have a flange 4 at its margin.
5 is the pivot-lug at the top of the box, and 6 is the pivot-pin, which passes through the lug and through ears 7, formed on the lid.
Sis the spring, fitting at one end in a socket 9 on the lid and at the other end bearing on the lug 5. The holes 7 in the ears 7 of the lid are elongated, so as to constitute an elongated or slotted guideway, which when the lid is closed is at an acute angle to the plane of the face of the box and is preferably nearly vertical. This slotted guideway permits the lid in closing to move in a longitudinal direction and at the same time to move laterally somewhat toward the face of the box, thus insuring an accurate fitting and adjustment of the lid to the face, which is the object of my invention. The importance of this in exeluding dirt and dust from the axle will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I show a construction in which the slotted guideway is formed in the lug 5, being at an acute angle to the face of the box and preferably nearly vertical, as above explained.
In the drawings I show the pivot-pin 6 straight and of uniform diameter throughout. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to any special form of pin, but that the same may be varied.
I claim- A journal-box having a swinging lid, a spring arranged to close the lid, a pivot, and a slotted guideway having its guiding portion extending at an acute angle to the plane of the face of the box and arranged to guide the lid in a longitudinal direction and. also laterally toward the face of the box; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN W. STEPHENSON.
