ALBERT O. BUOKIUS, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL MALLEABLE OASTINGS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
JOURNAL-BOX LID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1909.
Application filed December 2, 1907. Serial No. 404,822.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. BUOKIUS, J in, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Journal-Box Lid, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which F igure 1 is a front elevation of a journal box embodying my invention with the open position of the lid shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a side View of a portion of the journal box.
My invention has relation to the class of journal boxes and is designed to provide a journal box whose lid or cover will open edgewise in the plane of the lid and having an improved arrangement of the springs for holding the lid in its closed position.
In the accompanying drawing in which I have shown the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 2 designates the journal box and 3 the lid or cover. This lid or cover is provided with the parallel lugs 4 on its outer side. These lugs extend beyond the rear edge of the lid or cover and carry a pivot pin 5.
6 is a yoke having upwardly extending arms which fit between the pivot carrying portions of the lugs 4 and through which the pivot pin 5 also loosely passes. Extending through the central portion of this yoke is a pivot pin 7 which also extends loosely through a lug or projection 8 on the side of the box. This pin 7 has a head 9 at its lower end and seated between this head and the inner wall of a recesson the under side of the lug or projection'S is a compression spring 10. j
11 is a spring which is preferably formed from a single piece of wire whose end portions arecoiled around the pin 5 between the arms of the yoke 6, the free ends of the wire being engaged with the arms of said yoke as shown at 12, and the central portion of the wire being formed into a forwardly extending loop 13 whose free end portion has a bearing in the recessed lug 14 on the outer face of the lid. The spring 10 acts to draw the lid or cover tightly against its seat on the box, in which action it is assisted by the spring 11.
To open the lid, the operator grasps the hand projection 15 at the front edge of the lid and pulls the lid outwardly, thus causing it to turn upon the axis of the pivot 5 and to draw away from its seat on the box. Having thus drawn the lid outwardly from its seat on the box, the operator lifts it edge wise, turning it on the axis of the pin or bolt 7, moving it into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. During this edgewise motion of the lid, the yoke 6 rotates, but does not tip as it is drawn closely to its seat by the spring 10. Any suitable arrangement of stops may be provided for limiting the opening and closing movement of the lid. Thus 16 designates a stop lug or projection yviich limits the opening movement of the Within the scope of my invention, the parts may be modified in various ways. Thus the precise form and arrangement of the springs may be Varied, as may also the construction and arrangement of the yoke 6.
What I claim is 1. In a journal box, an edgewise movable lid, a yoke to which the lid is pivotally connected, said yoke being also pivoted to turn in the direction of edgewise movement of the lid, a spring pressing inwardly against the outer face of the lid, and a second spring acting on the yoke in a direction to draw the yoke against the box; substantially as described.
2. In a journal box, an edgewise movable lid, a yoke pivoted to turn in the direction of the edgewise movement of the lid, a pivot pin passing'through the arms of said yoke and through lugs or projections on the lid, a spring coiled about the pivot pin and having a portion bearing against the lid, and a second spring acting on the pivot of the yoke; substantially as-described.
3. In a journal box, an edgewise movable lid, a yoke to which said l-id is pivoted, a pivot bolt passing through the yoke and a bearing on the box and arranged to permit movement of the yoke in the direction of the edgewise movement of the lid and a compression spring seated on said pivot bolt and acting to draw the yoke to its seat upon the box; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
